So glad I left nursing, $2,300 bi-weekly was not enough for the amount of work we did and the liability we carried. I went back to school for IT 2 years into my nursing career, i now work for Epic as a contractor at the same hospital i was an RN, my base salary new out of school $120k a year, no weekends, no holidays, no nights with 10% annual bonuses and 5% holiday bonuses annually on top. I can work from home when I want to, I can leave by 3pm everyday and arrive by 8am. Computer Science is where it's at

Love this video and your transparency. I remember when I made around $37/hr working nights in NYC at my first job as a new grad. My wife and I learned quickly that if we would move to California we could make double that. I'm now making $96/hr and she's making $118/hr. We're never working in another state again.

Nursing is my 2nd career. It has always been rough. If you have been at the bedside 20+ years that speaks to your perseverance. Nursing has many avenues, many opportunities. Bedside is only one aspect. Nursing is also a part of a broken system that is healthcare. I would never discourage anyone from following their dreams. Step into this field with your eyes wide open. Advocate for yourself as you would for your patient. Take care of yourself physically and mentally. Understand, that all money isn't good money. Decide when the sacrifice is worth it. Stand up for the rights of nurses. Covid magnified issues that were already there. This is not an easy field to be in, but I wouldn't change my choice of being a nurse. I love what I do. I'm so motivated. Of course I am not only doing Nursing for the money, but because I am BIG on being a people's person and I love the medical field! HOWEVER, I am looking forward to the pay being that I've grown up in poverty! I'm so proud of us all!

As a new grad you make good money! I have been working for little more than a year as a CNA at a local hospital. Our nurses start out at $29/hour in midwest.... after 2 years a nurse friend was just raised to $31/hour. The COVID pay (that came to an end) at my hospital (for RN nurses only was $100/hour bonus plus weekend plus night shift differential). Now the money was great for nurses! My friend showed me her bi-weekly check she's getting $6k after taxes bi-weekly with some bonus shifts/hours. Now... the reality of CNA/Nurses (at MedSurge floor) - You get patients who are at the hospital (because they have not pooped for 4 days). I had an obese woman who was given laxatives and instead of calling us after she went 1 time to bedpan, then she started just pooping into bed! When I walked into her room and asked her why she didn't call? She replied "oops I forgot". The patient could not or would not even turn to her side. The male nurse helped me to clean up twice the patient for the 3rd time she pooped in an hour, the male nurse was not to be found and I had to deal with the patient myself. She just enjoyed pooping into bed because she knew it would be taken care of. - You have "bed rest" patients that PT - Physical Therapy love to get those patients to sit on chairs/bed side commode and leave them there for CNA's and RN's to get the patient back into bed! There were multiple times when the patient was not getting up even with two helpers and 4 people had to be asked to help to move the patient from chair to the bed - Many patients "slide down in bed" - even if it's not your patient, you are asked to "boost the patient up in bed" - remember it's YOUR back! If you pull your back and live alone and work as a CNA for lousy minimum wage - sucks to be you! - A good number of patients think they are "God's gift and everyone in hospital must dance around them" - They have "the call button syndrome" - they press the button to mute their TV, they press the button to take their dirty cup from their table away, they press the button to unplug an IV from an outlet, they press the button to ask "what day is it today?" - When you are given 8 bedrest patients / 4 being COVID, 2 being Enteric isolation (fountain of smelly poop) - That's my typical work day! - Sometimes a patient can be "confused" can beat up a nurse! Happened on our shift! A charge nurse was beaten by a patient. The charge nurse wanted to press charges, she was told "the patient is confused" The bottom line : They don't pay you these money for nothing! CNA's have it the worst I think but nurses are responsible for the patients. As a CNA a patient yelled at me "I will kill you! etc... So the nursing/CNA career is not appreciated as much and the pay could've been better if you think how much money these hospitals make per patient....

I have been a RN for 20 years. As a new grad I'm sure you are excited and driven by the financial incentives to frequently pick up extra shifts. The down side of this is the mental and physical stress you encounter. The poor staffing, forced overtime and often poor administration can add to job fatigue and burn out. Most nurses will eventually come to the realization that no amount on financial incentives can replace your mental and physical health needs. Bedside nursing has become unbearable in many institutions which is why many nurses are finding positions outside of direct patient care or leaving the profession all together. It's sad to say I would no longer recommend a career in nursing to any of my family or friends.

