With the same layout and the same engine, the Lexus IS 500 is clearly a spiritual successor to the IS F sport sedan. But how closely related are the cars really? We took a peek underneath each one and got them out on the road together to find out.

I've owned my daily 08 IS F for almost 13 years now. The only mod on it is a 2010 diff....best car I have ever owned.

Same. RCF diff. Catback, steering bushings. It's tight and predictable. Slight understeer on corner entry, rotates degree by degree with throttle input on exit. Such a lovely car to drive.

Question for an ISF owner... I live where its pretty mountainous, snowy, raining, etc... AWD is kind of my go to, had a Is250 and an rx350, both 2WD, then I got a Quattro. So my question is, would an AWD version of an ISF if possible work? Or would it not as far as affecting the "soul" of this car or any of the 5.0 Lexus'?

@@CasualSpec AWD cars understeer - its inherent to the design. I would not buy one. If you live where its that type of terrain/weather buy an SUV / Truck.

As a tech, It’s nice to see you show us and describe the technical changes u see visibly under the car and the affects it has on driving dynamics. That’s why I also like channels like savagegeese. It’s kind of refreshing to watch especially when KZfaq is full of journalists that can only talk about how they feel and read off manufacturers press releases and brochures.

Good comparison between the two models. The shorter wheelbase and the lighter curb weight will make the ISF feel more raw and agile compared to the longer wheelbase IS500.

@@mauriciocontreras3213 that's what a lot of ISF and Lexus fans say about the IS500. It doesn't have the suspension, steering, and cooling components common to past F models. Its doesn't matter to me, I plan to get one as my daily driver.

Loved this! Had a 08 ISF for 5 great faultless years and recently got an 11 facelift in blue. Great to feel the subtle but noticeable differences over the 08. I do like the look of the IS500 but we can’t get it here in the UK so happily I’ll stick with my ISF.

Why are both engines very similar... That's because Lexus engineers did the things at least 90% right IN THE BEGINNING!!! (Actually they could try many many times but only provided GOOD ones for customers)

I got a low mileage '11 isf as daily recently and I am SO happy with it. A perfect mesh of comfort, practicality and theater all be it I barely fit in it and often hit my head getting in haha. On paper I'm sure the is500 would have been the "better" choice but I'm havin a blast

The miata isn't slow and outdated....for its class it's quick and it's actually a new car.....the is500 for it's class is Slow it literally is a refresh of a car that came our almost 10 years ago and uses the same engine from a car thats even older. Its interior has no genuine materials everything is plastic or rubber not even the seats are real leather......and any rwd car with that much power anywhere in it's size or class is faster. It's competition has way less power and is still faster.....its handling is sloppy and it can't compete with the best in class 🤷🏻 it's for the guy that no matter what is obsessed with Lexus and has to have one

@@ftr911drvr I don’t think being obsessed with Lexus is necessarily a bad thing. They’ve ruled the road for the past 20-25 years. The only things the Miata has ruled are high school parking lots, and pick ‘n pull junkyards.

Was a little worried going in because of the 08 choice vs a 11-14, but you guys hit all the major points pretty well! The first ISF was a beast if a little compromised for daily driving. The newer F years and even more so the new evolution with the IS500 help bridge that gap to be able to have your power and enjoy it more days too. Handling and ride quality is always easier to upgrade than reliability and power. Great editing too, short enough and to the point with great exhaust mics

Nice comparison! The ISF is fun. I’m curious how the IS500 feels, but got to drive a new IS350. Felt much slower and heavier compared to my 2011 IS350 that is now supercharged 😆

Excellent vid! May I suggest a better comparison would be between 2011-2014 IS-Fs and the 500? In 2011, the Torsen became standard and, in response to feedback, the suspension compliance was recalibrated (increased), improving both ride comfort and track performance. Yes, I’m keeping my 2011 Mercury Metallic IS-F forever!

Good comparison definitely two different car. The IS-F is a track focus car and the new IS-500 no doubt have more power but it’s a more daily driving focus. Love the V8 and only wish that it could stick around longer.

True F is slower than IS500. Engine and trans is much better than in ISF. Everything in this car is better than ISF.

Toyota filed a patent for a twin turbo V8 this past May. I’m sure this engine is heading towards the F division in the near future. If the twin turbo V8 comes to light, then it will be a true upgrade for current F owners, especially IS F owners. The 5.0 has been around since 2007, the F sport Perfomance division will take the mantle.

