My honest thoughts after riding and racing this $1300 Chinese-made wheelset: the Lún Hyper 50D. Carbon spokes, ceramic bearings, 50mm rims - but are they REALLY worth the money? And are they good enough to compete with bigger brands?

This review and riding footage was filmed in Girona, Catalunya, Spain; a cycling mecca that has been home to many professional cyclists including Ben O'Connor, Jack Haig, Esteban Chaves, Ryan Mullen, George Bennett, James Knox, Dorian Godon, Jay Vine, and at one point George Hincappie, Lance Armstrong and Tyler Hamilton. Girona is used for training for races such as the Tour de France, Volta Catalunya, Vuelta Espana, Paris-Nice, Giro d'Italia and more. Teams such as INEOS-Grenadiers, Israel-Premier Tech Pro Cycling, Human Powered Health, Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team, UAE Team Emirates and others use Girona for team training camps and rider testing. Lún wheels are the wheel brand of Winspace bikes, a Chinese carbon bicycle manufacturer producing performance equipment at affordable prices; Winspace make frames in their factory based in the carbon cycling manufacturing hub of Xiamen, China, and both Winspace and Lún are distributed worldwide.

I bought the 50mm Black Edition wheels February of 2022. The only problem I had with them was that bearings in the front needed more lubrication. I contacted Lun, and very quickly I received new bearing set. I wasn't expecting that. They have been hassle free ever since. I have ridden them over 10000 miles in the last year and they still look brand new and are as true as the day I took them out of the box. A few months ago I rode a 500 mile non stop ride and just earlier this week I did a 300 mile nonstop ride. I regularly get compliments from strangers and my cycling buddies of how good the wheels look. They are on my 2021 Trek Emonda SL5. For $1200, I think I got a great deal. I am glad I didn't go with the big brand names with the big brand prices. These wheels have been amazing! When I need another set of wheels, Lun will have my business again!

Hi Tristan , being 63 yr young this past summer i tryed a pair of the same wheels you have, rim brake only contenental 5000 25mm tires, having done 61km to my bike shop to do a switch of rims ( I have a pair of bontrager aeolus pro 5 ) on the back way home i got the KOM over a 26.29km segment avg of 39.6 km/hr , time of 39min 45 sec, with very little wind , my bike is a 2019 frame specialized tarmac not very aero, my first tarmac was from 2013, Anyway Pros of the wheel set was in cornering and getting up to speed the reaction of the wheels and maintaining the speed was really great much better than my regular wheels , the only downside was the road buzz coming through ,the handle bars , roads here are not that nice, what would probably be a solution is a tubeless set up ,happy to see you had great results with the wheel set , i did not have the possibility to do climbing with them as the weather was not good and i returned the wheel set after a week, i love climbing it is one of my mainstays when riding , wish you all the best this season , still winter here in quebec ca

Thanks Tristan good balanced review. Personally although Ido not "as yet" have anything from Winspace but..I really like the company & Joe's input. I love that they have not abandoned rim brakes in either their frames or wheels. I think they are really putting out nice products at nice prices & have only read good things. Wow Tristian, what a review! I have been riding Hypers on three bikes since 2020. They are very popular in our cycling group. As you stated very affordable. Haven’t had any issues at all. Great validating review to forward to non-believers or those looking to upgrade.

About the ceramic bearings, yes if you have 100% ceramic bearings they will last a long time If you have hybrid ceramic (which you already have) they won't last more ! Why? Because the balls inside the bearing are ceramic and the race of the bearing is steel, so the harder material which is ceramic while eat the softer, and you will be in for bearing replacement pretty soon !

Another great video, really enjoy you content. Just over a year in Hyper 38 wheels. Absolutely love them, saved 400g switching from another Chinese brand (55mm). Acceleration out of corners and climbing are highs alongside the weight. I have just replaced 1 front wheel bearing after about 12k on rough Perth WA roads. Looking to get a gravel set to upgrade my Grizl.

Great video. I purchased the Luan Hyper 65s for my BH Ultralight and though I should have got the 50s the 65s are still outstanding wheels especially for the flat terrain that I ride. I have been caught in 25mph cross winds with 35 mph cross wind gusts and while you need to stay focused to quickly correct, it really was not that bad but I am a heavier rider at 6’3” and 185lbs. Good to hear the the Pirelli P Zero Race TLRs are good tires as they will be going on my aero bike this summer.

