Why does anyone buy such a relatively expensive fish, a gorgeous fish with gorgeous fins, and then put him in a tank that's too small for him to swim? It's mesmerizing watching Cosmo swim all around his planted 10-gallon tank. They love to swim.

To make matters worse, they also have just bought one of the smartest aquarium fish around.... and one of the few that are known for being capable of bonding to individual people. That's the fish they choose to purposely abuse... The one that actually wants to be with people and can tell thier owners apart from everybody else. Why?!? 😰

Agreed, no matter the size of tank so far, betta swims the entire tank in seconds. They want to swim and play which smaller tanks just don't offer. Started with 5 gallon now up to 29 planted and he does laps.

Yeah I don't understand that sentiment either. Any animal can need medication, special treatment, maybe special food or whatever. Bottomline is, if you get a living animal unexpected costs will happen. If you cannot even afford a 5 gallon tank, don't get an animal. It's not like the tank will be the main expense anyways.

When I started out keeping betta, I was biased towards males because of their appearance. But as the time went by and I learned more and more about them, I found out that females are real angels. They tend to interact with me more and one of my girls even let me pet her. No hate towards males, they are just harder to train and I love all of them. I just want to encourage you guys to give a chance of buying a female betta and have some time with her. You will be obsessed with her too.

With my very limited betta experience, I was biased towards females, thinking I didn't want to keep a fish by itself and that the females are more docile and will more easily accept tank mates. Not necessarily true! I have a Fluval Flex 15; plenty big for a betta and some small peaceful fish. I had two platys in it, and added the female betta. Within an hour she "claimed" the entire aquarium and was constantly chasing the platys. The next morning, one of the two platys was dead. I returned the female and bought another like her. Within an hour she was doing the same thing. (I took her back immediately.) My point is that fish have personalities, and some females can be as aggressive as the males are supposed to be.

I had a few neon tetras in my tank before I got my betta (to get the bacteria in the filter going) and he ate the tail off one of the tetras... Safe to say he lost his tank buddies quite quickly (they were moved back into my mother's tank where they're thriving without having tails chewed off.)

My male betta has his own 10 gallon tank with a heater and a sponge filter. My female is in my planted 29 gallon small community tank. She doubled in size in the first two weeks of being in that tank and is a beautiful rich blue color. Years ago I bred my bettas and ended up with a sorority of sisters, and a bunch of small separate tanks for the males. I stopped breeding them because I ran out of space for tanks for the male babies!

I LOVE having a male beta in my community tanks. I had one beta in a tank with many types of fish, including a tiger barb. The barb loved chasing the fish with long fins and I wasn't sure what to do about it. When I began considering returning the barb to the store I noticed a new behavior from my male beta. When the barb started chasing the other fish, my beta would swim right in front of the barb and flare up in a fighting pose. The beta would back the barb into a corner of the tank, without touching it at all, and keep it there for a minute or so. Then the beta would swim back to his favorite place in a plant at the top of the tank. The barb would leave the corner and start chasing a fish again. Immediately the beta put the barb back in time out. This would happen a few times more, with greater time passing before the barb started chasing again. The beta never hurt the barb, but was not going to allow it to bully the other fish. It took nearly a week, with the barb chasing the fish less and less often, but the barb finally stopped chasing the other fish entirely! We named the beta Sentinel because he was the guardian of the tank. 😄

Another myth: Bettas are just dumb fish. The truth: They are actually one of the smartest aquarium fish species around! They are highly trainable and can be taught all kinds of tricks such as jumping for a treat, jumping through hoops, swimming onto platforms (or flat leaves) on command, following your finger, flaring on your command, and even responding to thier own name! Another incredible ability that shows thier intelligence is thier ability to form unique bonds to individual people. They are also very playful and can play with toys, even sharing them with thier owners if taught correctly. They are also much more emotionally complex than most fish species and can experience true frustration and depression. Unfortunately, this often leads to deliberate self-harm such as fin biting.

What are some good betta toys?😊
@kidwolf0015
@kidwolf0015 2 жыл бұрын
@@siobhan5214 There's a lot of options... Print-free ping pong balls of various colors (and even sizes if you can somehow find miniature ones), various sizes of plastic rings with no sharp edges (if it can cut pantyhose, it's too sharp), fluval "moss balls" (these are fluffier than ping pong balls), toy floaty logs, flat fish-safe leaves (might not sound like a toy.. but bettas definitely play with them), and even betta "hamocks". Keep in mind that like all intelligent pets, different bettas will prefer different toys or different play time lengths. Occasionally, you may find one that doesn't want the extra stimulation at all. Keep an eye out for stress siginals like sudden faded color, stress stripes, excessive flaring, hard bitting (not little nips), and general avoidance. Obviously, if your betta shows any of these signs you should stop for a while. If your betta reacts the same way to that toy multiple times over then it's probably not a good option for them.

