Based on the range of numbers given for average annual salary in Shanghai (about $45k USD, but different sources ranged from $21k to $110k), it looks like most of your respondents had in mind an amount equal to about 1-2 years' average salary for savings. The low was about 8 months' average salary, and the high was 3 years' average salary. This may reflect each individual's specific salary, and they were basing it off of 1 year of their own salary. In the US, basic advice for savings is to have 3-6 months' expenses. Since many Americans don't save, they basically spend their entire salary. For shorthand, we can say they should save 3-6 months' salary. The average in the US is somewhere between $50k-70k, depending on info source. So we SHOULD have $13k-35k in savings (though 3 months is a really tight safety margin in case of employment/economic hardship or personal emergency -- one medical emergency in the US could wipe out your savings), but as you pointed out in your intro, actual savings are about $11k on average for people aged 35 and under. HOWEVER, due to wealth inequality, the MEDIAN savings for 35 and under is only $3500. This is due to the wealthiest 0.1%, 1%, and 10% saving significantly more than $11k, which pulls the average up higher than the median. Interesting that Chinese cultural values specifically regarding savings are more conservative by a factor of at least 2. I recently found out that China's wealth distribution is very similar to the US, being only a few percentage points less unequal. This is probably reflected in savings distributions in similar ways.

I don't think $45k is average. That would be around 31K RMB. I am looking at zhaopin. There are jobs which pays 30K like IT and banking with 5-10 years of experience. Seems 30K is upper boundary. Manager role in pharmaceutical company: up to 50K RMB. They have progressive taxes, so I think at 50K income tax rate will be 35%. Shanghai is cheap and usually Asian companies pay or compensate apartment costs. So, biggest part of salary goes to savings!

Hi Kaho, nice topic. I'm saving but haven't reached 86K USD ...yet. Your interview style is laid back and intuitive...very nice. I am subscribed and I've watched all of your videos. Great job.💯

Very nice, I love how they have a figure in mind but some don't save up regardless :) I save up, but I'm far away from the amounts in this video. Living in Europe.

At age 30, you should borrow as much as your credit allow and invest in property (or equivalent). Make sure you also have sufficient savings to meet any unforeseen short term cash flow issues.

It’s pointless having that saved up. You’d be better off getting a deposit together and having a home and invested in certain markets than having that much lying around. Inflation will destroy it.

How much they save is not important in their mind. This generation is the richest, as whatever their grandparents(on both sides) left belong to them. They are the single heir of three families. So, they totally have no concern, even without a job.