Solid video. I have been on HYPER Wheels and the LUN wheels for as long as anyone in the USA. Multiple years now. With the wheels, there has never been a problem and I have been riding them up to 5 days a week, year long. Raced them in our regional races in the USA. As well as in the Philippines, under some of the most challenging conditions and natural elements imaginable. For me, the Hyper Wheels and LUN Wheels have been 100% great. Not one negative issue for me, and I ride the wheels quite hard I must admit.

These are great for people looking for good wheels at a fair price. I still love my DT Swiss and ENVY wheels; however, this video was very well prepared

Nice review Tristan. Very informative. My query relates to crosswinds: how did the 50mm Lun’s Hyper handle those winds as opposed to a straight line direction. I’m from Perth, Australia, and crosswinds is all we have here. Apparently 😂

Thanks mate. They’re definitely noticeable in the crosswind and I have to pay far more attention when taking my hands off the bars (as with any deeper wheelset). I wouldn’t say they’re any worse than any other deeper wheelset I’ve tried though, and the newer 2023 model wheels would definitely be a better option if you’re looking at Hyper’s. They’ve got a slightly shallower front rim than rear rim, plus a different profile (more of a U than a V) that should make crosswinds less of an issue.

Loved the review and a big up for your great race results. Did you already ride the DT Swiss ARC 50s enough to give a performance comparison? (regardless the difference in price) And if not, can you give a comparison based on your first impression of the DT Swiss 50s?

I haven’t ridden the DT Swiss enough to give a confident comparison, however from very initial impressions (a handful of rides on the DT Swiss vs 4000km on the Hyper’s) I’d say the Hyper’s actually “feel” lighter. I haven’t looked at individual weight from the rims from each brand but the Hyper’s climb lighter in my limited experience. They both aren’t great in crosswinds unless you have both hands on the bars but that’s to be expected from any deeper wheelset. For the money and the literal zero issues I’ve had with the Hyper’s, they’re extremely competitive, and the new 2023 models have some nice updates that make them even more of an attractive choice.

Re the Pirelli P Zero Race vs the P Zero Race SL, I also found a massive difference in effort/rolling with the SL. You should try yours tubeless :)

I have the original Hyper 50's (1,350 gram rim brake model that cost around $900 at the time) from 2020 as well with around 4,000 miles on mine (I also use the Lun 30's for more day-to-day use), and love the 50's. They feel faster than my 30's on both the uphills and downhills, and obviously at higher speeds on the flats. I haven't had any issues with the bearings yet, but will be swapping them out with non-ceramic ones soon. They are a handful in super windy/gusty conditions (almost got blown off the road before in a strong crosswind), but what deep wheels aren't....and they actually handle the wind FAR better than my old Enve 3.4's, which were a pile of $3,000 crap. I'd buy these wheels all day over the "boutique" brands. Only semi-downside is they're suuuuuper stiff laterally, which makes sharp turn-ins feel a bit weird over wheels that have a little flex to them....that took a little getting used to, but not a problem really. Obviously it's a plus though when out of the saddle hammering on the pedals. Never got a water bottle with any of my wheels though (I own 3 sets of Winspace wheels - two road and one gravel). My Hypers work perfectly with my 25mm Schwalbe Pro One TLE's, which is what the Hypers were designed for.

@@tristantakevideo Yep, my 50's are about 50 grams lighter than the 30's (bare wheels) and currently running the 30's with Conti tubes, and the 50's tubeless....so the difference is pretty noticeable. If I didn't move to a flatter area (lived in southern California for 5 years, which had an endless supply of steep and long climbs), I'd get the Hyper 38's for climbing, but don't really need them here in southern Arizona. Mt. Lemmon here isn't particularly steep, just 25 miles long. One thing I forgot to mention is that I've noticed the freehub body falls off quite easily on all my wheelsets - was swapping tires on my gravel wheels yesterday, and the freehub/cassette fell off and hit me in the foot....reminded me to not tip the wheel over on the cassette side. I forgot about that "feature" lol

I ride with someone who loves this wheel set and I guess my question for you is how it compares to, say, the Zipp 303 Firecrest. You mentioned you had a usual pair of rims, which I assume are more expensive and (presumably?) work better. Can you make a recommendation/comparison for an ideal 40-50 mm deep wheel set for a lighter rider such as yourself? Also, thank you for this thoughtful review. I like seeing you relate how it feels to race with the components, which provides a context for where and when one might benefit.

what about rider weight limit on the wheelset? you mentioned it has some flex and you could get a stiffer set, are these pretty flexible under a lot of load? Being 114kg, I'm always cautious of the more cost effective brands as I've had some failures on bikes and wheelsets too.

