This is a £60 tyre, this is a £100 tyre and THIS is a £150 track tyre. We’re going to do some laps on each tyre to see which gains us the most time for the money.
Here are three sets of tyres, a budget set, a premium set and some semi-slick track tyres. We're going to do some laps on each of these tyres - to see which gain us the most time for the money. We’re trying to beat a supercar with just £15,000.
Last time out we fitted a set of BC Racing coilovers which really exposed how bad our old tyres are. In this episode, we’ll compare an eco tyre, a performance tyre and a track tyre to figure out which one we should go with. Let’s look at what we’ve got.

When i stripped my CRX down to bare metal with a single plastic racing bucket and did a stage 1 NA tune, weighed under 1000lbs, it would float over rough stuff and fly like a WRC car over cattle grates at full send, and you want practicality? I can hose out the 50-100lbs of desert i pick up in the form of cowshit, dust and gravel during a drive. I was a rollcage and a few other mods away from passing tech for rally when a drunk driver t-boned me and wrecked it.

When you look at how cringe making bad the American version of Top Gear is with it's huge budget and C-List celebrities, you appreciate just how well theses lads are doing. The banter feels real on this channel, but so obviously staged and false on TG America. Together with Driver 61, Scott's channels are also way more informed and informative. Super happy with your tire choice!! If you are doing brakes next, please for the love of god don’t but a big Brembo brake kit. Big brakes only help with heat dissipation, letting you get full performance lap after lap. If you’re only doing a few laps, get some quality fluid and track pads, like carbotech xp24s. Will squeal really loudly below 300 degrees but when warm, they quiet down and BITE
@howarddavies136

@turbo_brian
@turbo_brian Жыл бұрын
You can most likely get enough braking torque from the stock caliper to lock up the wheels, aka the maximum braking torque you can use. Even those grippy tires can still be locked up most likely. An aggressive pad compound and a quality rotor is all thats needed. Centric 125 series high carbon rotors and hawk hp + pads would be my recommendation if available.
@vr6one
@vr6one Жыл бұрын
They can't focus too much on braking. Brakes alone aren't going to solve their 6 second problem and they can easily eat up 3k in a brake setup. The op is right, pads, better rotors and fresh fluid will be enough for a single lap. This is a sprint not a Marathon
@howarddavies136
@howarddavies136 Жыл бұрын
@@vr6one you're right. On this budget and for this purpose, a BBK is probably overkill. If I was in their shoes, I'd probably do pads, a flush and maybe braided lines. I suspect the best improvement will be when they inevitably strip it.

@@loupcordeille-bougault3474 Lol you don't need interior to daily it, in fact you have more room for groceries making it an even BETTER grocery getter without all that extra stuff lol. I've daily driven plenty of 'lightened' vehicles, better mileage, better performance, spill resistance. It's nice to be able to hose off the interior when it fills up with rocks and dust from the desert. You want it to be a 'supercar'? Lambo uses skateboard grip tape on bare floorboards and CHARGES EXTRA for the 'lightweight' option of no carpet or headliner. And besides, supercars aren't exactly daily drivers, a bigger challenge will be to bring your Lambo to Wal-Mart, Costco, the gym, the vape shop, the post office and Home Depot for a year like it's a Scooby lol.

Great series however I have some suggestions. Is there a way you can use a more accurate method of timing the laps. Pressing start and stop on your phone is bound to cause incosistencies due to human error and reaction speed. Another is that it is proabably best to do a run of 3 or so laps and take the average as the result you go by.

But I think the definition of open wheel car is up to subject, as some people argue it should be single seater, or on the contrary some argue a KTM X-Bow is open wheel while it's still contained in the body. And Pog Tuber, the whole point of my com was to get wider rims and wider tyres, and yes I expect it'd have made a lot of difference especially when they're happy with 3s gain with these thin wheels

Aafaik the extra width is to spread the force+heat over more area, allowing the tyres to survive (a bit longer) the abuse of a powerful engine and hard braking. In a single lap a wider wheel might well suffer from being too hard to keep at ideal temps.

I've just got back from Nurburgring for the first time, using AR-1s on the track...i can confirm they are awesome. For context i previously used Ad08R on track and daily Goodyear Eagle F1's asym 5 on my road wheels - Just found your channel -sub'd- i look forward to more. :)

Cool video and very interesting finding. However, with the freshly fresh tires it’s not gonna be the REAL performance these tires can go to. A retest after the running in on the UHPs and AR1s would be great. The AR1 especially gets SOOO much better after a like 200mi. A bit of scrubbing won’t do enough, IMHO

Looks like big brakes are coming up soon for this wagon! That and maybe some Aero bits like a front splitter and roof wing.

Everyone's looking at the brake sparks, but just look at how satisfying the tire deformation is it in the clip at 8:43

Sway bars and strut braces next! No idea what the Subaru aftermarket prices are like or how stiff the chassis is from factory, but for my Volvo you'll have front and rear for €500. Before I installed sway bars I wasn't sure how much difference a thicker squiggly line under my car would make. It makes quite the difference! It doesn't mount the curbs as easily anymore, although that downside is overshadowed by the amount of grip you gain. Adding a strut brace allows you to get the most out of it. My Volvo was pretty flexible from factory, so again, no idea what it does for a Subaru.
