I tell my 22 year old son all the time...we didn't have these opportunities when growing up in the 60s and 70s. I tell him to take advantage of the internet to start a business or start a KZfaq channel. Thanks for sharing this. I have plans to start an Etsy shop myself. I'm definitely going to do it now.

Same here! I've been slow to open sticker businesses in the past for my art as well, especially when people talk about specific subject matters being too high-trafficed or having not as much revenue, and it can be discouraging to get into (unintentionally). These days, I'm planning on opening a sticker shop anyways now that I've graduated college (regardless of whether it's successful to other people's standards or not, it's something I'm finally willing to do more so for my own enjoyment of selling my artwork in sticker form as a side-hustle)! ^^

I just finished listening/watching your sticker shop series while I was working and they were really great! I like to hear about different people's experiences and I enjoyed your series so much because it felt a lot less "get rich quick" scheme feeling. I appreciated your transparency with your experiences throughout them. I also enjoyed the chill vibe. This has gotta be one of the most chill entrepreneur videos I’ve watched so far XD. I also started a sticker/pins/3D print shop about a year and a half ago with my partner to help earn some extra income when he got laid off. People actually don’t buy many stickers/pins from us and mostly just sell the handful of 3D prints we designed… However I really enjoy running the shop and being able to turn a lot of my doodles into tangible things. It’s especially exciting when someone orders something that’s my original character! Fortunately for me, I only do this as a side hustle and it’s not my main source of income so I feel like I have the freedom to create what I want rather than only making things hoping they sell which is the opposite of the day job. However I do find creating things for our little shop more fulfilling than any other work! Hopefully we’ll continue to sell enough so I can roll it over to have more new things made. It’d be cool to see an organization/packing station setup video! I love seeing how people organize things. I wish you the best on your sticker shop journey and look forward to future stories!

I'm hoping to use what I'm learning from you and other KZfaqrs to supplement my income by selling my art online. You're right -- when I was your age, there was nothing like this. Far fewer opportuities and options back then. I'm always happy and inspired to see young people like yourself making the most of KZfaq and other such platforms. Go for it. I’ve made over $50,000 each year on Etsy for a good number of years. I’m no longer making that much. It’s almost barely anything now but I’m okay about it, as I want to move away from Etsy due to their current ethos. I just have this huge feeling Etsy gives new shops with potential “in their eyes” a lot of exposure for the first year or two. I got heaps of exposure initially which really helps. Then your on your own and you have to figure out how to scale. I personally wouldn’t get into stickers I don’t think ( although do have a circuit machine and print my stickers for my business) as it’s a hell of a lot of work for not a huge amount in profit margins. I looked into it, but I sell art which can sell at a much higher price point with much higher profit margins (especially if you do it in house). Doing in house though causes a lot of mess though and really I would need a studio ( I shared one at one time). But due to chronic illness that’s all been put on the back burner.

You’d think it’s a problem people dream of having but wow it really made me debate whether the money was even worth it. It’s insanely hard to balance it with a full time job when you get to the point where every minute of your free time is consumed by your side hustle like you mentioned. You work 24/7 365. Ultimately ended up taking a break and being one of those people who went “vacation mode”. My body was begging for a mental health break

Yeah, I'm not on expert on tax at all. I would get an accountant earlier than you think you need one. If you're not making money yet, a lot of cities have free resources for small businesses. Look around your local gov't website. Hope that helps and thanks for watching :)

Can you do a video of packaging your orders? You mentioned how you used to take so long to package each order, and that you had to get faster with the influx of orders. I'm still in that slow packaging phase, I'd love to see and learn from how your systematically package the orders!
@TimKoa

It's on the list for videos! Best piece of actionable advise is to batch tasks. Eg for stickers: instead of printing an order, cutting an order, packaging an order, etc. Print all your orders at once, then cut all your orders at once, then package all your orders at once. Hope that helps!

Hi Tim. Great video. Looking at your monthly income chart, I noticed it peaked in August and began to slow down. Then I thought about business cycles and what kinds of events in August might cause an increase in sticker sales. The only thing I could come up with was teachers purchasing back to school supplies. It would be interesting to see if this pattern continues for you next year. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for being so transparent about your work. A sticker shop comes with quite a lot of material costs - what was your net profit (after taxes?). Also it would be great if you could make a video on how and which systems you put in place to work as efficient as you did. Going from 50/ month to several thousand/month in a couple of months requires quick and efficient systems to be able to fullfill the orders. Best wishes
@TimKoa
@TimKoa 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura, I actually find material costs for stickers to be really low in comparison to other types of stores (aside from digital products). As mentioned, I sell orders for $13-14 and material costs (paper, ink, packaging) per order is around $2.50. Of course there's other costs too like Etsy fees + shipping, and I do pay for Etsy ads which I'm going to be going through in an upcoming video. I can't really say what after-tax profits are as my accountant is still working on that for last year, but it's highly dependent on where you live anyways so not sure it would be much help to you. And I will do a video on how I dispatch orders, but it's a lot of work to make those types of videos so I've been procrastinating on it 😅 Thanks for the comment, which you the best! :)

Enjoyable as ever, very clear and open. As you say you are lucky to have achieved as much as you have as quickly as you have. Many Etsy shop owners dream of the figures you are making. So it was nice to see you realise where you are at. And I had a wry smile when your sales were going down and you were looking around to blame someone. We all do it. That's why the forum is rife with this discussion. We forget to look beyond Etsy. Etsy is governed by the search engines around it as well. And yes algorithms change, ya da ya da. As you recommend, taking the longer view is much better. Every business can't or won't see growth every quarter or even every year. Businesses on Etsy are no different. It's the nature of business. Well done for opening another platform off Etsy. Smart. Would love to see a video on this.

At the end you became very inspirational with your speech. And there is so much truth to that. People tend to forget that everybody started as a newbie. Even the biggest people in history started as newbies. If they never tried then they never would have learned and they never would have been as big as they've become. You don't really need papers for 90% of what people do in life. Most of it is motivation and really wanting something. Because that is what makes you want to learn and grow with it. It's like relationships as well. If you are able to be open, learn and grow together then it will grow into a longterm something that is worth it. And it won't be one time, it will continue because growing and learning will never stop if you do it right. Nobody is ever truly done with learning and growing. Great video and thank you for the time you take to explain it all to us. It is truly appreciated.