So this is a tricky one - the maximum weight limit (bike+rider+equipment) is listed as 135kg but it’s suggested as having wheels regularly inspected if you’re above 95kg. Which leads me to want to say they aren’t the wheels for you. That 40kg discrepancy is too much to confidently recommend them for 100kg+ riders. I have done sprints at 1200w and had zero issues, but I weigh 61kg so it’s a very different story for me.

Damn! What a weapon. U were smoking those climbs as well as staying away so long solo. Also being a stiff wheelset they also may not be very comfortable for average punters on some of the rough coarse chip roads we have here, and in some countries.

Its depend your riding environment. If you are always riding in wet condition, dirty road lot of sand & dirt, the ceramic bearing won't last as long as steel bearings. Just buy steel bearings NSK VV, NTN LLB or any equivalent hi-quality steel bearing. Hi-quality steel bearings are significantly less expensive than ceramic bearings. Just don't hear any bike company tell that ceramic bearings is better especially those who sell OSPW shite. The only thing that make OSPW run smoother because of the bearings itself, not the Over Size Pulley Wheels. The part that you can go for ceramic bearings is in pulley wheels. Significantly low load & less expensive, probably can last longer in bad weather and road condition. Just don't buy it from bike brand, buy it from bearings manufacturer like nsk/ntn/etc.

Most of the advantages/disadvantages you are talking about in the video make sense, but I doubt you could really 'feel' them. Of course you are an experienced and well above average cyclist so the wheels make a bigger difference at your power, but even then I would say most of the effects you 'felt' because you knew what you 'should' feel. Would love to see a double blind controlled trial regarding cycling equipment, but of course it's quite complicated to do :D. Personally, I would say it's very hard to feel a 5-10 watt difference.

The point you were trying to make is that the effects of the wheels were psychosomatic rather than genuinely perceptible. The issue with this is that you haven’t ridden the two sets of wheels I speak about in the video. So telling me that because YOU can’t imagine noticing the difference, I shouldn’t be able to, is like me saying that because I can’t play the guitar you shouldn’t be able to.

Nice vid! I really wonder how these stack up against Elite wheels. The weight of elite wheels is a lot lower, they also have ceramic bearings and carbon spokes. Lower price. In theory they should end the discussion about having to choose between weight and aero as they are 1300 grams.

I got these and the bearings were very rough right out of the box. They sent me new bearings, but even with the new ones they still feel bad. Total waste of money. But hey, maybe I am just a one off.

About your last point of having the additional weight when accelerating, you're comparing them to a shallower carbon wheelset right? But they're still going to be lighter than most aluminium rims. So you get both an improvement in weight and aerodynamics if you're switching from standard aluminium wheels to these hyper 50s, or am I wrong?

Whichever material the wheel is made from, the lighter the rim, the lighter the wheel will “feel” when riding. As carbon is often lighter than alloy (even in a deeper depth), you can have both weight and aerodynamics in one package, correct.

Pretty interesting hey? I was skeptical initially because all brands say their wheels are the best, but these Hyper’s genuinely took me by surprise.

I’ve had a pair of their 50s. They were crap. It amounted to two broken spokes within the first 6 months and constantly going out of true. I rode the wheels on standard Aussie roads and they were never crashed or mistreated. What’s worse is when I asked for warranty they led me down the garden path and it took AGES to get a refund even when I sent the wheels back and paid for postage. BUYER beware.

Ceramic bearings don’t last longer… They require more maintenance and are deteriorating bearing hubs faster. Please don’t spread fake info.

From what I understand the ceramic ball is more perfectly spherical and roll faster assuming the race profile is also machined with a high level of accuracy. I’m not sure anyone buys ceramic thinking they will last longer but only they are faster due to the marginally lower friction. Assuming these higher tolerances are present they should in theory last longer. In any bearing system the roller is usually the sacrificial material it could be the opposite with ceramic. I have set of zipp404s from about 2005 that have silicon nitride bearings and they roll as smooth as the day I bought them.

Yep, not necessarily ideal "It’s clear that Alan and Paul agree that the factors that make a ceramic bearing well-suited to industrial and medical equipment applications, and high-altitude operating drone motors (Paul does a lot of work designing drones) where the rpm is high, the load is low and the operating conditions are clean, are factors that mean they’re not suited to cycling."
