Many patients wonder how much a total knee replacement or total hip replacement costs. How much is the surgeon paid? How costly is the implant?
Health insurance premiums continue to go up. Patients are becoming more aware of some of the hidden costs in the delivery of health care. Many patients overestimate what surgeons get paid or how much implants cost.
We did a study that asked patients how much a surgeon was paid to perform a total knee or hip replacement surgery. Patients overestimated what surgeons were paid.
A 2013 NY Times paper quoted that in the US the cost of a total knee or hip replacement surgery ranged from $30,000 - $112,000.
The AAHKS put out a bulletin quoting that the cost of implants vary from hospital to hospital based on volume but the cost ranged from $3,000 - $10,000.

Just had my left TKR done 3-weeks ago.......had the right done 1-year ago. Both done here in Minnesota through the TCO Excel program......surgery, meds, overnight stay in Suites, all meals, private nurse, free walker, physical therapy and doctor visits covered for 90-days and also several free changes of TCO clothes. All done with one single payment 1-week before surgery..........$25K total for EVERYTHING! BCBS insurance paid $23K and I paid $2K. One single payment covering every single aspect of the surgery. Excellent program and easy for the patient.

I am in Maine and on Medicare. The bill for my total knee replacement done in February 2023 was $56,282. Medicare paid $16,040 and my Medicare Supplement paid $9,469 for a total paid of $25,509 or 45% of the amount billed. My surgery included one night in the hospital under observation (not admitted). My implant was billed at $10,990 (payment was Medicare - $3,446; supplement - $2198; total = $5,644). My surgeon billed $4822. Medicare paid $1,087 and my supplement paid $241 for a total of $1,328. So overall pretty close to your averages.

Useful information. Seems to reinforce my assumption, good or bad, that it is important when looking at a TKA or hip replacement to find a MD with a lot of experience and high volume of surgeries. A practice with a functioning team that works within the constraints of Medicare and insurance coverage.

I am lucky to live where I do. I only had to pay for parking at the hospital during pre op visits and Physio appointments after the surgeries… that cost me $5 per trip, so I had both knees done for about $50. I did buy an ice machine tho, so there was a couple hundred added on.
