The Russian TT30 and TT33 were semi-automatic pistols developed to replace the old Model 1895 Nagant revolver. They were designed by Fedor Tokarev and were in production from 1930-1955. The 7.62x25mm Tokarev cartridge is very similar to the 7.63x25mm Mauser aka 30 Mauser, but has a higher muzzle velocity. The muzzle velocity for an 85 gr 7.62 Tok projectile is about 1,630 fps.
The M57 is a historically similar Yugo version of the TT-33. The difference is mainly in the magazine well, which is longer.
In this video we test out a Yugoslavian M57 against some one inch pine wood blocks. This measures penetration without the need for ballistics gel. The bullet is also easily recoverable.
The original video is here

The question is which loading was used. 7.62x25 is a hot rod but there once was some old Bulgarian ammo that was really hot. About 1600 FPS. Im guessing it was really intended for SMGs. But yes, famous for drilling deep and shooting flat.

It’s not supposed to fire hot ppsh rounds. The shooting with ppsh rounds potentially could damage the barrel of tt pistol because of very high energy(0.8 grams of explosives in ppsh rounds vs 0.5 grams in standard tt rounds)

The Tokarev and its 7.62x25 cartridge are actually a really good weapon system considering when it was first produced. It’s like an early .357 Sig lol. Even by today’s standards the caliber still offers good ballistics, especially when you find the right (hot) ammo that really pushes the velocity.
