How Much Risk Is the Sun to Our Way of Life? | Coronal Mass Ejections

Күн бұрынMankind is playing a dicey game with our closest star. The Sun could cripple society in an instant, and we are not prepared to stop it. We are used to geomagnetic and solar storms caused by CMEs, or coronal mass ejections, but what if the most powerful CME on record was to hit Earth tomorrow?
This video was made for my final major project for uni. I am very proud with how it turned out, but I would love to hear your thoughts about it too! I made it with a TV audience in mind, hence why it is almost half an hour long. It was also my most difficult and time consuming project that I have produced for this channel.

This is an astonishing video! Well done. It's actually kind of terrifying to think how reliant we are on technology and electricity to survive day to day and how unprepared we are for such a disastrous event that we have no way of predicting. Governments need to stop arguing over who is responsible for what and just get to upgrading everything so we don't fall back into the medieval times if something like the carrington event or bigger were to happen. Anyway, i hope you get a fantastic grade for this. Good luck!

I can't speak directly first hand, but this conversation has come up several times as my family has been in the electrical trade in the US for 3 generations, and my father works for San Diego Gas & Electric currently, while also having spent several years working on electrical substation construction projects. While everything you said was well put and true, the lack of Federal organization and single source accountability has not stopped updates to the grid. Most major parts of the US grid have infrastructure in place for remote control and protection if needed. These updates, and their specific hardware implementation are not publicized for security reasons or so I've been told. Publicizing the ability to shut down substations even if it is via an extranet is just begging for problems and someone to attempt to exploit the most vulnerable aspect of every system, -people. One thing's for sure, if such an event happened Los Angeles is the last place I want to be. It would be an interesting event though. Even if recovery was somewhat peaceful, the entire 'civilized' world would inevitably go into martial law. After an extended period in power I imagine more than a bit of political instability would emerge on the other side forever changing the geopolitical map. -Jake

Pavel Sadowsky No. The danger is only across long lines that span great distance. The induced magnetic field would be a problem at large scales not on small scales. Things like your phone and small appliances would be fine. The magnetic field in such an event is still on a huge scale. Think of the small stuff kinda like putting motor from a quad copter in the middle of a gigantic hydro turbine's field inside a large dam. The gigantic turbine is not going to have any meaningful effect on the tiny toy motor. However if you take that toy motor apart and unwind the copper wire wound around it's core. Then you take that tiny little copper wire and wind it around the core of the turbine a few times, you'll see a very very big difference. When you start inducing a magnetic field across the surface of the Earth, our tiny wires that stretch across long distances become a problem. Everything else on our local scale is not affected unless it is directly connected to the larger long distance wires crossing the globe. Electrical Sub Stations are the switches that disconnect all different parts of the grid. If an event is eminent, the electric companies are capable of disconnecting power at all of these sub stations. That alone would kill many people that are on life support in places without emergency backup power. If/when it becomes necessary to disconnect power to the grid like this, it will be a very very big deal for many industrial sites and emergency care. There are many many specialty systems that the power company is not supposed to disconnect. It would take a very very eminent threat to cause them to prioritize actions based on the potential threat to the grid over the inevitable lawsuits that will cost them tens of millions of dollars or more. -Jake

Private energy companies do have a conflict of interest problem in maintaining infrastructure. PG&E here in North Bay Area, CA, didn't to replace infrastructure and instead chose to run it to failure, to save money apparently. And we have no backup stations, that is, there is no evidence of them since we do lose power for extended periods. And would it matter if we did when the infrastructure is old and faulty anyway? Granted we have a fire hazard problem here, but if PG&E were more diligent and followed industry standards on upgrades maybe we wouldn't have to go several days without power because having it running is too much of a fire risk. Kind of a tangent but I have to be skeptical about secret power grid backup plans, at least from my experience where I am. That said, it's a good idea for everyone to have as best a plan as they can as individuals. Probably wouldn't hurt to politically pursue a proper plan for mass power outage also. I don't trust private energy companies to do it on their own.

