Just to be 100% clear before the hate comments start pouring in. I’m definitely against Spotify appealing the recent CRB outcome, but the only thing I can do in the meantime as an independent musician is do adapt to the situation. I think it’s so important that musicians keep fighting for better streaming royalty rates overall, but I do have a rent to pay.
@charlestrudel8308
@charlestrudel8308 4 жыл бұрын
the royalty rate is not as important as this in fact: You know why spotify is bad, its because even if I only listen to you on spotify, my ten dollar a month wont go to you, it will go to whatever other people have listen more... My 10$ should go directly toward what i listen to, even if i listen 3h in my month.... of course, 10$ minus cut and share but still, the rest to you... Example, if I dont listen to Justin Bieber in my month, why some of my 10$ goes to him because lots of people listen to him...

@@charlestrudel8308 Bandcamp has a better reputation for supporting artists in several ways such as giving artists control on how much consumers pay. I'm curious how much artists make from Spotify vs Bandcamp in practical terms.
@charlestrudel8308
@charlestrudel8308 3 жыл бұрын
@@elwyn5150 for sure, the smaller bands that do receive some sales from bandcamp receive 90% of the money spent. compare that to the very small number of listen / total number of listen to everything on spotify, and any band that have one sale of an album on bandcamp each two months is probably making more money there than 6 six months on spotify, spotify at least gives them some visibility i guess...

I didn't pay much attention to it, but recently I decided to monitor my streams more closely through OneRPM and came to notice I have almost 2 million streams summing up all the platforms since I uploaded my music - 1.6M being on a particular song. Now, I don't understand why my revenue is of like 30 dollars. Am I reading something wrong? Is there an explanation to this?

First of all, I apologize for my dumb joke on Facebook about making 17 cents. I was really just being silly, but of course even silly comments are usually based on some sort of impression of the truth. :-) That said, my perspective is perhaps interesting because I'm one of those musicians whose career spans the time when there were lots of healthy record companies manufacturing physical copies of recordings, all the way through the tragedy of Napster and all the way to the present streaming paradigm. In every case, all through my career, it has felt like everyone else was making a much larger amount of the total money than I ever saw as the artist...or, in the case of file "sharing" (a nice word that really means theft) even my fans were deciding that my music was something they wanted but would rather just take from me rather than pay for. That was an especially difficult pill to swallow, as I felt virtually unsupported by any aspect of the "industry," including the end consumer, whom I thought liked me! It seemed like truly dark days were ahead. At least now we have graduated to the streaming model where, even though the royalties per stream seem microscopic, I see as a form of radio-on-demand. As with radio, any royalties that get paid to the artist through broadcast, when analyzed in terms of royalty per individual listener, seem infinitesimally small. But still, at least then apples are being compared to apples and not cumquats. It helped me to imagine how many people would hear one of my songs when one was played, for example, on Canada's public broadcaster, the CBC. If I'm lucky, maybe a million people would hear it all at once and then 9 months later I'd see a blip on my cheque from SOCAN (Canada's Performing Rights Society) for a number of dollars, like maybe $10 or so. So, the royalty per listener (very crudely calculated here) would be in the fractions of a cent per person, much like streaming on platforms like Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, etc. So, the radio-on-demand idea sticks. Has streaming replaced CD sales? To a large extent, absolutely. I myself rarely buy discs anymore, except for the occasional indulgence and then I tend to buy a recording on LP, if it's available (I'm one of those cool kids who never got rid of his turntable. Hehe). If not, I'll try to support the artist by buying a CD or another piece of merchandise, because as a touring artist myself I understand how important it is to have various income streams. In the end, my own personal digital royalties have been climbing steadily and have almost reached the point where they help offset the loss of income from lack of hard sales. Another upside? I can record an album in my own studio whenever I like and release it as singles, EPs, full-length albums, double albums, triple albums...whatever. No manufacturing costs! They can be up for sale on Bandcamp or CDBaby the same day, and on all the streaming services within days, available to anyone with an internet connection. Is it an easy way to get rich? Nope. Was the music path ever an easy way to get rich for almost 100% of musicians? Also nope. Keep up the good music, Casper, and more power to you.

Thanks for this Casper. I'd like to add something -- how much are the streaming services earning per play? I pay about US$7.70 per month for my Tidal service. Let's assume I listen 30 days per month, 3 hours per day, and 20 songs per hour -- they are making $7.70/30/3/20 = $0.0042 per song. So if they are paying artists $0.0033 per song that's pretty fair. Mark me surprised!

Question... Did getting the streams in such a short amount of time get you that amount? I've gotten roughly 120,000 streams in since July roughly 5-6 months and I've only earned about 249.00. I'm trying to get these numbers and times down, I figure I need needed about 500,000 streams in that length of time and I probably could have doubled it. I gotta hustle new streams faster...

D'Artagnan Reigns do you mind sharing your way that you promoted your song bro? i’ve tried instagram ads, youtube ads, paid instagram post promo & nothing really sticks. If you could jus tell me the thing that worked the best for you i’d very much appreciate that man. If you do thank you so much 🙏🏻

@@Dreydon Personally Instagram and FB ads work the best for me, it's kind of a forced situation as the algorithm sort of forces you to rely solely on ads because the organic reach is hindered to 15% on FB/Instagram. I've found consistency is the best catalyst, and not trying to spread your ad dollars too thin. If I'm only spending say 20-30$ on an ad, I focus on 3-4 States or maybe a few key cities in say 3 States. If I am not traveling I keep the ads in States near me, this way if I want to perform I have a close fanbase for it. I try to keep an ad going for atleast 2 weeks a month, and I am patient with results because they won't just come falling in feel me?

@@Dreydon You're very welcome my friend, in truth it's all the ads can take weeks and months before they start yielding anything sometimes. It's also a lot harder for music than say products. Good luck to you and keep in touch!

So Around $4000 per year. Av annual Minimum wage USA : $15,000. Even propping up earning with gigging and merch ...a living is fairly tough to make year on year for the average musician...especiallly when that 4k is split between a band... the deal between labels and spotify sewed it up for musicians...who now willingly lap up the scraps from the feast.

I release through CDbaby, and they have a service that collects mechanical royalties for you called PRO. I don't know how it works with other aggregators, Google might by your friend on this one.

You have to be realistic. Your music is only a tiny amount of a vast online catalogue. Most people use spotify to play their favourite songs and artists, most of them are well known or well established. It's always been very hard for new musicians to break through. Nobody is going to magically discover you. Most people will not even know you exist. The simple fact is you have to work very very hard and market yourself in multiple ways. You have to think of good ways to draw people in. If you are a bedroom musician not playing live, you will remain a bedroom musician. What I'm saying is: by all means make your own music but don't expect the world to fall at your feet. There is no substitute for hard work and determination.
