Is 0.6 gallon is what you water at one time a week ? Can you slit it up twice a week at 0.3?

@@Ronelbey Yes it would be advisable to split it up. If you were watering twice a week it would be 4.5 cups each time. The older your plants get the longer they can go without more frequent waterings. I water mine more frequently when they are young and have a shallower root system. Some plants require a little more water, some a little less. Peppers for example like to dry out a little. Similarly tomatoes taste better when they are allowed to dry out a bit too. so complex.

Finally someone explains what the notorious one inch per week actually means. Thank you! I've installed a drip tape system with emitters that emit .25 gallons per hour and there is essentially an emitter every square foot in my raised beds, so run it for 3 hours and it's about the one inch per week. Hard to imagine that it's that simple. My drip system is on top of woven fabric and it seems to be running off a lot before it soaks through, so I'll probably start with 3 times per week and cut it back from there. Next year, watering system under the fabric. Thanks again!

Thank you SO MUCH for this. Just having some kind of concrete idea of how much water to give them helps. I've been able to find how many inches of water each type of plant I'm growing likes, so knowing it's per square foot is enormously helpful in figuring out how much to give!

Thank you so much.

Two weeks ago I did the calculations and its comparable to your results of 5/8 US-Gal per square foot of growing space. Where I live, we depend upon rainfall for growing. To maintain plant vigor and productivity, I am watering 1/2 inch per week on a 3-5 day cycle to maintain good soil moisture, deep watering is better than a little every day. My plants are mulched to conserve water and I use a moisture meter to know when to water the garden before the plants droop.

Can't wait for your video on shade cloth since I live in Florida and the HEAT is on!! I have tomatoes -eggplant- pole Asian long beans -and okra in garden. I'm worried about tomatoes - seeds I got from you. They germinated beautiful and started fruiting immediately- unbelievable!! Anyways I want them to go well right now I have pvc pipe in hoops and draped black screening over to keep heat down. But shade cloth probably would be better? Don't know. I saw a video on a unit made with pvc pipe with connecters and the shade cloth attached to that. That looked like a nice way plus cost effective and portable. Please don't wait too long to talk about ok? Thanks!! Love your videos !

You made it unnecessarily complicated. It's not needed to get *exact* numbers and conversions that are difficult to understand (how much is 0.6 gallons, anyway?). Just say that half a gallon per square foot, per week (much better if applied one quart every three days) is a good start. Some plants (radishes, for example), about 12 plants per square foot, will share that 1 gallon easily; Other plants that are heavy drinkers (tomatoes) will ocuppy TWO square feet per plant, and could be better served taking one gallon every three days. They also need some sort of fertilizing, water alone will not produce good tomatoes. Don't get too technical with quantities, because other factors, like sun exposure, heat, the quality of the soil, availability (or lack of) fertilizer etc, will throw your numbers off real quick.

It seems that when I water my plants do worse. Could it be the chlorinated tap water? Especially the summer squash, cucumbers, winter squash and lettuce seem to hate it and a few leaves will yellow and get brown edges. The nightshades are ok with it and spinach and bulb and root crops. The squashes and cuces recover alright after a natural rain.

I use the following method: 1st convert your area to centimeters (because cubic centimeters is equivalent to milliliters) - a 4' x 8' garden would be 4x12x3.54 and 8x12x3.54 (feet->inches->cm). then multiply those two numbers, and take that and multiple by 3.54 (1 inch depth of water). The reason is that 1cc is equivalent - now take the final number (now in ml) divide by 3800 (3.8 liters = 1 gallon) should give you the # gallons in 1" of water for 4' x 8' - OOOOR you could use the easy peasy conversion shown above in the video.

Good Tips! I just use the finger rule. I stick my finger in the dirt. It should be moist. I also have been using soaker hoses 1/2 hour everyday at 730AM. Well thats if it hasnt rained in a while. Garden has more than enough water will all the rain. I highly recommend using mulch. I used hay this year and it help a ton with weeds and moisture. It was also much cheaper than using hardwood mulch. if your watering your lawn you can place a pan out where you want to water and time how long it takes your sprinkler to fill it to 1" that's how long you need to water.

