The City of Toronto doesn’t allow scooters on public transit so no dice. Either scoot the whole way or don’t I guess could use an Uber XL but that is not saving any money in fact that would be expensive

I'm retired but have been riding motorcycles and motor scooters for over 50 years. Taking into consideration the cost of inflation moving forward and climate change I recently decided to "get into" electric scooter riding. I was amazed at what you can get for under $1K. Long story short, I believe it's feasible to get along with 2 wheels only and ditch the 4 wheeler but you've got to have the "mindset", cooperation of others (depending on circumstances), and a plan to do it. It's a very personal decision and you may not have shared enthusiasm by other family members . . . and then again you just may. The annual cost of car insurance alone can easily exceed the cost of an electric scooter. Having a motorcycle or motor scooter in addition to an electric scooter is a huge plus. Note that to support the day to day needs a $6K motorcycle or motor scooter can get the job done without having to spend well over $20K for a dream machine. Adding a trailer or sidecar is a plus (if possible). Weather is an issue of course so you have to dress for it. ATGATT for safety is a must. Look, for example, at Europe and Asia and see how human life finds a way to move and groove at minimal expense. At the end of the day some folks will need a 4 wheeler due to obligations, family needs, and practicalities, but it doesn't have to be a large energy consuming (both in manufacture and use) machine . . . it can be a smaller energy efficient vehicle that makes excellent use of space. That said, it can be augmented with a 2 wheeler(s) and only used when needed . . . not desired. This philosophy is a "hard sell" to many but to those who believe life is about the "experiences" and not just "stuff" it is a brilliant concept. Like it or not, now is the time to take serious measures to reduce pollution, waste, and reckless use of this planet and fend off injurious climate change. What goes around comes around. We breathe what we burn. Progress is not achieved by repetition. Progress is achieved by stepping out in constructive new directions time after time . . . one day at a time.

Absolutely! Also, your four-wheeler (if you have to have one) doesn't need to be a humongous gas-guzzler. An EV (even used one) might do the job for a fraction of the cost.

Great video! My wife and I had a similar experience that has changed our lives. When gas prices went crazy during COVID we both bought electric performance scooters, and tried to use them whenever we could. We didn't expect it, but it totally changed the way we think of transportation, and it saved us a TON of money as you have explained. Aside from that it's just super fun to ride, and I find myself making excuses to go for a joy ride. We will always own a single gas powered vehicle, but we will never again own a second vehicle, so that extra cost is gone. I'll just get an Uber on bad weather days if we both need the car at that time. One other benefit not explicitly mentioned in the video is not just the ease of finding a parking spot, but the ability to park right next to the door in most cases. Just lock it up at at the bike rack, and walk right in. No travelling across a huge parking lot, or wandering around the lot trying to find a space. It's awesome! You can even use a scooter for small shopping trips, and a quick life hack tip is to plop a hand basket on your scooter as you enter the door. This transforms your scooter into a shopping cart, and means that store managers aren't likely to bother you since you obviously can't ride it indoors, and it provides extra security against theft since it never leaves your possession.

Just a few things to consider for people that want to use it a lot for trips to get groceries. Consider a compact one that has a high enough weight capacity combined with your weight. Picking a high water resistance rating is good too, can climb hills well if you live around hilly areas, and picking a scooter from a brand that is well known and has good customer service helps. If you can also find a close enough repair shop then it’s better, otherwise be prepared to repair or replace parts if need be. Have spare tires for both wheels, and maybe even being turned away at the door with certain stores if it’s too big or they just don’t want you carrying it around with you inside. Also, ask your manufacturer what lock type they recommend for your scooter, usually a U Lock or Chain lock will do, and the brand kryptonite sells good quality ones (just don’t leave it locked for long, try keeping it with you often because scooters aren’t cheap). Maybe even consider an electric unicycle, because they can be even smaller to carry around in something like a backpack.

