Күн бұрынMy Indian girlfriend and I went to get a court marriage in India, but we failed! Find out why and also the process of getting a court marriage in India. Then we discuss dowry in India and whether I'm getting dowry or not. Dowry is illegal in India now, but it still happens is known as a "gift" now.
If you're planning to get married in India under the Special Marriages Act then you first must register your intent to marry at edistrict.delh.... That website will then give you a date that you can go to your local Sub-Divisional Magistrate's Office (SDN Office) and get the marriage certificate completed and registered. Then you're married in India!
Anyone can do this, it doesn't matter if it's an interracial, intercaste, or foreigner marriage in India.

At the same time i don't like relationships where it's like no one owes anyone anything, when you marry someone the other person becomes dependent on you for a lot of things and you cannot abandon them, too many single mothers in the west imo and that should not be a thing. Love the powerful statement by Manisha that she would never marry a beggar. The reason why dowry started in the first place was to help the new couple set up their household with small small gift from everyone. But at that point of time it was mainly utensils, a sewing machine, a fan, a bicycle or a radio. Other things given were any handicrafts, hand held fans called pakkhi or beddings like dari, chaadar etc woven or embroidered by the girl herself The girls were married of young and there were lot of restrictions at in-laws house for daughters-in-law. That's why the things that she might need there were given in dowry so that she might not feel comfortable asking for things there. Lately, it took the form of what is prevalent today in terms of dowry: show-off and demanding as a right by boys' side. Though not everyone is bad and there are loads of people who totally shum this practice which has turned evil due to some people's greed.

Dowry started not as means to pls the groom & his family but it was given to make the girl feel comfortable & resourceful in a new family, earlier only few furniture items such as dresser, bed, almirah, gold, clothing, etc were given but gradually it became a grooms right & it ranges from car to house etc

Alpha100 Because it was always like that. My grand father made property by doing double-triple jobs. My grandfather's step mom forced him to transfer that property my great grandfather. When my great grandfather Died ,sunce than it is disputed property and taken over by temprary tenents. In past older generation had quite dominence in families even at age of 80s-90s. How can you expect from bride of age hardly 16+ to fight in joint families with 5-9 brothers and sisters. There was no system to have sepration from elders. That means it become by default groom's families practice. This practice,I think started from elite class or royal class because marrying girls of victories kings with periodic tributes the winner king was most common thing. It was system of past as ritual ,no body can whitewash.

That's why dowry is not property share. Its just money for the groom. Women are regarded as 'paraya dhan'. Which means she is property of her groom's family.

In Islam, the man gives a dowry to the woman; also, the woman is not required to maintain herself, but she can work and do business if she wishes, with the proviso that all that she earns and owns cannot be taken in part or whole by her husband, although she can give whatever she wishes of her own free will. The purpose of the dowry is to make sexual intercourse between a man and a woman lawful. The woman can choose whatever she wants or she can remit it. She may ask for something as small as a piece of candy or something as great as a vault of gold. If divorce takes place before sexual intercourse has occurred, the dowry must be repaid to the husband.

When I was growing up & got to know about dowry thing I was amazed. I am an Indian but this is not suppose to be an INDIAN thing I don't appreciate it , infact its illogical. Why should a girl leave her family & pay for it too ? Who made this double cheating rule? Marriage is business dealing in India, soul union is just a filmy idea in reality it's all money, showbiz, etc I am glad that u two got hitched so simply but legally. I think only court marriage should only be allowed that way dowry can be curbed. Atleast I would do so if I will get married.🙊🙉🙈

The thing with dowry. It's not a gift, it's more like they're buying you, instead of selling a daughter. It's meant to make you a part of family money machine maker. Not taking the dowry makes you independent on your in-laws.

Actually it's the other way around what you guys discussed. The culture of dowry started since the British introduced a law which says girl cannot be the owner of the property. As a result of which, when the girls parents wanted to transfer her share of property after the wedding, it has to be transferred to her husband rather than the daughter! And a part of this weath transfer happened in the form of gold. Unfortunately it still continues but this is the real origin of the story.

Guys i am against marriage in the first place, but on conceptual base dowry seems fine to me, i know what is happening practically but like if you are 2 brothers and your father wishes a land property goes to one son and his liquid assets goes to second son , whats wrong with that? The other son can get real estate with those liquid assets, in the dowry case the other son takes the place of a daughter and what matters here is that are the liquid assets as much as what they gave to the son

Karnataka....naaahhh...who says dowry case is not there. I stayed in Bangalore from 1998-2006. At that time... College graduate price is 5-10 lakh, ( B.sc PT, B.Pharma, BCA, ) is 10-30 L depending on family status. BDS, MCA, Up to 50L. MBA, Engineer Grad. , Doctors Up to 2 Cr. God saves Bangalore aka Bengaluru... We love Alma mater city.

In fact dowry practices in modern India benefits women from upper classes . In majority of weddings upper class rich brides and their parents insist grooms to accept "gifts" which they can use as a blackmailing tool after wedding is over, as we have nasty draconian biased family laws in India. A woman can file false rape, torture, dowry harassment cases and can extort bounties many times more "the gift" which they had offered before wedding. Supreme court and other courts have acknowledged that family laws are rampantly misused by majority of women. In reality, the practice of demanding dowry has reduced drastically in last 3 decades, but feminists and politicians still use the so called "monster dowry" as a tool for their own interests. Karl you can visit any random police station or ask any lawyer anywhere in India about the reality of family laws and practice of dowry. In most cases they would acknowledge most cases are fake filed by wives to extort the husband side. Even a groom doesn't accept dowry/gift, he is expected to behave like a "slave". Any moment the wife or her parents can file cases to make the husband and his family members to fall in line. Marriage has become riskier adventure for Indian middle class men.

That's not a marriage, it's a marriage registration a legal issue. In order to get married, you have to accept and participate in a ritual ceremony then you register that marriage as having taken place. The real marriage is the ceremony, and the registration is the legal recording of it.
