Very nice and informative video, speaking of Shadow of Mordor, I recently tried to run it with my Geforce GTX 1060 3GB and I experience short lapses of stuttering on a regular basis, not to the point where it is unplayable but it can definitely get annoying. The game has so far been set to the standard user settings. I was wondering if this problem for the most part has to do with the capabilities of my GPU or my CPU which is a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7500?

To be clear, sometimes, some gpu may have more vram than they can use,ex: i have a laptoo equipped with radeon R7 M440 dedicated graphics, the card holds 4GB of Vram, yet the gpu is so weak that it can barely get 1.5gb of ram usefull, the only advantage of the 2 additional gigs is that instead of getting 2 fps on high end game and high graphics, i get 8fps

I had an interesting thought while watching this video: why do graphic processors and vram come in a single unit? How come they aren't separate like a CPU and RAM? Of course this would completely change how mother boards are designed and probably lead to the splitting of Mobo market but could be an interesting concept. I'm guessing that in the early days of gpu it's was easier to design these cards for connecting to a pci but in an alternative history what if the standard for PC's was two sockets. One for a CPU and the other for a gpu with seprate ram ports one set for cpu and the other for GPU.

I spent over a month deciding what GPU to choose and I settled with the gigabyte 1060 windforce OC edition. most ppl said it was a wrong move but playing every game on ultra at 1080p around the 60fps mark. its a solid card.

All I know is that my GPU (GTX 550 Ti 1 GB) can play Alien: Isolation on max settings on my 1600 x 900 display. Not 1080p, etc. but gotta use what I got and can afford, lol.

I have a 2GB video card but I a ton of research and found a card that supported Vulkan. That is one thing that will really help you on game that support vulkan. And it was pretty much the best 2GB ram card I could find. My card works pretty fast it is not the fastest card but I like it.

2 GB is minimum these days but 3-4 is the sweet spot.

lol.... only two years and midrange cards (RX 480) have versions with more VRAM than enthusiast grade GPUs...

I play at 1080p with my GTX970. So even with the VRAM issue goin' around, I've had no issues. People need to realize, this card was built for 1440p, not 4k.

Here’s my question on VRAM, I have a 1070, that I’ve had since release, and the other day I was looking at my video ram. This card has 12 gigs of ram, and when I originally used it I remember seeing “available v-ram” in the graphics settings. Originally it showed 10gigs, but now it’s only 4 gigs available. Is there a way to clear this cache, or is it a big deal? I’ve noticed from purchase years ago, to now, that games I play are 10-30 FPS less than they used to be, but I’m sure it’s an age thing as well as a bottleneck due to a cheap cpu

Some of this stuff is a bit outdated for modern games: Resolution - Deferred rendering changes things: many scenes are actually rendered as various snapshots to the g-buffer. It's not just the base texture that matters, but all sorts of scene information must be taken into account: pixel normal, pixel depth, roughness, specularity, material ID, etc, and many of these are rendered anywhere from 8 to 16 bits float. HDR requires 16 bits per channel for Red, Green, and Blue, which gets downsampled later. And some engines add even more layers to this for special effects like separate passes for translucency, and custom depth to, say, show a silhouette of the main character when hidden behind a rock. I counted 19 images going to UE4's g-buffer, possibly more for lightmaps, the reflection environment, and shadows, and way more for custom depth. Expect around 50-100 MB for the g-buffer alone at 1080 full HD. 4k quadruples this to 100-400 MB! Anti-aliasing - Old MSAA required rendering pixel depth and stencils at 2x, 4x, or 8x higher resolution than the final frame which took a massive hit on the framebuffer and overall render time. However, modern deferred rendering can't even take advantage of that method. Instead, FXAA has been used for better performance at very high resolutions, which requires no additional memory, or TXAA on lower resolutions. TXAA renders random subsections within the pixels and resolves slowly over time. Unlike FXAA, which simply blurs pixels, TXAA actually results in something closer to an unbiased render, but doesn't work well on certain objects. The rest of the space is used for textures, shaders, cache, and polygons. Modern textures are produced at a 2k size, so several MB depending on compression settings, and modern materials use the base texture, roughness, a normal map, and possibly a displacement map as well as several others combined together. It's easy to see why more VRAM is necessary to render modern games.

I like to run a little known program called Space Engine and it loves VRAM. It’s not a game it’s more of a hobbyist renderer but you can move the camera around as you wish, then stop and crank up settings for a beautiful screenshot

Tip 1, lower your resolutions to the lowest Tip 2, find your screen size and multiply it with 4x frame rate. That's how much VRAM your GC is using. Buy the GC according to it.

It depend on your resolution : 1080p gaming only use about 1500 MB - 2500 MB of Vram 4K gaming can use up to 6-8 GB of Vram GTA 5 is the perfect example because that game had an "internal Vram usage counter" on the settings. So ? if you're just 1080p gaming, you don't need more than 4GB of Vram, but if you're 4K gamers, you will need 8GB (or even more) but, people who gaming in 4K usually use the fastest card anyway, you can't play 4K with GTX 750 Ti or R7 350 card.

VRAM is memory for graphics rendering. Depends on the game. Higher end gpus will have more VRAM, so typically just buy the GPU and not worry too much about how much VRAM it has.

I play star citizen with a 1060 6 gb and 16 gb ddr4 off of a ssd with a 17 7700 kadylake. The game runs pretty good !

A shorter version. Dual GPU use vram poorly, don't try to boost that way. (Similarly for SLI/Crossfire) If you are going up a level in vram, get a single GPU card. Even if you're shooting over the moon compared to your current demands, future games will probably start needing the 8 gigs or 12 gigs of ram that we will be seeing eventually.

I'm planning a build with the ryzen 5 1600 is a gyx 1060 6gb good enough for 1080p gaming and streaming or should I fork out the extra 200 on a 1070 with 8gb?

I just want to play age of empires 2 definitive edition with my son. His PC that was given to requires a minimum of 1GB of Vram. What would be an ok upgrade to get him going? I think the real answer, is not stating it depends, but building a chart. For people that play different games. It’s a beautiful learning curve I essay. Such as for each video giving suggestions for Old School Runescape needs, League of Legends, CSGO, Fortnite, Overwatch, and other high end preferences. It would greatly leap my understanding of the meaningless values we noobs get bombarded with. It’s like the annoying Cº only or Fº only descriptions for cooling I’m always wasting time converting, which would be better for the content creator to do but these are just my three cents.
