Are you a college student who recently finished your computer science degree or finished your software engineering internship and now is about go into the real word? Well you should know that your pay differs dramatically depending on where you work. Not all software engineering jobs are made equal. If you want to be a programmer, I suggest you to intern then apply for a full time position at the FANG companies.
The top level companies such as Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have starting salaries as high as $150,000 to $200,000! The video will break down the different compensation structures in depth. But basically, your pay will be cash, stock, and bonuses. So that high salary figure is not all money in your pocket. Software engineering is not easy but you definitely get paid well! The hardest part is probably passing your job interview which I'll cover in another video. For now...

Thankyou for validating me 🤣 When I express to people that I'm less "Rah-Rah, follow your dreams" and am more money-motivated, they always get a sour look on their face. You're literally the first person that I've heard say that it's ok to follow the money to provide a comfortable life, and that you don't have to absolutely love your job. I needed that 🙂

I think David's advice is solid, but at the same time my opinion is that when you're young is the best opportunity to take risks because if you fall on your ass you have the rest of your life to fix it. You can't take a chance on starting your own company when you're 45 and have a wife and kids. Just my two cents, but I started working at Amazon after college for the compensation lol

Been at Google for 5 years. Typically, Google gives a "stock refresher" at the beginning of each year (except sometimes not the first year). The refresher vests over the next 4 years, just like the initial stock grant. As you go up levels, the refresher amount goes up too.

No matter how much a software engineer could potentially make, it's a hard sell to convince me that it's worth paying $54K tuition to go to Stanford or MIT to get into a top company. Could you make a video explaining how much more a graduate of Stanford or MIT makes as opposed to a graduate of UCLA or UC Berkeley where the tuition is considerably cheaper?

Tech can be considered a meritocracy more than most industries. Universities only teach you the foundations, the variance of material isn't that wide between ivy league and normal public schools. Ivy league gets you more interviews easier. BUT. Your skills will be apparent and very measurable during the interviews. You will get paid what you're worth regardless of what school you came from.

If you consider the fact that California is extremely expensive in certain places, including Silicon Valley, and that CA has a state income tax, you realize that the compensation of many tech employees isn’t that great. I make about $95k in WA state, and I bet my lifestyle is comparable to a tech employee earning $150k in Silicon Valley. When you adjust for the fact that my area has more reasonable housing prices, and that WA doesn’t have state income tax, I bet my actual monthly cash availability is similar. Of course, these techies are paid well, but you always have to consider other things when you think about the lifestyle that this compensation can really provide.
@mohammada3116

I agree but the salary can only go so high in WA, while as in CA salaries can range from 80k to 500k unlike any other state.

its also easier to get a higher salary in CA so if it ends up being the same lifestyle of someone earning less out of state, then that's fine, these companies in CA pay more knowing that the living costs are high...they aren't paying them more because their nice lol.
