To date, I have spent RM8k in total on repairs of my E39 over a period of just three months, and this excludes tyres and wheels.
Bobby told me that in cash flow terms, my expenditure is no different from someone paying the installment of a new 330e.
To investigate his claims, I walked into a BMW showroom to enquire.

Thanks for all the constructive comments, guys. There is no right or wrong in this subject other than pointing out that the buyer has the responsibility of knowing the limits of his/her afordability levels and buy within that sphere. The purpose of this video is not to steer the viewer in either direction but merely to compare a few facts and let you guys judge what's best for yourselves.

Great videos from you as usual 👍 definitely opened a can of worms and a good point for discussion haha i do understand that you are not trying to skew any results but cant help to think that this isnt a conclusive comparison of cash flow. i.e. are you expecting to spend rm2500 for repairs consistently for the coming 8 years? The difference in cost for road tax and insurance between the two cars. The residual value of both cars after 8years. Maybe a follow up part 2 together with bobby? Haha

Funny. Tell Bobby to switch his bank account with yours and Kon you go ahead and tell Bobby, "Eh Bobby, do you know that actually the amount you spent on the E39 can already buy yourself a 330e". Talk is easy. Empty talk is even easier. A brand new car requires monthly payment, which means, debt, as well selling at a lost. Unlike your E39, which essentially debt free, you can chose to not repair or change new parts too, or even sell it at some lost or at breakeven, but won't as rugi as selling a brand new car. You do you. Have fun bro. Cheers!

@@michelletanleyin857 Thing is, the initial 10k repair is not all there is to it. Those are just the things that happen to be broken when you buy the car. Everything is old on the car, and they will break eventually. I believe Bobby point is that, you need to keep spending money to keep the car running, and this is true especially for luxury cars that aren't build to be reliable.
@oumaniac
@oumaniac 5 жыл бұрын
@@GarryMah85 After 5 years, you will need to pay for the car AND maintenance. For an E39, yes there will be more broken items, but cheap parts (even whole transmissions and engines) are plentiful. The reason to buy new is not the cash flow element - but the worry free aspect. How much you value that is up to the individual. If you know nothing about cars and do not enjoy maintaining cars, the E39 is not for you. Maybe a used Camry?
@njwong1340

Well discussed issue Kon. I dwelved over this myself while shopping for my pickup. Eventually, you stand to lose more over time when you buy a new car - taking in depreciation, and extra 'losses' when trading in the vehicle when getting another one. Buying used just means higher initial cost to purchase n restore the car, but the cost will eventually go lower. But to some people, they see it as 'buying' away their worries from breakdowns and save time from having to go from car lot to car lot. To top it off, some people just want to spend as little as possible and get the best car they can. But respectlah Kon on restoring your E39. Sometimes its quite sad to see these nice cars just sitting in the yard, rotting away.

As a used car owner with 5 cars that have either been sold, passed on or currently still in use, I often get told things like what Bobby said. All of them were bought when they were about 9yrs or older, with mileage starting above 130K KM (I even bet that this was tempered before I came along). My main reason that still stands so far is I do not need to commit a fixed monthly allocation of example RM900, for 5 or more years to use/own the vehicle, which includes initial repairs and running wear and tear maintenance, road tax, and insurance even after averaging out the costs. Most people I know of are scared of used car buying because they do not know what to expect and repair costs, whereas a new car already has almost everything from warranty, payment amount to maintenance laid out for the next few years. Like Kon said, when shopping for a used vehicle, the best preparation is to know the vehicle including its Achilles heel, like the manual Inspira's clutch and pump set, excessive oil burning on early Camrys and Estimas with 2AZ-FE, or premature rear wheel bearing wear on FD1/FD2 Civics. What I personally noticed about those that buy used are mostly grouped into 2 categories, the type that wants that specific vehicle model (e.g. petrol heads) , and the other that has enough cash to minimize or eliminate the need for vehicle hire and purchase.

Bobby aint accountant, yes one may encounter exponential replacement cost for owning 2nd hand car, but usually that's temporary unless the person bought a piece of crap.. a brand new conti would easily depreciate 30% after just 2 darn years, that's 60k down the drain if it costs RM200k.. as i finished ur clip, another thing to suggest is, if a person needs an 8-year loan to own a car, he is better off going for something way cheaper, always build your wealth before your ego...

Agree with you....the rm8k that Kon paid was a one time expense.....and he can pocket the rm2.5k monthly that he would otherwise pay for a new bmw..so with the crazy depreciation for conti cars more so...owning a reasonably well kept use car is definitely cheaper in the long run.

As Kon said previously in one of his videos, every single brand new car will depreciate about 30% of its value on the first year regardless of the brand. I've experienced it with a Perodua. So much for resale value

Kon, tell Bobby that just the insurance cover for 250k alone is already close to RM8k per annum (Same as your total major initial repair) which you can hide in the installment for first year but not the 2nd year onwards. Not to mention you can sell off your car at anytime without forking more money to sell unlike the 330e in the first 2-3 years.

3-month repair bill vs 8-year monthly loan repayment? How is Bobby's logic? Even if you sell the 330e after 3 years, the top up loan amount and the 3 year monthly repayment is definitely way higher than your 3-year e39 repair bills.

