Govt and regulators have made the whole process impossibly complicated and expensive. Smacks of nanny state. The current situation results in paying ~2-3% of the CETV to be to told a transfer is unsuitable and you still have to pay the fee. And 1% p.a. On top of fund charges Ongoing will prove a huge drag on returns over time especially when there is a long period of poor stock market performance. The biggest danger to people’s wealth is the financial advice industry and their regulator!

Hi Peter Thank you for your comment. Yes, the non-contingent charging ban has been a double-edged sword. On one hand it definitely has increased the quality of advice and removed incentives for advisers to make recommendations to benefit them and not the client, but it has indeed meant that even if you keep the DB Scheme you have to pay the advice fees, which makes advice for those without liquid assets very hard to provide. In regard to ongoing advice, proper financial planning is incredibly valuable and pays back the charges many times over, but if you aren't receiving "full-fat" ongoing financial planning and paying fees like that, yes, you really will have a drag on your performance, although the drag is actually less during periods of poor performance, ironically. Of course, if you aren't getting much ongoing value add, you can always leave their services.

@@cameronjamespensiontransfer if you add FA fees to platform fees (which seem to be higher than direct self service platforms) we are looking at about 1.5% plus fund charges. On a starting million pound investment pot that is 15k per year or £375,000 in fees over a 25 year relationship simply based on the original investment but in practice far higher if the pot grows higher than the annual fees. Please tell me if I am wrong.
