Well we were told that's what we were doing, actually we paying the generation above us pensions. We thought it was being paid for safe keeping. Equally encouraged to take out private pensions which is now being partly taken off us. 8.5% of a low amount to begin with isn't a great rise.

You might not "think" it, but it is - it's not based on how much tax you paid, just that you had qualifying years.

NI taxes do not go into some magical index linked account earning interest, I wish they did but no it all goes into a general taxation pot that is paid right across the board including paying welfare state including the state pension. You(I assume you get the state pension) get your money paid for by people working paying their taxes. Just the same as I will in about 18 years time. If all working age people decided to down tools and stop working tomorrow you would have no pension. What would you think about that, hmm?

In 2016 the Conservative government changed it from an entitlement and reclassified it as a 'benefit' . Recently through act of Parliament the Govt can view your bank account that your pension is paid into. This is because the State pension is going to be means tested and the govt will need to know if your savings are over the limit.

While it is technically correct that, by and large, people in work pay the pensions of retired people, it really is just a technicality, because, in reality, my personal payments influence the amount I receive, not the amount previous generations receive. It depends on the cost of living. Sure, the red tops claim it's true, but some other (more prestigious) journals calculate it in a way which means that there are 11/12 countries below us in real terms.

Its ridiculous that parents can earn 58,000 and still claim taxes back in child benefit yet those without children have to pay tax at 12,000 and get nothing back. We pay tax twice - once when we earn it and again when we get the pension. This woman says many pensioners are well off and should be taxed but there are a lot of parents who claim child allowance but don't need it.. A few years ago some pensioners were giving back their winter fuel allowance. Never heard of any money grabbing parents doing the same thing.

All pensioners are rich? That's factually incorrect. Also we have the highest employment rate since records began. A massive no. of people that are out of work are out of work because they can't get the healthcare that they need, because the Tories have run down the NHS. If we had a properly functioning healthcare system many more people would be able to work, instead of waiting years in some cases to get the treatment they need.

I completely agree with you! I am a pensioner and I get free prescriptions, free local bus travel , winter fuel allowance as well as an enhanced state pension all of which are paid for by today's working families. I know lot's of wealthy pensioners who drive expensive cars to the golf course most days and go on at least three nice holidays a year. Just imagine if the following wealthy pensioners didn't have to pay any income tax ? : Sir Paul McCartney, Lord Sugar, Sir Tom Jones, Richard Branson and James Dyson etc. etc.

Most people of working age have to pay for children with extra food, clothes and provisions for people who do not earn yet and mortgages etc. It is not an equitable comparison.

I guarantee you that pensioners are getting WAY more out of the pension system than they put in. The VAST majority of people who have retired in the last 20 years won't have paid anywhere remotely close to £600 - £800pm in national insurance over their working contribution years.

You do get paid your pension. Whether you work all your life or not. Those on the dole get National Insurance credits so they get the same state pension as those who work for 40+ years. Not a good way to encourage people to get a job!

State pension is tax exempt or a more accurately there is no mechanism to tax state pension so your personal or work pension is taxed instead

No benefit is 'tax exempt'. If your income is above the tax threshold you will pay tax. That applies to earnings, pensions and benefits. State pension is a benefit, fact. Check the gov.uk website.