It makes me so happy to see people talking about this! My generation didn't and would stay in low paying jobs for the security. But in today's world the only way to get a true raise is to change. I'm happy to see so many new nurses entering the field too!!! Thanks for the video and good luck in your career🥰

Keep in mind that these shift differentials typically don't apply to the outpatient setting. Even if you work a weekend or a holiday (free standing urgent care).

Never in my life have i seen any check i’ve made over 19 an hour. Getting paid enough is based on your perspective. If you want to be of good use to your community and get paid well while doing it… NURSING IS THE WAY TO GO. I can’t wait till i graduate!!!

Nursing is tough, those 12 hour shifts are exhausting. Pick up what you can, but don’t exhaust yourself. REST and enjoy a balanced life. However…the extra shift does help especially if you have a financial goal you want to reach such as a new car, savings goal, house, vacation, etc. Perhaps set up a goal and put the extra money from the bonuses and overtime towards that goal. I work like crazy during my semesters in between nursing school and it’s exhausting. I try to get as much rest as possible, and enjoy my life, but I am also motivated to save as much as I can during that time because it creates a “buffer” for me when I cut my hours back down one school resumes. Prior to nursing school, I worked overtime when I was saving for goals like my down payment for my house and new car. All in all, do whatever is best for you. Thanks for your informative video as well as being an awesome nurse for your patients.

The more you make, the more they take. You can ask payroll to put your bonus on a separate check. Some facilities will do this, so the tax hit isn't as heavy.

nice informative video about new grad pay! although not all states are the same new grad pay, it is great to see the openness about the topic. on a side note of the differential pay, nights on weekends though >__< haha.

$3,173 gross per check is the number you care about here. Times 26 checks bi-weekly equals $82,498 annually in Arizona. Everything else like overtime, bonus, incentives is variable and not guaranteed.

Treat your CNA’s nicely and they will treat you back nicely. Worked as a CNA for 2 1/2 years. Got sick and tired of working in a SNF facility due to disrespect, understaffing, and my job pressuring me to work 16+ hr and if we picked up extra shifts we would also get an extra 50$. I was in LVN school and working at the same time. Couldn’t take it and had a big mental breakdown and left LVN school. 5 months ago I switched my career to medical billing and coding. I am so happy with my switch.

Just make sure that you take care of yourself mentally and physically because at times working too many hours will hurt you in the long run. Just becareful because there’s nothing only one you!!!!

$36.50 is base pay here for new grads! Shift differentials for night, evening, day and weekends!

I’d do the same, have the highest or close to the highest amount of taxes at ken out to ensure you don’t owe in the end. Once you get a grasp on your income and taxes then make adjustments to receive more take home pay.

Time and a half after 40 hours is law in any job though .... shift diff is customary in any healthcare position for weekends / nights / etc. the only difference here are the incentives given due to covid which none of this has to do with being a new grad RN, it's just timing of what is occurring. Please take the time to heed others advice and don't do too much too fast - you will burn out.

I left nursing and work as insurance adjuster now and it’s about a 70k a year job but far easier and didn’t even need a degree… and I’m in west texas where that salary goes a lot further than other cities. My job is salaried and usually finish my work sooner than end of day. But I will admit when I switched was pre Covid when nurses we’re definitely underpaid far worst. Pay scales have really gone up post Covid

The hospitals put the nurses in unsafe situations, and if you make a mistake, you get prosecuted. Way to go!

Another thing to keep in mind is that those "incentives/bonuses" are taxed at a different rate than regular pay, I think it's 40%, might be wrong so $900 might be more like $540. So one check was 40 hrs and the other had an extra shift and bonus?

Instead of paying the most in taxes. I recommend you look at what tax brackets you fall into, depending on income and/or dependents you may have, get that percentage taxed from you pay checks. Yes you may not get a huge refund at the end of the year, but as long as you did it correctly and wont owe them. Then with the extra money that would have gone to taxes just invest it in your retirement.

I’ve been a nurse for 12 years, have my CCRN, CSC, TNCC, ECMO trained, Total artificial heart specialized, IABP, CRRT, LVAD,HVAD, and impella trained and I made 39.17. Just took a remote triage nursing job and went down to 37 and hour lol
