As everyone may have different views, for me, driving home for 45 mins in traffic, with some of the nastiest drivers on the planet after 10 hours working in Healthcare during a pandemic, and being able to relax simply by turning up the volume and listening to good music through a good system is PRICELESS! I arrive home somewhat sane enough to do it all over again the next day.

As always Peter 💯💯, spot on!! Sadly most car audio shops are just selling you a brand and quick installation & onto the next. Yes to buying reputable equipment to achieve our individual sq goals. We all hear things differently but we can all appreciate a clean sounding system. I,m only doing a simple build with your inspiration and ideas from your videos & yes it all costs even the tools to bring together my build. What people forget it not only your time, it your knowledge of many years of building systems and you can't put a price on that. Keep building Peter & keep sharing some not all your knowledge 🤫🤫.

I installed my own system in a 2018 Ford f150 supercrew. 11k in total from hardware, materials and tools. Still haven't finished a final install as I'm waiting for some aluminum work to get the amps/dsp on a solid mounting rack. Many hours of deadening, making rcas, making wire runs and soldering connections, chasing down rattles etc. And thats before tuning and measurements etc. If I could afford a high quality installer I'd have gone that route but it is what it is. I may bring the truck to a shop for tuning once I am happy with my install.

@@todisboss23 There are several good build logs with photos in Silverados on the DIY Mobile Audio Forums (DIYMA) and Car Audio Junkies Forums. Just Google Search "DIYMA Silverado build log". You can look for Sierra, F-150, Dodge RAM, and other similar trucks to get more ideas. In my experience, it is fairly easy to achieve really great sound in the Silverado. In trucks, always put your subwoofer(s) on the Passenger side...regular cab or dual cab doesn't matter. When you place your subwoofer(s) on the driver's side, it creates a big null or cancellation in the bass when you listen from the driver's seat. ;) Nick Wingate Jr, an IASCA SQ competitor & judge, and a rep for ORCA USA (Focal, Illusion Audio, Raven, Mosconi/Gladen distributor) has a really great system in his Silverado...Raven subwoofers, Focal Flax 6.5" midbass in OEM door locations, and Illusion Audio C3CX 3'' coaxials in top dash locations, with Gladen Aerospace DSP. Has won several 1st place trophies (not that that is the "end all/be all" indication of top quality sound).

Taking it to a shop denies the owner of the privilege and the pride of doing it themselves. When it’s done, after all the nights, and weekends, and problem solving, you can say when someone asks that you did it and take a great deal of pride in that.

As an owner of a SQ car audio/audio company, when answering this question,, you have to sell yourself, your company, and your work, which is essentially wat this video was. I think what you do best is showing your work through YT video. The detail, the explanation, the showcasing, the instructional videos, the components you use, the final install, and the demo session of each build, is enough for me to think that your companies attention to detail is top notch. I would have no concerns bringing my car to you, as I can see your work through your YT videos. The problem I have is when audio shops charge so much, but you have no way on understanding how well of a job they're actually going to do when you choose to have them build you a system. SO many shops have little to no pics, videos, or reviews. They're very basic, but still charge a lot. If these shops took some time out to simply make a YT channel and give it 10-20% the effort that you do, I am positive they would have more business and less bad reviews. But too many don't, charge a customer, do a crap install, and the customer is left with a sub-par job at a high cost.

Thank you for the kind words! I learnt that we can’t change everyone and we have to let other shops operate whatever way they want. Disappointed customers will walk away eventually. All we can do is to spread the word and set the bar high, so everyone can learn from it. 🔊🔊