It's all about working out the volume. You need 1 inch height of water, over an area of 1 foot by 1 foot. So the volume of water you need, for 1 square foot is: 1 inch height x 12 inches width x 12 inches length = 144 inches cubed of water in volume (Remember, 1 foot = 12 inches) Volume can be measured in various units: 144 inches cubed is equivalent to: 2359 cm cubed 2.3 liters 0.6 gallons 4.2 pints 10 cups

I had some bumps show up on the stem of one of them after a too generous watering so I'm giving it a few days break to dry and breathe. Does 3-4 days without water seem reasonable after overwatering? I repoted one of them today to a much bigger pot and the soil was mostly dry (I haven't watered them for the last 48h) but I want to be sure they had time to bounce back because I water them again. They're flowering so I think they're doing pretty well despite that mistake

So do you walk around each bed with a watering can filled to the exact right amount for each plant and then go back and fill it up for the next plant? Isn't that time consuming? What do you do if you are watering via a hose?
@ballsdeep9648
@ballsdeep9648 6 жыл бұрын
Roslyn Williams you could probably turn your hose on at the pressure/ flow rate that you usually use to water your plants. Then aim it into a one gallon container and count how long that takes to fill up. Then you know about how many seconds it takes to spray one gallon. Soon you should get an idea/ feel for it and not have to count. Just a thought...

Fortunately, when using the metric system no converter is needed once you remember that 1 inch equals 2.54 centimeter (cm). So, 144 cubic inch equals 144 x 2.54 x 2.54 x 2.54 cubic cm, which is approximately 2400 cubic cm, and that gives you 2.4 liters. That's how easy it is!

okay, so if I'm running a drip irrigation system that is rated at 10 GPH on a bed that 80 sq. ft. (8x10 bed). So, I should be using 48 gallons (80 sg. ft. x .06) per week. 48 gallons /7 days= 7 gallons per day. If I run my drip irrigation 1 hour per day, I would be overwatering by 3 gallons per day. That would waste alot of water.

I heard you can set an empty tuna can next to a plant and spray the plant until there is an inch of water in the can. Will this work? Needless to say, I'm no master gardener. ;-) My healthiest plants are my native plants (milkweed, cup plant, sweet black-eyed susan, goldenrod) THAT I DO NOT WATER AT ALL....I wonder if chlorine and other chemicals in tap water are affecting some of the plants I water that have a pale appearance.

What about if you are growing in pots? How do you measure that?

This guy is knowledgable and covers a lot of good topics. IMO he could have a much more successful channel if he edited down A LOT. His standard videos run 12/13 minutes; they could easily be 4. This one could have been 2. He should watch his videos and prune them down. Hate to be "the guy in a rush", but I am not. I have a long attention span, but I am busy and superfluous commentary turns me off. Give me the info and let me move on. Now that I have looked this gift horse in the mouth, thanks for the videos. Keep it up.

This method rests squarely on the type of plant in your garden. Say for example you are growing a crop of wheat or tea. These crops thrive on more water than say the black eyed pea, making this over complicated if you were to mix the two. All I do is water thoroughly and mist. Hasn't failed me yet.

I didn't understand a single thing, it started to sound complicated so I got frustrated. I've waited my entire life to have a garden but 2 years straight everything's yellow and dying, Ive read plants can turn yellow from over and under watering though and don't know which I'm doing (my kale has bugs everywhere, my tomatoes have bumps on the stems and the tomatoes never look normal). I wish I had 1 real life gardening friend to show me but how long to hold the hose over a plant would be helpful.

Love this video. Would love to know the formula if I didn’t have a calculator. 12x12=144 (x~?) = .6

It's about working out the volume: If you're looking at an area of 12 inches by 12 inches, then the volume you need is: 12x12x1 = 144 inches cubed (that "1" is the 1 inch of water that will sit on top of the 12x12 inch area) 144 inches cubed can then be converted to other volume amounts. Just type into google "144 inches cubed into gallons" and it'll give you the gallon amount you need. The formula would be: "Volume of water you need in inches cubed (V) = Length of container in inches (L) x Width of container in inches (W) x Height of water in inches (H)" ie V = L x W x H (H height is always equal to 1 inch because in the recommendation is that we need to water 1 inch height of water per week) That will give you the amount you need in inches cubed. Then convert that to gallons (or liters or cups etc) by asking google to do the conversion for you.

If there's 2 inches of rain in one week, can we not water the following week if there's no rain.