One thing I would like to see from scooter manufacturers going forward is for them to be working towards increasing the IP rating. Scooters are a blast to ride, but we are exposed to the elements, and I don't want bad weather to necessarily always be a hinderance to my scootering if I have to ride. I'm lazy and don't really want to have to waterproof my scooter myself so this is one aspect I would like the manufacturers to work on improving in the future.

Late to the party, but an interesting video nonetheless. I've thought about the cost savings of e-scooting vs driving, but there was always one category of cost that always plagued my brain: reparability and long term viability. e-scooter's are great cost wise when things are properly working, but when they aren't, they end up to be expensive paperweights (you could say the same about cars too). If lack of parts or expertise in repairing/maintaining e-scooters is present, the cost of e-scooting shoots up drastically since you'll most likely have to buy another e-scooter. I guess the best way I sum it up is if you spend the same $ on a car on e-scooters (just for them stock), whether or not the cost of ownership + usage would still be better. For me I already have a hand me down car that was given to me, and I've already spent $3k on all my escooters thus far. Sometimes I wonder if it would have been better to have spent that on fuel instead considering I haven't made my return yet buying my scooters.

-I also count my time as cost savings. My commute is bus (3.5 mi) to train to bus (1.5 mi). If I replace the bus with my scooter, I not only save $2.50 in fares, but my commute is 30-40 minutes shorter each way. It makes a difference when you can lessen your commute to 1h 10m from 1h 40m or 1h 50m. -That hour a day at a decent pay rate will pay off my $650 scooter in less than a month and then you throw on another $100 a month from fare savings. I mean I consider it a bargain that I could pay for the scooter in 6+ months from fare savings alone! -I love my scooter so much, I am upgrading to an Evolv Terra after just 3-4 months of riding my more budget scooter. Hello Paul: Thank you for your video. A friend of mine had a Scooter for about USD 1200,- and the motor had to be replaced after only 500 miles. A big waste of resources and energies! Compared to this a regular bicycle lasts almost forever. Scooters are actually a great idea, but if they don't last for long, it's bad. Another disadvantage is that battery packs cannot be taken off from most of the Scooter models. With and E-Bike one can gave several batteries. Which Scooters in your opinion are built to last? If of only the ones from Dualtron for USD 7'000,-, 8'000,- and so on are really good, it's again no good.
@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide
@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonas, Dualtron’s reputation is no longer deserved. They make nice scooters, but have little to no advantage in terms of reliability. Hopefully your friend’s motor was covered under warranty. For scooters which are ridden a lot, any manufacturing defect should fail during the warranty period, and then it should be relatively smooth sailing until wear starts to become a factor. My guess is that the most reliable scooters will be ones made by companies who have produced sharing scooters like Okai and Segway Ninebot. But Kaabo, Apollo, Voro etc are catching up quickly. More and more scooters have swappable batteries to extend range. I’m getting ready to review a relatively low cost scooter with really nice battery swapping hardware. -Paul
@cameranmanner4701
@cameranmanner4701 2 жыл бұрын
Cars also need maintenance as well. Also when buying a new car some need to be returned to the dealer for warranty repairs, no different then a scooter. Only issue with scooters there are far and few when it comes to service centers. Part replacements are another problem. As for the battery i totally agree that every manufacturer that make these small scooter should have a swappable battery, not just for the convenience of charging but for theft. The desire to steal a scooter is less when one of the most expensive part is missing. But for those scooters like wolf king, those are massive batteries. I think most would not appreciate pulling out the battery and carrying them. But a swappable battery makes it supper convenient when replacing or having an extra on hand to extend ride times.

Unless you could get rid of your car (where you live close to everywhere you need to go), otherwise the savings is not that much, since you still have to pay for car insurance and maintenance even you you drive less (only slightly less if you need to commute far). Insurance and maintenance costs don't decrease that much even if you drive less. And still it's too risky to get rid of your car in case you need to go somewhere further, which is very likely. Or when you need to carry or buy something that you scooter won't fit, which is very common as well.

