I was actually a bit disappointed about this video. Reading the title, I thought it was going to talk about using protein powder on top of regular meals, not completely replacing them. If I only eat apples, I won't live long either.

Your last statement did not tie into what the video was about. No where in the video did it say to not consume or “replace” protein powders whatsoever. I think the main take away was to be cognizant of how much you are consuming it on top of a diet of whole foods. In addition, no one should replace an entire group of food (e.g. plant or animal proteins) with protein powders. Too much of something, in this case protein, can have consequences on your body.

Watching this video with my 7 year old son, and we were talking about how this is an example of why it's important to eat a variety of foods in order to optimize one's health... I think that would be a great topic for a video. Like, a discussion of what would happen to the body if you only at one thing forever (and use a few examples of different foods, even "healthy" ones).

Apparently you can survive on only potatoes, although I'd like to see the math and science behind why that's possible. Personal experience: At the age of 25, I was taking protein powder once or twice a day on my workout days, with the combination of high protein and low carbs diet, I never felt this aesthetically pleasing. I did a routine blood/urine test checking my kidney functions, my family physician was alarmed by the high creatinine level. Advised to stopped taking the protein powder and be on a less protein aggressive diet, three weeks later, she was satisfied with the results. Love your kidneys, take protein powders responsibly.

I love your videos so much!! I actually shared a couple of them with my recovery group -- the ones about alcohol and weed. On this subject, I was a personal trainer for nine years, and I also competed in bodybuilding. This video makes me cringe when I think of the crazy amounts of protein powder I used to consume, and even more so, the fact that I used to recommend it so much to my clients. Our gym required us to sell supplements, and I always resisted a lot of that, but thought of protein powders as innocuous. Not so much!

@shrivardhann2924 2 жыл бұрын
That's awesome. So, since you are a personal trainer, here's a question for you: do you still consume/ask your clients to take protein powder on a regular basis? I am really confused because I was a skinny guy and inclusion of protein powder did help building muscles for me. Of course, it wasn't just protein powder. I have stopped gym for the last three months and I am confused if I should continue taking more beginner's protein.

@@shrivardhann2924 Hi Shri! I am no longer a trainer and haven't been for a number of years. I don't think protein supplementation is inherently bad, but as this video states, it can really cause problems if one takes in too much. Not to mention, a lot of these proteins are unregulated and therefore potentially harmful. I would do my due diligence in researching products, and default as much as possible to whole-food sources of protein. Many of us falsely believe that we need more protein than we actually do. This speaks to one reason I left the industry ... it's really tough to say that I have any answers myself ... there's SO much conflicting information out there and it makes my head explode. Real question... If I had to ask you in person about all of these subjects that you research and make videos about.. How much would you be able to recall and talk about in depth? I'm asking because I can learn things and I immediately forget all of the details but with things I research myself I obviously have a much better understanding but still can't remember the most intricate details even if I tried

On that line of thought, i'd tell you that active engagement is a key component for learning. Thus doing research solidify the information more into your brain. But here's a catch 22 .., that is only information - Raw information ) - it absloutely help you combine ideas and think broadly but it's illusive. I liked this video among the least out of most ASAP Science videos because I find the thumbnail and video title misleading. The question they dive into isn't "How bad is protein powder?" (which is what I was actually wondering, how unhealthy it is to use in moderation) or even "How Much Protein Powder Will Kill You?" which is also an interesting, but different question. No, the subject of this video is, "What would happen if you eat EXCLUSIVELY PROTEIN POWDER AND NOTHING ELSE" which I find really misleading. Basically has very little to do with the toxicity of protein powder or how unhealthy it is to use in excess (along with other foods). I have a lot of respect for ASAP Science so it was disheartening to see them use such clickbait-y/"bait-n-switch" tactics like these. If the title was "What would happen to your body if you only ate protein powder?" then I would have no problem with the congruity of the video title and the subject matter.

Great Video! Have you ever heard of these shakes that are meant to replace a normal meal? Here in Germany the brand "yfood" sells them under the name "this is food". They are exactly 500 calories per shake and claim to have all the nutrients of a normal meal. They are different from the shakes that are meant to help with weight loss (Almased in Germany) which are lower in calories and go along with a strict diet (i think you are supposed to only drink these the first few days and then substitude two and eventually one meal per day with them, but dont quote me on that). I'd be very interested in the science behind that or whether they really work/are as healthy as they claim. Best wishes

I came across an article just the other day saying that the plant based ones are generally the ones that test higher in the heavy metals. I think - this is just a guess because I didn't go looking for the research - that it might be because plants take up metals from soils; I have a nickel allergy and have to eat the low nickel diet which eliminates whole categories of plants just because of how much nickel they uptake from the soil, so that's why I figure that.

I always mix my protein with 3% organic milk, which a single glass of milk has half the vitamins and minerals you need for the day! So, you can just drink protein every day and it be the only thing you drink as long as you mix it with REAL 3% milk (not the fake nut juice everyone is drinking nowadays). Also, adding in a multivitamin would take care of any micro nutrients you may need.

Protein intake of 0.8 g/kg is the minimum for general healthy organ function. For those of you that are trying to build muscle, 2-2.5 g/kg lean body mass, spread into 4 different meals (or shakes) throughout the day is optimal for maximal muscle protein synthesis and growth of skeletal muscle. And so long as you are getting adequate micronutrient intake, whey protein is an excellent protein source, especially considering the high lysine content.

You'd probably still have the same problems though, except your kidneys would probably last longer because plant protein isn't as hard on them. The osteoporosis problem could be avoided by choosing a powder with added vitamins/minerals. The problem with contaminants is there with vegan protein too though bc protein powder is legally classed as a supplement and thus isn't subject to the same regulations as food, an unfortunate loophole in the U.S. system (and in most countries as well).

I started creatine loading 2 months ago and I saw immediate results. Gravity Transformation has a great video that shows actual studies on how to properly cycle on and off and how to properly creatine load. Anyone serious about exercising and making gains needs to see that video. Exercising is important but your diet is more important no doubt. If you're not eating right, you will plateau. Great video and I love the narration, but I gotta ask, were you perhaps (a teeny tiny bit) high while filming this?