Extremely important topic, but ignored by most. Ridiculous to see people get insurance for the case they lose their travel baggage, but society has no backup plan for this flavor of global doom.

It doesn't seem to last very long though. Not really much we could do about it either. To most people this sort of stuff is something you try to take on the chin when it comes and do the bext you can with, sort of like unexpected flooding. Not really sure what you think we should do about something this powerful other than return to the stone age preemptively.

I must say that this is one of the most terrifying videos I’ve ever seen. This is a superlative wake-up call that must be disseminated worldwide. I’m stunned that more people are not talking about this. But I am optimistic that humanity will take the necessary actions before the next Carrington event. Thankfully the sun is expected to be exceptionally inactive in the next few decades which will make such CMEs far less probable. But the menace is still terrifying.Superb work Alex!

I take comfort in the fact that we're still here after a billion years. If the sun could kill us with CMEs it would probably have happened a very long time ago.

If this does happen and Earth looses all of it's electricity, we will have the most beautiful sky we have ever seen in over a hundred years. No light pollution, aurora across the whole planet. One heck of a way to die.

In time, you will help them accomplish wonders." Jor-El I prefer modern fiction over millenia old fictions that justify immoral behavior in any way. It's proof that they're made by humans and not divine. Just the imaginative greedy, self absorbed monkeys we are writing fiction for a long time to make ourselves seem. Ultra special. Normal people understand it's not real, keep cultural, ignore the religious aspects, and don't do horrible acts in defense of it. Might as well Plus, prophecy is always some self absorbed asshat in the past rambling ideas, then people who believe the nonsense wait eagerly to draw circles around arrows to pretend they predicted where it would land. It's as delusional as the people who think the Bible has a secret code says when the world will end. The world and humanity would be such a better place and people if organized religion just died out. *sigh* But alas, we're a stupid ape species.

I would have included the impending pole shift and ebbing of the earth's magnetic field as compounding the problem. In the vernacular of Star Trek, earth's shields will be down.

The immediate problem is not a matter of the earth's atmosphere being stripped. It is a matter of high energy particles striking the planetary surface having not been deterred by a strong magnetic field, which normally routes them around the planet or to the poles (auroras). It is a threat to all biology (DNA) as far as life is concerned. Bear in mind, as these undeterred high energy particles strike the molecules in earth's atmosphere, they also create deleterious and harmful daughter particles that will reach the surface and do harm also.

I'm more worried not about going back to the middle ages, we got the know-how to rebuild, but about all the nuclear power plants over the world not being able to maintain reactor balance. You know what would prevent all geomagnetic storms from fatally damaging our power grid? Underground, insulated, transmission lines. Problem solved. It is mind numbingly idiotic that Puerto Rico didn't use this time to replace most or all of their damaged grid with subterranean lines. Immune to hurricanes and geomagnetic storms.

The AEE, (Autoridad de Energia Electrica) the state owned power company has had many cut backs and work force reduction in the last few years, also with the goverment facing further economic recession, there simply wasnt the man power or financial support to upgrade the power grid and power stations. That simply, also with the PROMESA fiscal control board imposing further osterity measures on the Island make it next to impossible to try and upgrade the power grid.

@BRAVOZULU DWEST boathouse as for that, the current situation on Puerto Rico is the result of the poor decisions made both by the US gov. and the local gov. Yes, we have served as a naval base for the US, also as a test range for napalm and Agent Orange during Vietnam, the Naval test range in Vieques, that after leaving, never cleaned up and the island has the highest rates of cances on the entire territory. The US has extracted more from PR that PR has from the US. Now even more, with the banks in wallstreet holding most of the Island's debt, they wont let it go any time soon till every last cent is squeezed out.

it would still be vulnerable to storms as they cause landslides and the cost to install and maintain underground lines is higher than above ground

Wait a min., underground lines are safe from wind, but induction can reach them just as well. The problem is consolidation of electrical power production in a few big stations instead of many smaller ones. But, of course, that would be cost ineffective...
