Good advice, and logic behind it that makes sense. I’m down just west of Des Moines and watering is something I’ve struggled with. This year though, I’m getting it down! Glad I found your channel, I’ve only really found one other that is “local” to me so I’ll be digging in to your channel in the next few days. Cheers man!

I’m glad it’s helpful. I literally laughed that I released a video about watering your lawn, during one of the wettest months of May I’ve ever seen. It still is the appropriate time of year for it, but it still keeps raining. Happy mowing.

Great video! Watering is the one thing I hate about lawn care only because it’s the most frustrating task to get right (and of course it has to be the most important). I’m using above ground Orbit Gear Drive sprinklers right now attached to Rachio timers, and it took me two weeks of messing with the sprinkler settings to get the coverage right. Hoping to do in ground one day!

Thanks. I hope it helps. It sounds like you’re being proactive and that always matters. The timers are great too. Now I just need it to stop raining here in Minnesota!

What about Sandy soil that drains fast... Still do the infrequent with deep watering? I feel like it drains quickly...

That’s a good question. For sandy soil, you actually need more frequency, with less time watering. So in effect the opposite of what I’m saying for yards in the Midwest.

Is deep watering for clay like soil still the best?

Well, you most likely won’t need as much water. It would be worth paying attention to how it retains water. Pick a few places in your yard, especially low spots and watch it this season. Adjust your watering accordingly. A simple test to know if the soil has enough water, step on it, when you move your foot if it pops back it’s hydrated. If it lays down and the area is dry, it needs more water. It should be easy to know when it’s too wet. I’d say trying to add soil in on top over the years would be a good idea.
