How Much Do Vets Make (are we all rich?)

It is a common perception that veterinarians earn a fortune and that they are able to fund really extravagant lifestyles. But just how much do vets make? How does this relate to the amount of debt that they graduate vet school with? And how does a veterinarian's salary compare to other professions?
The other factor to consider with salary is that being a veterinarian means spending a long time at vet school and burdening yourself with a huge amount of debt. In the US this level of debt on graduation can even make it well over $200,000. It's not much different in the UK with veterinarian student debt expected to climb to £82,000 in the near future.

That's really surprising. I had always imagined vets made 2 to 3 times more than the figures mentioned in this video. It's hard to fathom with all that debt how they can even manage to get by and keep the lights on at their practices.

Thanks for your thoughts! I think so many people have exactly the same perception as you and, given that veterinary care can be very expensive, feel a great deal of resentment towards veterinarians as a result.

That's right. The debt comes from student loans needed to pay tuition and living costs. The nature of the course also means that getting any kind of job while studying is really tough

I think here in Australia we're extremely fortunate! At my vet school, the entire tuition fee is about $320k+, but the government pays a hugeeeeee amount for us that we never have to pay back. So I will only be paying around 60k. Thank you Australia. I could never even begin to imagine the stress of having to pay hundreds of thousands worth of student debt... absolute insanity.

Thank you, this video was very helpful. l’m hoping to be a farm or zoo vet in the future but l was wondering if the income for a farm or zoo vet is significantly higher that the income for pet vets? As this is what the majority of websites say. (l live in the uk)

My wife is a farm vet and the last time we were in the UK her salary was a little higher but in general I'd say they are fairly comparable. I'm not sure about Zoo vets

There are different requirements depending on where you qualify but in most cases you will need to do more exams to practice in the US or Canada

when the time comes i wanted to do uni in the US but i dont think i’d be able to stay in the US and be a vet there, im not sure how much my country pays vets because its not a common profession and theres not many clinics. i feel like the salary could make or break if i commit to being a vet when im older because the US is so expensive

Our Pets Health The same? I’m pretty sure veterinary surgeons that specialize make more than general practitioner veterinarians. They are two different types of vets. One has years of more training. At least that applies to the US, I’m not sure about everywhere else.

@@Ray13201 yup it's pretty much the same, the differences here are the treatment cost for the customers ( of course doing surgeon on a pet will cost more than using drug) and which type of animals you learn in surgeons ( in my country like 90% of vet student learn cat and dog and everyone know to do surgery well on them , but a small percent learn like cow, pig, horse,.v.v. will earn a lot more ).

No, an Indian vet degree does not allow you to practice in many (any?) Western countries without taking further exams. You would have to look at each countries governing body for more details
