I graduate with my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science this September and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this video for how realistic it is. Social media had me feeling so behind because starting out, i’m not qualified for the jobs making $100k+ a year due to experience and overall knowledge of my skills currently. This brought me back to reality knowing that yes, I can be a real developer even if I don’t work at google and even if the starting salary is $50-62k a year.

Huge congrats on getting your CS Degree! Social media often makes us feel like we're all lagging behind, doesn't it? But yeah, there is a whole other world out there where you can still make a great living for yourself as a developer without working in big tech. I'm so happy this struck a chord with you :)

Very realistic journey. My first job was an 12.50$/h internship while still in school. First real job in 2019 was 60k jump to 2024, 1 real raise 2 job hops and now 120k salary.

I have had a similar path and experience, and pretty much the same outcome in my developer journey. I'm beyond happy where I am now as a Senior Frontend Developer and am also remote. This guy gives good advice, folks. As far as I know, no relation, by the way. Oddly enough, my middle name is Kenneth, too.

So true. I wish you could make these conversations more catchy than the 0.001% making a half mill a year. It’s better for expectations and imposter syndrome for all these smart kids in the industry.

Your channel is a gem man. I've checked on KZfaq and I haven't seen coding journeys and videos on how to get into programming like yours. I want to get into programming because I like tech, and your channel has been very helpful so far. Keep it up, can't wait to see more from you!

Coming from a "non-traditional" route of being a developer, I've had a very similar experience. It's great to see this style of video being made on salaries outside of FAANG, which seems to dominate on youtube. Always enjoy your videos!
@willdazns

I also went a non traditional route (started in research labs and now working in a major tech company outside the FAANG circle). I've seen my compensation leap from ~$100k to ~$300k in just 4 years, thanks to strategic job-hopping across three roles. Can attest that this approach really pays off!

Our outcomes were similar although I managed to stay at my first and only job which is great, because like you, i also like my current job (especially my boss). I started out at 50k and am now making 120k 5 years later. Thats an average 20% raise per year within the same company which is mostly unheard of so ive been very lucky in that regard. Unfortunately, I'm getting close to the ceiling salary-wise since i work for a small business so sooner or later ill need to look elsewhere for my next big salary bump.

Easy to say there are parts of peoples lives when they "shouldnt care about money" but a low/no paying gig doesnt pay rent, bills, groceries, medial care, daycare, vet bills, etc. Everyone deserves a living wage even interns and apprentices.