We’re looking to get her a upgrade but the only issue is that she can’t really carry the weight of the horizon after trying for a couple times. Is there any suggestions? Anything under 1000 will do, we’re currently looking at uscooter and Apollo air pro, but wonder whether you guys have other suggestions

eScooters are great (they're NOT toys) but I still have a niggling question - considering there's going to be a very significant amount of electricity required (recharging) - not as much as if there were electric cars/buses only - what's gonna be the source? Fossel fuels? Nuclear? Solar? Wind? Seems to me we're addressing one set of planetary problems & replacing them with others......

Even if we ran the generators on gasoline to make electricity for scooters, we’d burn about 1/40th as much fuel for the same miles. No matter how you slice it, scooters are a huge net win for energy consumption. -Paul

eScooter's battery size is about 1/200 the size of a low-end Tesla, and so to fully charge a 2.4mAh battery like what you would see on an extremely large scooter like the vsett 10+ would cost about 30 cents. However, the new generation of electric cars all start out over 6000 pounds with almost 2600 pounds of that being battery. So the vast majority of questionable energy decisions will be decided by automobiles and not eScooters. eCars barely outsell all other electric vehicles in the US while using about 200 times more battery, and eCars get substantial government subsides while eScooters and eBikes are heavily taxed; hence it seems clear the US has decided NOT to back eScooters and eBikes. Finally, to address the source of energy; we can use coal/natural gas/oil and be as dirty as you want, or wind/solar/nuclear and be as clean as you want, but it makes little difference either way as the infrastructure cost to build roads for heavy vehicles exceeds the carbon output of the transportation sector.

It is inherently better to drive a tiny vehicle than a large one. Plus, if it caught on in a significant way, stand still vehicle traffic could be vastly reduced, which just that one change would save TONS of energy. Traffic jams are an enormous waste of resources (time and material). When you look around at all these big suvs with single occupants, recognize the waste going on.

People look at scooters and electric bicycles and think "oh man that's expensive", largely because they aren't doing the long-term math. In the long term, either one is a huge cost savings even if you still own a car. I use an electric bike for almost all of my travel here in Japan, since my farthest trip during the day is about 5km. @@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide it will last many years with the battery degrading over time. A scooter will only last, if you do short distance travel. A motorcycle will kick a scooter's butt on 100,000 km travelled. The scooter battery will need to be replaced many times over, making it more expensive than a motorcycle. An e-scooter is a great mode of transport for city people or people who travel short distances. In Australia a Kaebo King Gt cost $6000 AUD and the battery replacement cost is 50 percent of the initial purchase price. If you want to get 100 000kms out of your GT then the battery replacement cost is going to be awfully expensive.

I calculated a >92% reduction for fuel cost for commuting, switching from my car to my e-scooter. Is it worth my time? Commute back and forth - CAR: Average time = 27*2 = 54 minutes Distance = 17*2 = 34 km Cost = 34 * 0.12 = 4.08 € (average speed = 37.8 km/h = 23.5 mph) Commute back and forth - E-Scooter: Average time = 40 * 2 = 80 minutes Distance = 14*2 = 28 km Cost = 28 * 0.0084 = 0.235 € (average speed = 21 km/h = 13 mph) Time difference = 80 - 54 = 26 minutes = 0.4333 h Cost difference = 3.85 € Hourly savings = 3.85 / 0.4333 = 8.89 € / h Which is a bit higher than my net hourly salary lol

It’s factored in by assuming the scooter only has a 5 year lifespan and also as part of repair cost. The traffic is so bad! I can't speak for everyone, but my work pays either my monthly parking or metro. I charge my scooter at my work. I save money on metro and charging bill. I love it! Hi MANTAeScooters, My impression is that single vs dual isn’t going to be very different except that it gives you the opportunity to gun it more and ride at a slightly higher average speed. For example the Mantis V2 based mode I did recently covered 27 miles. I’ll bet it would be 29 miles ridden at the same average speed in single motor. Some day I’ll do a back to back test. The ultimate way to do it would be identical scooters ridden together and see which one stops first and then do it again with the opposite scooter in single motor. That way every average speed would be exactly the same. -Paul
