🗒️ Description: Since launching in 2008, the INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE has influenced everything in MEN'S CRICKET (not only INDIAN CRICKET TEAM, but also every other teams too), from the way it is played, to the money invested in it and how the global calendar is structured. In just 15 years it has morphed into a COMMERCIAL MACHINE and is now the WORLD'S SECOND MOST VALUABLE SPORTS LEAGUE after USA'S NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE or NFL. But there was one thing that's been missing? A female equivalent. So, in 2023, a WOMEN'S IPL aka WOMEN'S PREMIER LEAGUE (WPL) was launched, pretty much similar to Men's version, to compete with WBBL or WOMEN'S THE HUNDRED. Five teams participated in the tournament - ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE WOMEN (RCBW), MUMBAI INDIANS WOMEN (MIW), DELHI CAPITALS WOMEN (DCW), UP WARRIORZ & GUJARAT GIANTS. Three of the teams are owned by IPL owners and rest two are by other conglomerates. BCCI, INDIAN CRICKET BOARD laid a stage for the women to showcase their skills, and the tournament even paid the sums women's cricket never heard before. SMRITI MANDHANA became the highest-paid player, followed by ASHLEIGH GARDNER, NATALIE SCIVER-BURNT, SHAFALI VERMA, JEMIMAH RODRIGUES. Other top female cricketers like HARMANPREET KAUR, ELLYSE PERRY, M. KAPP, MEG LANNING, SOPHIE DEVINE, ALYSSA HEALY also got picked up by other teams. Now the question is, HOW MUCH MONEY DOES WOMEN'S PREMIER LEAGUE REALLY MAKE? IS WPL EVEN PROFITABLE IN COUNTRY LIKE INDIA? And, the most important thing, IS THE LEAGUE SUCCESSFUL IN INDIA & IS WPL SUSTAINABLE IN THE LONG RUN? However, only time can tell the answers. For now, THE WOMEN'S PREMIER LEAGUE IS EMPOWERING WOMEN ATHLETES, people are recognising them, the names are be comings popular within every household. Being a Bangalorean, I was pretty disappointed by match tickets being sold for 100rs despite the stadium being full. Then again, it got a lot people talking, even non cricket fans talking about women’s cricket. Brands like Tanishq are milking their collection (Mia) just by being on the merch due to sponsorship and opening new stores in many parts of the city. Pre existing fan bases of older teams definitely helps teams playing in shared franchises. So although it’ll take time for Wpl to become huge, this push in getting best deals with good marketing is making it a win-win situation for Wpl as well as these brands.

If ticket prices were around 500-1000, I don't think, this much amount of people would've attended the matches. Imo, at least until 2030, keep the ticket prices low; then, maybe when you have a proper fanbase, it automatically will reap the rewards.

@@Newage-ed7ernot really I watched RCB vs GG with rs 200 ticket many first timers came to watch women cricket and this was also the first time that I went to watch cricket in chinnaswamy in 32yrs of my life despite stadium being just 8kms from where I live. Keeping ticket prices low is a good thing . See Delhi games less than 40% tickets sold in league matches except Delhi games

I have been following women's cricket since the first time it got proper coverage on Tv that is 2017 wc i was just 10 year old at that time and was so facinated to see women play as a girl I was so proud since then I have been following them and it has been a journey these girls never got facilities nor the recognition nor the money till today Even after RCB won people are giving credit to Virat and everyone else but just not them i really feel the thing when Gautam once said we are not cricket loving national we are a player loving i know even if Smriti wouldn't have been in RCB people would have them also watched it because after 2017 wc there was a boom in women's cricket because Of Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami people started knowing them and then leader's of today like Smriti, Harman and Deepti are appreciated.......I just remembered an absurd question asked to Smriti (Not the only cricketer even Mithali Raj was asked which Men cricketer is her fav to which she also replied just ask the same question to male cricketer as well) that how does it feel like getting 3.4 crore and she just said I have earned this much money previously as well which is true because sorry to correct you but there was women's wc in Aus which was highly ticketed but there were 86000 people and even some matches I have myself paid to watch matches in India they costed around 1500 and it was packed stadium so women can also fill stadium's is what I am saying and can i tell you the reality so many people didn't want to stand in those lines to get 100 rs ticket because it's a damm big line and they could pay online and offline easily.......and just wanna mention one thing I am happy for the fact after fighting for 5 years wpl happened and also sad because the legend's of the game Jhulan di and Mithali di couldn't see it but I am just so grateful for the fact that Smriti got that gaurd of Honour by men's team .... because women have really suffered alot to bring this much audience to see them and I am sure even if RCB or Mumbai or Delhi wasn't there still these girls would have killed it because before all this there was a format like WIPL which was lead by 3 teams .....but at last i would say that finally that 10 year old me who use to see women's cricket but couldn't able to discuss it with anyone because people didn't even knew cricketer's names till today this 18 year old having fights about who is the best Domestic or foreign players it's definitely and achievement and the only thing i wish from people is don't hate these girls remember IPL took 17 years to be as successful as it is today and for Women it's just there 2nd Season and Frankly speaking women's cricket is definitely as fun as Male counterparts and also I just wish the presentation would be better because most of the people like Aakash Chopra and Ravi Shastri don't even know the player is a pacer or a spinner and not even there names properly it is a bare minimum because I am not asking them to be aware about stats and all but atleast this much is needed! I have written so much now if you have completed reading than thank you!