Agree with you. New car installment have to pay every month. Used car you can decide not to repair for 1 whole year. Like Kon he has another 2 car to use. Keep your bargain price E39 tip top, who know after 2 years you can dispose it off more than your purchase price. I know one owner bought new BMW & when purchase next new car keep his BMW due to too low resale value.

Kon, I have one Merc W124 260E since 1999 bought used. It was registered in 1991 local C & C model. When I bought it, I also spend something like 8K to change whatever parts that needs to be changed. After that, I just spend the normal maintenance fees for around three years other than once in a while there is some extra topup, eg. battery. Just last year, after driving for closed to 20 years I spend closed to 10K again to change the engine, all the suspension mounting, absorber etc I have been using it without having to worry about paying 8 years or so installment. never regret it. In fact my son who is 23 years old prefer to drive this old man car than the MYVI I bought for him

Great video Kon with the simple comparison. Guys arguing in the comments may be missing a crucial point... whilst Kon delves into comparing the cash one may need to fork out in buying a used E39 (and restoring) vs brand new 3 series, he did point out that the motivations for one to choose one over the other is not solely down to cost, but the type of experience one is after. Key takeaway that he did emphasise is "if you think that because you can afford a rm30k axia, therefore you must be able to afford a rm20k bmw, you are wrong". Owning an older used car comes with higher, unpredictable maintenance and repair costs, which may run up to be equal to the money one an owner of a brand new car pays towards financing. Depreciation, insurance etc are good points brought up in the comments, but yes that's what the comments are for, so chill guys!

The best thing about these older german cars is if they were and are maintained right, they can last a really long time. These newer cars are wow, but there are a lot of new tech in the newer cars, so repairing when the time comes may be more costly. Not to mention the depreciation. But best thing about new BMWs is the 5 year free service. Thats a lot of money saved there but once passed that 5 year period, only god knows haha

I estimated RM 8k every year to maintain a 10 years old E90 325i. Brand new BMW 3 series for first 5 years, depreciation is around RM 120k. So it;'s around 40k vs 120k for old and new car for first 5 years. Off course that's depends how much you willing to spend on the car as brand new have an advantage of new leather smell and upgraded electronics. Ride wise would depends. I still prefer the steering feel of E90 compare to full electric power steering which feel numb. But power wise, I prefer the turbo engine with insane torque although I have to admit 6 inline is smoother when you hit 3500 rpm and above but you seldom go into that range for town driving. Fuel economy wise no contest. Newer engine is more efficient. P/S: I wouldn't get 330e. Prefer not a hybrid car as if you wish to keep the car long term, as dealing with 2 drive system will double the headache when the parts start to worn out.

During terrible years, my saga blm went back to workshop 8 times in a year. With major part replacement. Racked up to 4k in repair costs (almost 10% of its original retail price). However, that's still lesser than my yearly installment of the persona vvt. And i need to pay my persona for 5 years. While my saga blm will last for at least 2 years with minimal repair cost after these major repairs. If you have time (to drive to workshop), a second hand (or your existing fully serviced-loan car) should have lower running cost.

Jadi, sebelum beli kereta, bawa pomen siap-siap periksa keadaan kereta.

You'll still enjoy less depreciation because your starting point is lower and your car is at a point along the curve where it is less steep. There will inevitably be wear and tear - a new set of tyres is almost certain. In BMW's case, however, if you go for something less than 5 yrs old, you'll get to enjoy whatever's left of the free service programme not used by the previous owner.

Great to see a fellow e39 owner in this region. I bought an 18 year old 528i e39 2 years ago with a 138,000km on the mileage clock & I use it for our daily commute. Spent about S$3000 ( i'm based in Jakarta ) in repair in the last 2 years mainly on suspension parts, shock absorbers, springs, control arms & tie rods & aux fan. Other than that it drives great & I do my own maintenance & my fuel consumption is currently at 9.9L/100km. My point is the e39 was built like a Rolls Royce & at 18 years old it drives as good as a new BMW. Bought it at S$9000 ... calculate the depreciation say over 4 years ! Great value for a great drive

I got my 528ia e39 Touring down to 7,5 Liter/100Km on the Highway 🙈. But if you want some fun you get it up to 16 Liters at 220Km/h. 180Km/H only uses around 13-14 Liters, that’s really great.

Yes at the start of owning a decent used car, esp one that is more than 10 years old .... you will definitely spend the sum you stated to pick up the pieces the previous owner left. But from thereon , will your repair bill reach say 50k in 2 years ? Cause the new 200k car will surely depreciate much more than that. Upon disposal of the 200k new car after 5 years of ownership ( when warranty expires) , many middle class wage earners lose up to 2 years of their NETT take home pay upon selling their car .... . Not mentioning the hefty insurance on new car under HP must be comprehensive based on market value ...while your fully paid old car can be 3rd party for a song ...... you do "save" somewhat ... Sure by all means get a new car or even two , if you have excess cash sitting around to enjoy life .. but many Malaysians are generally living in debt as Bank Negara puts it .... Poor financial management and living up to the Jones. Syndrome - You can't drive your bungalow around town but you can surely show off your new car right ?

Lol - calculate all your downpayment, payments over 8 years - and then the residual value of the car. Unless you got a complete trash of a used car, this is really a no brainer. After an initial heavy expense of restoration, you are left with an E39 that is really MUCH better than that 330e. Plus after the warranty period ends, you will have maintenance costs for that 330 as well.
