Wind is overlooked often when it comes to these performance tests! Even on a 7% around 15 minute climb that I test myself around here, with the exact same bike and equipment, I could have identical power numbers up it 2 different efforts and be 20 seconds off of each other.

Good test with wheelsets the same weight. Real world racing with all the variables like drafting, tactics gets rid of most of the differences of bike performance unless one is one of the few strong enough to ride away from the peloton solo.

It would be wind direction rather wind speed. What many fail to realise is the sail effect works in both directions. One day it might actually help you out. But on other days it will literally push you backwards. You may have also felt uncomfortable with the way they handled. You alluded to this. I own both roval rapid clx and the alpinist clx. I much prefer the alpinist and there is bugger all differences in my times. Well with margins of error and tired none preforming days. What I do find is when I only owned the rapids I was looking at the weather a lot more, anything over 14-15mph stead wind 25-30mph gusts was plain dangerous with open farmland round here. Best bang for buck upgrade is tiers and the biggest (within reason) you can fit within the frame you will notice much more. Then Clothing wheel very much fall within the marginal gains territory especially once you go above 30mm in depth. Heck if silca are to be belived I can gain back the difference in watts by buy socks

Great video Cam as been thinking about a new wheelset .. 80mm is *very* deep so my gut would be 50/55 and not have so much air disruption. 100% agree just get fitter and drop the watts 💥

Peak torque has done some really interesting video on aero wheel testing, one thing that seems to be key is the tyre to rim interface being as smooth a transition as possible. I own 35 and 50mm wheels and it’s the 35 I prefer riding, the 50s are faster in the right conditions but the 35s are just better all round, they never feel twitchy and are lighter too. I reckon 35-40 is the Sweetspot.

this is the reason my first upgrade I'm leaning to lighter wheels. You're putting out 300W and not seeing a huge difference, I only put out 100W average in an area that's mostly climbing. Aero might help me on descent but I'm not putting out many watts to overcome aerodynamic drag at that point.

For some reason last year I was racing on my training wheels. Mavic kysrium's but this year I went to some tubeless Reynolds AR58 and in a standard road race I can average 20w less which gives me more energy for the sprint or trying to get into breakaways. I'm super close to obtaining my first cat licence now.

Getting faster by getting fitter is better all around and it is basically free. If you don’t put the effort in, there is zero difference in what bike and what wheels you have. Those myths are invented by middle aged doctors and bankers who need to justify a 10-20k bikes they don’t need nor can properly use.

1% faster is nearly 15 seconds. Just shows you that with the same weight wheelset, box rim vs 80mm, the performance difference is so minimal its hard to measure, especially when your power is flucuating by nearly 1% and position is likly chaning.

Junk integrated cockpits and optimise the position with narrower bars and more turned in hoods…far more bang for buck than high zoot wheels.