Women's cricket will get much bigger, the change in perception may take some time because, team sports predominantly were for men only for decades. And, all these people, who are spreading hate, I think they just form their opinions around social media. And, men's sports are women's ones are definitely different, why should they even be compared? Why can it not be a separate entity? I don't understand. And, I also do think, there should be a reform around commentary panel. It's not only about awareness, they are just too lazy to do some research beforehand, even in men's cricket too.

It's already a big success and will only go massive from here. When you see your local shop uncle watching the WPL in his small tv set and more conversation happening among general masses, you know it's already creating an impact. The commercials already look good and will only become better.

I just read a few comments but let me tell you one thing Cricket is not a pace game that's why Umran malik in not in indian team no offence to him but he is the fastest in men's cricket that's why i am comparing and women have been to most play off Finals then men i know Men and Women are not equal but atleast give cerebral equality to them it's ain't justify comparison between Men and women and people saying match winner's as someone like me who has seen women's cricket since 8 years now can mention atleast 50 players who can play for India in future and i know Women have not won the Cup yet but definitely they would in upcoming year's and let me tell you after Harman we have a brand like Smriti who could make it more popular and players like Deepti and Smriti could lead as potential Captain and Vice Captain who are just 26 years old can make us win many wc's we have young blood like Shefali, Shreyanka, Titas, Richa,Shweta,Parshavi,Bharti and many more the list goes on and on and it would take time but I am sure it will run for long time as well!

Sorry he is clueless and leak runs. There was one pakistani bowler who was named muhammed samy. he try to bowl fast and leak runs. Same thing here. Starc got 25 crore for being fast and accurate. Only mandus say what you said. accurate fast bowlers are premium. 11 crore for aljazrri joseph but he is trash. Fast is not everything. Accuracy is key. So he will not picked again.

It is sucessful , every sports is a business model it is an investment if u invest obviously u will expect good returns , nothing wrong in that , it is necessary for the growth of womens game similiarly like men , it also contributes to our economy plus provides opportunities for young girls in cricketing career, its only 2 nd season n the response frm audeince for womens game was already overwhelming , it has good viewership on ground plus on ott platform , very necessary for the growth of womens game in international arena , every passing season it will gain more traction n fans engagement, world class players , high level skill n close matches , i throughly enjoyed this whole seson including the final , we need to support our girls n our domestic tournament .

If they can make the female cricketers famous through this there is a huge profit for the brands as everyone knows that female consumers are way more loyal than male consumers. Its actually beneficial for the brand. There are way more types of things used by women than men especially cosmetics, bodycare and jewellery.

Firstly, not everyone would want to go stadium for a newly formed female's league; whereas, digital viewership is impeccable. Secondly, around 400k attendance for 22 games with 23-30k for K/O matches is not a bad number for a women's sport.

@@ishansharma1450 here talk is about the pace of the game and how they drop simple dolly catches though Australia won women's cricket and football looks silly infront of men's cricket and football tennis and badminton is ok you don't see that much of difference in pace or skills but football and cricket they look silly and slow accept the fact here no one is biased but telling the truth and fact wpl tickets were priced at 100rs in Bengaluru Delhi if they were priced like men's cricket rate starting from 800-5000 80% of stadium would be empty and BCCI and men are encouraging them but I am just speaking about the game pace and there sluggish fielding .

This is not the north/south accent. It's the eastern(bengal) accent. Maybe you are unfamiliar with it.

Its a failure 😂. Idnia still didn't find any batter. Its been 10 yrs and india is still playing with same 4 batters. Harmanpreet will retire in next 4 yrs. In all women teams 3 batters are from foreign. Cuz india dont have any batters and franchise don't give chances to indian batters

The loser Kolhi is putting himself of the winning WPL RBC. For 15 or 16 since the IPL started with good players in the team they couldn’t win an IPL. Mandanna the captain is also a loser because she over payed and because of Perry and a few other players they win. Perry should call for more money than Mandanna or move to another team like what Hardik did.