I got back into fishkeeping (namely betta keeping!) after a 5+ year hiatus and I'm _so_ happy to be back. I currently only have one boi named Edwin but I love him so much. He was the saddest little betta in Petco. He had one dorsal clamped to his side, had signs of finrot, and didn't want to move. After a few months of TLC, he's now an amazing little guy! He's so active despite his delta tail and is so personable! His dorsal is nearly healed up though the original silk plants I had in his tank decided to eat his tail. Thankfully, it's starting to grow back! I want to get one of the fancier betta types but I need to wait to save up for another 10g tank then cycle it. I'm a dedicated betta keeper and I refuse to keep them in anything less than 10g personally. I did keep Edwin in a 2.5g for a couple weeks while my 10g cycled, but it was just temporary. I didn't want to do a fish-in cycle since he was already so stressed out. I think that doing a fish-in would've killed him.

My bettas came from Craigslist, Kijiji, etc. Two came from the same household, where the 2 little boys had lost interest because they had gotten kittens. They were in tiny little tanks (but with a teeny built in filter at least) with decorations that took up half the space, and sooo many leftover pellets on the floor of the tanks, that I don't understand how they'd managed to stay alive. It was so delightful to see them move into a divided 10 gallon planted tank. 💙💜❤

Still not sure what went wrong, but he was slowly getting sicker everyday. We moved him to a quarantine tank and tried to medicate it and use some aquarium salt. Sadly, he didn't make it. What worries me is getting another Betta and something going wrong again since we still don't know what caused this ones death.

One of the very nice things about bettas being able to breath air is if they jump out of the tank, you have some time to find them and get them back in. Most fish will expire very quickly out of the tank, but I had one that jumped out and I can't even be entirely sure how long he was on the floor, but maybe 10 to 15 minutes, before I saw it and got him back in the tank? That was one year ago and he's still with me now :) Obviously, they jump out of the tank for a reason, so you better figure out what was wrong (in my case, the pH was too high) and fix it ASAP, but at least you have some time to find and recover your betta, unlike most fish.

I had a Betta in a tank near a room heater and I noticed after about 9-10 months the tank heater never came on and the water temperature was fairly consistent between 77 and 80 degrees (occasionally it went a little higher in summer). I took out the aquarium heater and he lived happily for another 3 years. So I think they can live without a heater in the right spot in your house IF you keep an eye on temperature and it's fairly consistent, which we should anyway as aquarium heaters fail all the time, I just had one stick on and kill some fish and I've only had it 6 months.

Believe it or not, one of the first fish which was bred in an community aquarium when I first started in this hobby. In fact two different pairs, blue and red at different times. The feeding was of live black worms and the tank had just one air stone and was not planted!!

I really like the finnage on the males, but the females of some types can have the exact same colors/markings, and also have some gorgeous finnage in their own rights 🤷🏼‍♀️ But, if I understand fin rot correctly, aren't the fluffy male fins more at risk for fin rot since they are "more likely" to get whacked on fake plants? I'm loving watching and catching up with your videos!! They've been *super* helpful since there seems to be a lot more to fishkeeping than I remember from my Black Molly tank back in third grade 😆 So far I've narrowed things down (for my tank; my Hubby is going to need to get his own 😂😍) to one of three tank sizes plus a quarantine tank, one of two single centerpiece fish, at least one of three schooling fish species, and for bottom-dwellers/algae-eaters, I like one of three fish and/or one of two snails 🤔 Thank y'all so much for the great content!!

the only thing I had wrong was the light thing. But since its extremely common in germany to have life planted tanks I just assumed that it was for the plants and the fishes. Even our petstores will have planted tanks... not aquascaped but planted. You dont see a lot of plastic plants on the shelfs, maybe 3 or 4 for the people that prefer them.

Greeting, I have 4 female and 2 male bettas in my aquarium, along with 40 other fish of different species... tetras, sharks, rainbows, hockey pike, angelfish and many others... I put everything periodically in the aquarium and observed how they behave with each other... the only fish that did not tolerate so many species was the serpa... I removed them... all the others get along great including the 2 male bettas... one all white and one all black... real ying yang :-) The possible reason for the good behavior is the many plants, caves and every 45 minutes the wavemaker works for 15 minutes so that everyone can exercise a bit. I am very happy with my aquarium and to sit in front of it and watch it all work together is a fantasy in the water. I send greetings to everyone.

My bedroom is also my reptile/fish room, and is so because it only has one exterior wall and window. It's the warmest room in the entire house. I also happen to have a blackout curtain on that window. So, that room WOULD normally be in total darkness. A couple of the lights are on timers though, and I like to moderate the fish lights myself- for the sake of algae, the health of the fish, and the health of the plants. But there's still a room light I can turn on, and the bearded dragon enclosure in particular throws a lot of ambient light, so my fish are never in total darkness for more than the 10 hour night cycle I have the timers on.

One of the super frustrating things in the fish keeping hobby, and mostly with betta keeping, for me is how no matter the facts and research thrown out there is always one person that has to tell you about this ONE TIME LONG AGO that they proved the facts wrong and therefore will keep trying to do it like that. Things like "One time in the 60s my dad had two male bettas together and I don't remember them fighting so therefore the fact about them fighting is untrue".

You could never hope for a better little fish than that little orange betta. It was the saddest day ever when she passed. I was there when it happened, too - even at the very end, when she realized I was there with her, she used her last little ounce of energy to scoot her way over to be as close to me as possible before laying herself down for the last time :(