Happy...happy..happy..watch the last video before this one. You will hear Peter's customer say it again and again. Isn't that the point of all this? For the love of music and sound. I think for most of us living in this crazy world today we are looking for a sanctuary..a place where we can escape our daily struggles. For me and I'm sure for many of you who love music, our cars have become that place of solitude where we can escape the daily grind. How can we put a price on that? If the customer has the funds to hire an installer such as Peter and the end result is even better than was expected and the customer is ecstatic about what was achieved in his automobile..then it was worth everything he spent on it. As a d.i.y. guy, out of necessity more than desire, I can tell you even doing it yourself is expensive. Especially if your experimenting turns out to be a total disaster. Then you have to tear It all out and try again. How do you put a price on knowledge and experience? Not even to mention the investment in tools and equipment that the expert has to invest. So when I am in my garage with my stone axe carving out some holes for my subwoofers, I dream about how it would be if I could just hire someone such as Peter with all his knowledge and skill, to help me find that brown note, that place of solitude, that sanctuary! If you can afford that and you drive away happy, then by all means do it! I'm sure the choice to put certain speakers in the front and different in the back was for good reason. Happy..happy..happy. Sorry for ranting on your comment section Peter, I read the comments on the other video as you mentioned..I dont know why I got so passionate about it. As always, I enjoy your videos and the expertise you share on KZfaq...and all this for free! Peace

Thank you Peter! The rule of thumb I read when I first got into audio was to budget $1 for install for every $1 spent on equipment. Based on your own anecdote with the Honda, the ratio is higher than this, more than 2:1 install vs equipment. This is excellent information to keep in mind. 👍

I was installing 5k-10k in the 80’s! I competed in under 100 watt class, probably 15k back then! We did very little more than maybe a fiberglass custom sub enclosure. Today that would easily be 25k to even 50k! We could also replace a factory radio and you would have $250, and it was blah!

Great video Peter. For people's information for example a budget of 3k for equipment. Simple but SQ system, 3 way. Then have the car owner do all the build, wire runs, sub install. Then at $50.00 per hour. Now add up the days spent and then they can see it's not cheap. On another note appreciate sharing the current awesome sub build for the Honda. 👏 Amazing.

The only way I'll save on the build is because I did the complete sound deadening and trying to get hiend equipment new at a good price , I can do some of the easy wiring , using ferrels and doing te h flex on the cables, but some things have to be done by the professionals, just the two mmatts6150 cost me $2200, plus the mmatts md4100 for the bass shakers is another $300, agm battery $300, the zapco hdsp v $1800, plus another $ 200 for bluetooth module, all the speakers, tweeters, widebands ,subwoofer, all from cdtaudio, $ 2000, their top of the line ,es and hd line, plus headunit pioneer avh 501 ex $ 350, and other things like cable, rca's, battery isolator, but it's all worth it, plus bass shakers, the buttkicker are expensive, about 270 each, unless you get the aurasound for $50, but theres a big difference, it's a very expensive hobby, but if your an audiophile it does not matter, you just have to have a budget, mine is $10,000 or less.

Reality is, any well done audio is NOT cheap...but it also will vary from vehicle to vehicle. Anything custom is going to be time inclusive and expensive if it is to be right. It all comes down to your installer as well.....i would gladly pay a known installer more for the quality that they are known for. People want great sound cheap and it just doesn't work that way......you have to be willing to pay for the knowledge behind the build.

Guy 1 says “I want a fast car that corners like a race and stops on a dime”. Guy 2 says” yeah that would be cool”. Mechanic says” how fast do you want to go”? Guy 1 says “really fast, but it has to handle really good, and stop on a dime”. Mechanic says “ well it’s very simple, how fast your car is directly proportionate to the size of your check book”. So how fast did you say you want to go? Engine 12k and up Trans 3k Suspension 7k and up EFI and associated parts 3k and up Wheels 500 and up Brakes 2k and up Induction system, turbo or supercharger 7k and up Tuning priceless, cause if it ain’t tuned right that motor will not live long. So really it’s all about how much you are willing to spend, and what you expect as an end result. So yeah, a person can spend a lot of money, or maybe try doing something’s themselves, maybe not buy the best of everything, maybe buy second hand, but definitely have reasonable expectations about what is there.

As I say in work, you didn't have time or money to do it right the first time but you somehow had the money and time to do it right the second and third time. it's a joke. The money and time needed to do it right costs money but as usual, no one wants to pay for the TIME and KNOWLEDGE it takes to do it. They think flat price for the kit alone is what it should cost without any install or tuning time. it's just the ignorance of the general public when it comes to pricing work in the correct way. Thankfully when dealing with b2b they know the score and dont question when they get quoted hundreds of pounds PER HOUR for work, they know why. Unfortunately the vast majority of the general public just don't understand overheads and operating costs.

