We're back at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway for another episode of Driver Battles, this time featuring Scott Dukeshire and his 2011 BMW E90 M3 going head to head against Willem Drees and his 2009 Lexus IS-F. This isn’t Scott’s first time on Driver Battles. In 2018, he raced his Porsche 996 turbo to victory against an R32 Skyline GT-R. However, his competitor currently holds the naturally-aspirated front-wheel drive record at Chuckwalla in another vehicle. Both know how to get the most out of their cars, but who has the edge?
Starting with Scott, his M3 has seen a few small but impactful modifications. To help the 4.0L V8 engine breathe better is a Macht Schnell intake, along with a Megan Racing muffler. For stopping and cornering, he added Swift lowering springs and Project MU Club racer pads. Of course, it has new wheels and tires, as well, with Volk Racing ZE40 wheels and Nitto NT01 tires.
Willem’s IS-F is overall similarly upgraded to Scott’s M3, but with a few differences thrown in. Instead of an intake and exhaust, the IS-F has been given a Koyorad 48mm radiator to keep its V8 engine cool. His car has also seen upgrades to the suspension and brakes, with KW V3 coilovers, RR Racing lower control arm bushings and Project MW HC+ brake pads. On top of having Advan TC4 wheels, Willem is also running NT01s, so this should be a fair fight. The main difference between the two cars comes down to aero, with Willem having an Alpheyga GT4 carbon lip.
While the horsepower numbers between the cars are similar, with Scott’s M3 having 414 and Willem’s IS-F putting out 416, Willem has a decided advantage in torque, with the IS-F’s 317 lb-ft comparing to the M3’s 295. This one very well might come down to driver skill and cornering ability.

The M3 is actually like a race car , the way it bangs gears and the way the car handles, it’s a screamer and feels amazing. Love them both but I think the M3 has the edge over all . 08-09 IS-Fs were lackluster on the track with its open diff and understeer prone stock suspension setup. While the 10+MY included a Torsen LSD, the 11+MY had the biggest improvement in lap times with its retuned suspension and steering calibration which has been validated on the Car and Driver's Lighting lap times at VIR (9 second improvement) and at other tracks.

@@thomasone1108 heard that from plenty of folks about x,y,z brands. Bottom line is if the drive can't push their car, there is no way they're getting close to advertised performance. The M3 is great in capable hands. In the hands of most average drivers, I have yet to come across an M3 that's actually been able to get past me. Razor sharp handling is great when a driver has razor sharp skills. I haven't come across a razor sharp driver in a while. Last m3 I ran spun on an on ramp getting onto the freeway.

@Arthur WallDo you think every manufacturer has an LSD as part of the package? Look at the C63, E, S, you have to run the vin to make sure they actually are equipped with one. Most brands use brake actuated systems to achieve the same. Pretty much standard in the industry. Merc, Audi, BMW all do the same. Its cost cutting. Then they throw it on as an option. At least they made it standard in the years following.

2009 ISF vs. 2011 M3. Re-match with a 2011 ISF to be fair. ISF got a diff added in 2010+ MY with newer suspension updates. Added diff is a game changer. 2010+ is like 6 seconds faster than 08-09 models at the VIR lightening lap.

2011+ IS'F would have been equal. The LSD diff and a improved camber sway angle improved the Lexus tremendously. They are both great cars to be sure. The amount of affordable mods that are available for both also make the cars very sought after for enthusiasts of all ages. A smart buyer that finds that rare diamond in the world will have a fun car for sure. BMW owners understand and accept it's limitations. Lexus owners will do the same based on slightly different reason's.

I'd rather take my '02 is300 5mt to the track, it's got the factory Torsen and overall is a much more responsive car. Or the M3 of course, no denying it'll be better for setting lap times. As far as a daily thought, the ISF makes for a much more reliable and economical choice for a fun daily!

Also ISF guy’s vanos joke was a little dated, vanos was a major issue on the previous gen E46 M3, the E9x’s S65 is actually one of the most reliable M engines. Only weakpoint was the mentioned rod bearings (do them once and forget about it for peace of mind, or regular oil analysis) and throttle actuators (which the later isn’t even that serious, wont cause engine failure just a low power limp mode).

Great video! I'm surprised nobody mentioned anything about the difference in model years though. If that had been a 2011 ISF against the 2011 M3, the ISF would probably have gone at least 3 second faster due to the Torsen LSD added to the ISF in 2010 and the major suspension changes for 2011. Those two changes made a 7 second (!!!) difference in the 2008 vs 2011 ISF's lap time around VIR. That's why you could see the 2009 ISF in the video had trouble putting power down out of the corners with its open rear diff and less than optimal 2008-2010 ISF suspension. Regardless, this was a fun video to watch and I thoroughly enjoyed it...love both of those cars.

@@matthewnicholas6365 Yes, BMW has a whole lot more experience than Lexus at building that type of car and the E90 was good right from the start. The ISF was their first attempt and had a few flaws, beyond being portly, that hurt track times for the first few model years.

@geejay5653
@geejay5653 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewnicholas6365 The ISF has always just had the base model... never a higher performance variant like BMW did with the M3. Why would an ISF vs M3 GTS head to head make more sense? All I was pointing out from the beginning is that Lexus made a few changes in 2010 and 2011 that fixed some flaws that made it less competitive. Put a 2008 ISF against a 2008 M3 on the track and the M3 is quicker...put a 2011 ISF against a 2011 M3 on the track and it's a toss up.

@@ali_ing069 The S38 is in my eyes the best engine bmw ever built. It is also unobtainium and to me it belongs in an E30 or E36, but we're talking V8 here and bmw can't touch toyota in reliability. The S65 is a cool engine but it's also failure prone and stupid expensive to build. The S62 was better but again expensive to maintain and build. Lexus V8's are plentiful and overengineered. Hell, even a LS swap would make more sense than an S65. I would only consider a S65 swap in an older bmw chassis, again E30 or E36 or something like a 1 series. I am suggesting a lexus swap coz he obviously can't afford an M3 so that swap (or an LS swap) would give him many V8 benefits with much lower maintenance and swap costs to a S65. ISF motor is another story... They're not cheap either but at least they're not built to fail.