@@floggyWM1 “ Masami Ishikawa as the inventor, the patent pertains to an engine equipped with a supercharger; an oil drain pipe for the supercharger; a cylinder block including a first oil passage; and a positive crankcase ventilation separator including a second outlet. Further reading into the patent document reveals that the engine is a V8 with two superchargers (used interchangeably as turbochargers).” It’s the new tech they’re more than likely bringing to the table. Reminds me of what they did with the Tundra. They’re allowing the batteries to give you that instant power like naturally aspirated cars. This gives time for turbos to spool up & take over. It’s Toyotas way of combating turbo lag. Unfortunately, they mentioned the motor is ending up in the LFA 2. Sad for F cars. I was hoping for a detuned version. They’re getting rid of the carbon fiber body panels on the LFA 2 but still! That twin turbo V8 is going to be over 200k to obtain.

4:08 the isf has a weeping waterpump, you can see the pink coolant. Might want to get that fixed. If it's an 08 I believe it has a recall for that in some places. But at the least, there is a service bulletin for it.

It’s not going to be the last Lexus v8. I’ve been hearing that for years now. I agree that the isf is a more badass car. I’m keeping my Lexus RCF btw lol

But it is. Emissions and environmental regulations are relegating it to history. This IS500 was made at the request of Lexus USA. The GS line up was discontinued and with it the GS F. I suspect the RCF is next or at least the 5.0 V8 in it. The LS is already using a twin-turbo V6 so that engine will end up in the RCF next or whichever new F car comes along.

It will be lexuses last na v8. There is a rumor circling Japan about a 4.0v8tt that will be used with all new Fs. Its why when lexus USA requested to make another isf they were denied and settled on is500 f-sport. The 2ur-gse has about 6-7 more years of feasible service before its retired.

i had an is350 , and i'll never understand why lexus gave the 350 a locking rear diff (2 solid black marks if you wanna burnout or just pure launching ability) and didn't give one to the isf so it does one wheel wonders and doesn't launch as well as the 350 because of that.

The people that compare them are the ones that never drove either or just one then say the ISF the ISF it’s like comparing a fox body mustang to todays things change they didn’t bring up all the emissions differences that causes the ISF to feel faster or “better”.

Great video, but Lexie should be ashamed of themselves for not doing LSD in the ISF launch however Caring for their customers they made a big apology with 2010+ models... The 2013+ Ls460 Fsport LSD Fits this car though

ok Chris... idk if that's your ISF. but that dried up pink stuff at 4:06 is leaked and dried up coolant- and that is evidence that you have the "valley plate leak" on your ISF my dude... you plan to get that fixed, right? It's literally the ONLY major issue these engines have over time.

Hey there! Not my F, we borrowed it for the shoot. I did mention the coolant leaking issues at the start of the video and this example did have the leak. The owner does plan to get it fixed, just not super high on the priority list, it is not their daily driver. Thanks for watching!

Help guys! Looking either to buy a GSF, ISF or a IS 500. Points to take in consideration: I have never driven any of them. Budget is not an issue. I don't care about how old is it. This will be my secondary daily car. I drive a 2017 Lexus LX 450 V8 diesel and it will still be my primary daily car. I want the best V8 and sporty feeling. I need to put at least 17 inch wheels with big tires because in my country streets are pretty bad. What would you choose if you guys where me?

Soo, if I downsize from GSF 2016, I’d notice ?? as I drive around city streets during non-rush hours on trips that are never the exact same.

I have an IS F and a GS F. Yes, you'll definitely notice a difference in size.

Doubt it. The IS500 isn’t an F car.

only people on budget will buy ISF. No person with luxury car taste will even look at such a old and dated car and cramped and slow and used/abused car

Wonder if an aftermarket exhaust from an ISF would fit the 500

A reasonable thought, given the similarities of the cars... but no, you could not interchange exhausts. The 500 has a true dual exhaust (two pieces all the way back) and the old F runs a big ol' single until the rear (it splits behind the differential).

Would a nearly new 2020 gsf be a better buy compared to a new is500? I'm in a predicament right now...

seeing how a used car market is right now, you will be over paying for gsf at least 6-10k in this market, while is500 goes for msrp

The engine is from the F, but rest of the car is F-Sport, hence the F-Sport emblem in the engine bay.