I hate being that guy to shed out Red Pills here. But some people just don't have the taste palette for Audio or even sound much beyond understating basic speech. It's like convincing a person to buy Pizza by the slice for $5.00 when you get get a whole Pizza at 7-Eleven for for a fiver and maybe a free 2 liter of Soda. The reason why so few are interested in truly high end audio reproduction in cars and S.Q.is simply down to taste. Most people are not able to understand much beyond the reason why plastic wood dash is not better then wood dash with imperfections etc. They just can't seem to understand why the patina of an item adds so much warmth or character to an object etc. People who worry about money do so since they are to lazy to care about learning about what they are trying to achieve and just want the simple grocery store approach or Fast food of audio in general. And that's just how it is. And that fine. What pains me is that others want to always "FIX" our hobby. Its almost exclusively a male hobby as well. And that seems to rub people the wrong way. Oh well. As in all things in life, not everyone has been gifted with the soul to enjoy such pleasures. It's like those that enjoy Caviar. You won't catch me at IKEA enjoying any of it. I don't care if its $3.00 or $300. Not going in my mouth. :-) So when folks start balking about the costs of our hobby, time or gear ? Sometimes it's just best to nod and look away. They just don't get it and might never. To those of us that LOVE audio? We get it. We love your work. And we love those that enjoy the finer things in life.

Those are all good brands depending on which models you choose from their lineup. In terms of DSP, I would also not overlook the miniDSP C-DSP 8x12 v2 with Dirac Live. The Dirac Live is a game changer IMO! I tend to mix and match the best drivers (speakers) from different brands based on their performance and intended use (frequency range or "passband"). For instance, in one of my installs I have Gladen Aerospace 20 tweeters, Focal Utopia 3.5WM midrange, GR-Research M165X 7" midbass, and old school Infinity Beta 15" subwoofers. Many of the Scanspeak Revelator and Illuminator speakers are amazing as well...their entire line from subwoofers to tweeters. Even some of their less expensive "Discovery" drivers are excellent. As Peter can attest to, some of the Audible Physics drivers are excellent. The choices are endless unfortunately! :-P

On the DIYMA Forums, search for the Build Logs for Ben Zimmerman's BMW, and ErinH "2006 Honda Civic LX Neverending Tale". Look up *Apicella Auto Sound* KZfaq channel...Nick did a walkthrough video and interview of Ben's World Champion BMW IB system. Ben has Hybrid Audio Technologies (H.A.T.) 7" X6 drivers IB in his custom dash and 15" Clarus IB trunk subwoofer. ErinH had 10" Scanspeak & then 10" Ciare midbass drivers IB in his kickpanels (he has a new 2019 Civic now with Audiofrog GB60 as midbass in the OEM door locations (see Erin's Audio Corner on KZfaq).

But it's so. Uch nicer to put everything new and good stuff. Good amps like zapco ap mmatts. Both the best in sq. One a/b the other d class are not cheap. Pete shows many options that will help make it less expensive and still sound awesome. Like tweeter and midrange passive and midbass active. Plus rear fill with coaxial or wideband to help balance the front. But it's all up to us what we want. After seen his clean installs and all the other pros. How can we get a shitty job. I saved big money on things I can do myself and let me tell you to do a car 98% sound deadened with a good 80mil to 120 mil. Then closed cell foam and I still havent done the exterior wheel well. Which actually help tremendously to cover the noise from tire rotation. And to help with some of the outside rattle. It took me about two weeks of hard work. Yes here in New York they wanted 4000 and I know they were not gonna do as ma y layers as I did.
@JasonWW2000

I would suggest you learn how sound deadening material works. Just covering everything is wasteful of your money and time. It needs to only go in certain places. Some places may need multiple layers.

