One of the most frequent question I hear and I get from students is 'How much time should I practice?' Let's understand why practicing 10 hours a day is not the solution and the scientific explanation of why there's a specific amount of time that we can practice each day to really improve!

Short story: I had to record my first album in studio and I was worried because I had some problems with swivel (lack of control). I started getting anxious so I practiced at least 3 hours a day only on swivel and balance. The result: After a month overthinking the technique and I totally forgot it. Felt like I never played it before and I had problems getting to 200bpm... After recording (I actually played really bad on fast parts...) I stayed away from drum for around 3 weeks and when I came back, I was playing perfectly at 230bpm... Sometimes the muscles and the brain need rest. We are not machines (even if James actually plays like a machine :S)

Daniele Lewis yea. Muscles will build with rest. If you keep doing it every day. The muscles never really have rest so they don’t build. But that’s awesome tho. I’m currently only at 140BPM. Can’t wait to be at 200

It's the same method as lifting weight, you get stronger and muscles develop during the resting period.

I have researched how it is that we learn something. The first and most important thing is to understand the difference between learning a thing, and becoming faster at that thing. When you are learning a pattern for instance, you are developing a neural pathway between your brain and your muscles. This is the circuit so it must be done perfectly, which means slowly and exactly. Once the circuit is learned then we can develop speed. Play the pattern gradually increasing speed, but never allow sloppiness to creep in. Stop and go back to where you can still play it perfectly. Just keep in mind that once you lose control and errors creep in, you are actually practicing and reinforcing playing it wrong. You will get better at playing it incorrectly. The longer you play slow, the sooner you will play fast. Try this and you may see amazing improvement in your technique and speed. Just remember, never practice doing it wrong, because once it goes from your short term memory (If you don’t practice again what you are learning within 48 hours you lose 75%) to your long term memory it is very difficult to unlearn it and correct it.

That's exact, if you constantly repeat mistakes, they will become bad habits. The problem in what you say is that, in drums, when we speed up or slow down things we use different muscles and part of the body. So, for instance, if you learn something slowly, you most likely will use big arms and legs muscles motions, because the speed requires those parts, then, when you speed that up to a certain point, we need to shift the control to smaller and faster muscles, like wrist and ankles, for example, and in that moment, we are playing the same thing, but using completely different parts of the body, so that's when problems usually kick in. Does it make sense? That's why the important thing is not how fast or slow you learn something, but is to build comfort zones in which everything works, so if you need to play something that has to be played with ankles and wrists, because of its speed, it will be useless to learn it very slow using arms and legs motions. Your case works, instead, to learn the sequences of motions or notes that has to be played, so either to memorize or coordinate something, in that case yes, it's easier and better to learn it slowly first and then speed it up.

James Payne Yes that’s good advice. I never thought of it that way I will definitely implement that in my practice. When I was talking about playing slow and correctly was in reference to building the neural pathways or muscle memory. I definitely know that we all have different abilities, and a good memory is essential to learning arrangements and patterns etc. Thanks for the advice James.

I did spend several hours when I first started. Thinking that it would help me become a better drummer. But like you said, James. In the end, I always ended up frustrated with my lack of results. And at times felt discouraged to come back to the kit. I later learned that focus training and dividing my practices to target specific areas is key. I got more results and satisfaction from practicing 2 hours, focusing on specific areas. Than the 5 or 6 invested in the begging.

You have very good insights and comments, James! I also think that drumming is a form of meditation, a meditation for life. The same goes for extreme metal albums because listening to such deep music also requires attention and concentration. This is exactly what I love about extreme metal music and drumming as well, because these activities make a person spiritual. Thank you so much for the videos!

Absolutely brilliant advice James, oh man I wish I had this advice a few years ago! I spent a lot of time trying to concentrate on trying to practice Rock, Jazz, Latin, independence, hand technique etc only to realise I was taking to much on and my practice was really disorganised and I never achieved anything. I figured out that I have a short attention span the max I can practice is about 3 hours straight. I have never been an eight hour a guy day I just don’t have that type of concentration.

Better late then never right? Anyway, I'm the same, and believe me, most of the people are. Concentration is something we can train and that has to be trained, but 3 hours a day it's already a good time anyway!!

Practice shouldn’t feel like it’s gonna suck. If you really love playing you look forward to getting better and playing to your favorite songs, which is two different things but, both make you better. One day you’d love to give a lesson and share your knowledge with a kid that was just like you.

That's so true!!! After the lesson with you I changed radically my way of practicing and in a month or so I can see so many improvements!!! For the first time I feel I am able to control my muscles and to know what I am doing. Also I am not doing anymore 10 hours of practice just to improve muscles endurance and power. Now I divide my routine into 2 hours sessions and between one session and the other I do around 1 hour of rest listening to music or watching videos. Tha total amount of time is still 10 hours per day plus 4 hours of rest, but I don't feel anymore the frustration and the tiredness I used to feel. I am working more on my brain than on my muscles and it is working so well to me, thank you for all your advices!!!

Great lesson James, thank u so much. Allow me ask you though, for types of exercises as per example, the stone killers, would you advice to do them 5 times a week, or way less? (hands and feet). - taking in consideration that the goal is to improve speed and endurance. In other words, more work, or more rest? (concentrated work)
@JamesPayneDrums
@JamesPayneDrums 5 жыл бұрын
More work is always what brings the results. Just listen to your body and your mind, if you can do 5 times a week, you will get there before who does it 4 times a week. Work hard and smart!

Not to mention that they probably miss out on other things in life due to their obsession. Which is perhaps a price they are willing to pay for greatness. Fair enough. But they could probably be great AND have a fulfilling life outside of their craft. I mean, they could probably get 95% of their results from 2-4hrs of practice- is it really worth putting in another 20 hours (exagerrating obv) for that extra 5%? Besides, it's not like that 5% won't come- it just won't come as soon (although maybe it will as you can probably maintain the consistency longer without burning out). It's like in the gym, I only train 1-2 days a week. Now, I'm sure I could probably make more gains training 3-4 days a week (though, again, not neccesarily, because we also have to factor in how recovered I am for each session). But it's not really MORE gains. It's just FASTER gains. And only slightly faster at that. I've been going to the gym consistently for over 10 years so I feel confident in saying that. But yeh, I think the point is that you can have your cake and eat it too if you are willing to put your pride/ego to the side and focus on what is actually practical and on being efficient and looking out for the point of diminishing returns in your practice.

Do you think it's all about concentration only? dont think so, ig your energy conservation comes into picture too like wont you get tired playing fr so long?
@JamesPayneDrums
@JamesPayneDrums 4 жыл бұрын
The physical effort is substantially decreased if you are concentrated to stay synchronized with the external forces (like the rebound and the spring of the pedal) at all times during your performance. If you take advantage of the external forces, you will let them make the most of the work, but to do so, you have to be very concentrated. That's why my body, even if it doesn't have a muscular structure that can sustain much fatigue, can still play fast for long times with a decent amount of power. It's because I let the external forces work, and I just mainly control them, and that's also why technique helps us so much, it's basically a more efficient way of using the body to deal with the instrument. Of course, then, we have human limits, and after some hours our body gets tired, but mostly because our concentration ends and we start working more physically.
