I learned this quickly. First client couldn’t afford me and then tried to give me some of their services to offset the costs. While promising referrals that never came. Bad experience and happy it was the first client and I never worked for that little pay again.

Not a design freelance per se, but I've just started my first business on Etsy recently after some sporadic years of taking money for my expertise as small as $5 for something I do for many hours. The Futur videos have helped me realise my worth (I've been dabbling in the practice for 10 years) and priced myself slightly higher than my competitors in Etsy. And I feel good about it. Thank you, The Futur. I'm saving up for your courses!! Also the bootcamp!! I'm gonna learn, unlearn, and relearn a lot from you.

Every time I watch video from "thefutur" I get pumped up. I tell myself, I can do this, I can start charging more. Client: So Pradeep, how much do you charge for a logo. Me: $50 😢😢😢😢😢 ( why god whyyyyyyyyyy ) I'm sorry Chris. You and your team are putting great amount of effort and I am not executing in a right way. But, I will fight with myself for myself.

That is the purpose of these videos - change your mindset. Change that mindset. To tell you honestly, I just started freelancing for 6 months but seeing 'thefutur' videos made me realize how much we should be charging. And now I am charging $300-$400 per project (of course backed up by skills). Now I tell you this, clients can sense your confidence and that is the reason why they can negotiate. Skills can be honed and developed by practicing but attitude cannot. Change that mindset. Start from there and everything else will follow. I promise you, though it's hard you will eventually learn it.

@@no-one-someone-1 maybe you shouldn't think to charge the 500% more. Just charge 10-15 $ more. Whenever you'll feel comfortable with the new price you're asking, increase again. After you reach 100 $ you could try steps of + $50. I think you'll feel enough confident this way. Besides, if you don't find works in your country, try platforms like 99design or Upwork, Freelancer and so on. There you'll find jobs opened by western firms that will pay at least 200$ for a logo.

So I had a situation with a skivvy agent that I worked with on a freelance project. It was an info graphic for the web. I was recommended this job and wasn't too familiar with the marketing consultancy hiring, but I knew that they were small enough to be a dog kennel. The founder, his wife, a social media person, and maybe a 3rd cousin running the place. It never occurred to me that they could have any big clients at all except for local mom and pop shops. I was taught to charge by scope. Meaning, the larger the client, the bigger the budget. So a small web banner for ABC Furniture on Main St. wouldn't equate the same pricing for Verizon Inc. The problem was that the big oaf at this agency wouldn't divulge the client name, much less the budget of their project. I didn't know if this project was a small part of a larger million dollar marketing campaign or a three figure one-off. I got absolutely the bare minimum info, the MVP. I had no idea where my pricing would fit within the scope of this mystery client's budget. The client turned out to be not very well known, but not very small either. I could have easily charged 5x's what I did and it wouldn't have dented the client. NDA's and client privacy are very common when dealing with agency's hiring non staff freelancers. What would be a good line of questioning for a freelancer trying to get a better sense of the budget in order to gain as much info as possible and avoid blind pricing?
@quexdesign9231
@quexdesign9231 4 жыл бұрын
I would say propose to them the 5x price and see what their reaction is, and if they are negative then just slowly back down the price until they are ready to settle.

This was great! The amount of value I've gotten from this channel is truly priceless. What would you suggest on charging when you're just starting out when the only projects you've worked on so far have been for friends and family? Is there a baseline for what someone should be charging for logos or posters or brand identity systems with very little experience? Or is it better to start with flat-rate pricing?
@thefutur
@thefutur 4 жыл бұрын
I prefer flat fee pricing. if you're just starting out, it's better that you not overprice yourself and not deliver. charge what you think is fair. depending on the quality of work you produce and the delight of your client, you can always ask for more next time. you can also say, "I'm new in the field and want to price this competitively. How much are you willing to invest in this project?" then let them say it. sometimes, they'll say a number much higher than yours.