@bbfoto7248
@bbfoto7248 3 жыл бұрын
As Peter said...it DEPENDS on the particular vehicle and what OEM speaker locations it has, along with how much room to install DSP and amps, etc. I would say that $5k *might* be the point of diminishing returns for the EQUIPMENT alone. But in terms of the quality of the INSTALLATION (Sound Deadening, Wiring, Custom Speaker Mounts & Subwoofer Enclosures, etc.), you can easily spend $5k if you want REAL QUALITY and an install that doesn't take up all or most of your usable Cargo space! Again, it A LOT DEPENDS on the vehicle. Yes, it's much easier to achieve great sound in a home audio system, especially if you make DIY Speakers and Subwoofers. HOWEVER, not everyone is in a position to have the space or the time to listen (in peace and quiet) while at home. Many live in very small homes with no room for a good system (use good headphones instead), or they can't listen undisturbed when they are at home due to children or other family members activities and schedules. Or they live in an apartment/flat/condominium where they can't turn it up loud or have really great bass. Our vehicles are the one place that we will usually have "private time" when when drive to work, or take a road trip, etc. We can play any type of music we want, and turn it up as loud as we want. :) And hey, we can still sit in our car even while at home and enjoy our music without disturbing anybody. ;)

@Stormy Young Opening your windows might make a difference but it will depend on the interior size or volume of the vehicle's closed cabin. IB means INFINITE Baffle, i.e. the "Enclosure" is infinitely large. Depending on a few particular specs of the speaker or subwoofer, once the "enclosure" reaches or surpasses a particular size or volume, it no longer has any influence on the frequency response if the volume of the airspace continues to increase, i.e. "opening your windows". So, in theory, if your IB setup is done properly in accordance with the subwoofer's specs, there shouldn't be much difference in response when the windows are opened. YMMV

Very good video. There is way too much focus on the products vs. the quality of the install. Not sure why anyone would not rather go with properly installed and tuned mid-segment components than poorly installed and not tuned high cost components? Probably comes down to the fact that people in general are not doing their homework. Too much bias towards an "expectation" that certain brands "sound better".
@bbfoto7248
@bbfoto7248 3 жыл бұрын
@Carl Norrbom It is simply because very few people even realize or understand that "acoustics" is a thing, and that the physics of sound + how our auditory system works is an incredibly important consideration...especially in a small, highly-reflective environment such as a vehicle interior. The general public just thinks that it is Only the Quality or COST of the EQUIPMENT that can possibly make the sound quality better. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.

10 years ago full range class D amps may not have sounded good simply due to low sampling rates. Nowadays the processors are faster and you can get really good sounding full range class d amps. What is your take on active crossover, and subs? I am not a believer that you need these things to make a world class system. I am perfectly happy with passive crossovers and without a sub in my system. The measurements are relatively flat and the use of EQ does wonders for improving bass.

@bbfoto7248

@Barbeque Tech Tips Well, you can get "great sound" (relative term) from a fairly simple passive component system *IF it is installed properly* HOWEVER, quite frankly, if you do not have a Subwoofer, and you have never heard a properly installed and tuned Active System, you simply Do Not Know what you're missing. Without meaning to sound nasty or condescending, you are simply ignorant with regards to what an Active System with a proper DSP and a subwoofer can offer in terms of acoustic performance and soundstaging IN A VEHICLE. There is absolutely NO WAY to achieve top quality audio in a vehicle without having Time Alignment (digital delay), adjustable crossovers, and Independent Left & Right EQ for Each Speaker and subwoofer, PERIOD. Try to get out and listen to one of these Top 10 SQ competition cars and only then you will understand and hear for yourself what you think you have not been missing. Otherwise, you simply cannot understand or comment about it because you have never actually experienced it for yourself. Get out there and HEAR what IS possible.

Hey Peter I would like to know your take on High End Speakers like Warfedale speaker that cost $20k and the likes. It seems that many of these audiophile components are 20-40k a piece. How much is that amp? $20K, How much is this phono player? $20K, how about these Cryo treated Wires? $20k ect. I want good audiophile quality without the ridicules sticker shock. I just wonder how much of the Avant Garde grade components are expensive solely because of the Design and Craftsmanship of the enclosure but not the sound performance. Aren't you a sound engineer? I bet you could build a set of home floor speakers for a fraction. and if you compare what you do vs Audiophile Home equipment, you are a bargain.
