Growing up in a family of greats and moving from place to place, Ebe Dancel found a constant in music. In this touching TEDx talk, the singer songwriter talks about the music industry, making your own path, and how music saves everyone- himself, included.
Ebe Dancel is the former lead guitarist and vocalist of the defunct OPM band, Sugarfree. Ebe was also in projects and collaborations with other artists and organizations, one being Rock Ed Philippines' Rock Rizal. His songs have been used on stage in Culture Shock’s production “Sa Wakas”.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

They say depression is anger imploding. I think his genius lies in being introverted and sensitive, in emotion and empathy. And music was the expression of this genius. Maraming tao ang patuloy na inililigtas ng iyong musika, ginoong Ebe. Thank you for holding that space for us.

That explains his creative genius.He's a "tortured artist". There's a certain depth in his songs that only people who had gone through certain "darkness" can pick up on.

So that’s the reason why his music has gotten better, and why when he’s singing his older songs, the songs take on new meanings to the listeners. I am happy for you, Ebe. You’ve found your purpose and look at you now! I can’t wait to see and hear what else you’ll create.

Thank you so much for uploading this really meaningful talk. I could relate to his story especially the part about his struggles with his parents in permitting him to pursue music instead of other more lucrative professions. Right now I'm in the same difficult situation. I want to be a musician, but it's also always in the back of my conscience that I must find a "formal" or "actual" job (e.g. being a doctor, lawyer, teacher and such) so that I can lead a normal professional job, bringing home the bacon everyday, repaying my parents for the things they've done to me, serving the people, etcetera. Also, I can't help but feel guilty sometimes when I put my personal dreams (i.e. that of being a musician) over "catering to the needs of the general public", whatever that may mean ('cause I'm still clueless). The thing is, music doesn't really have much utilitarian or practical value, and it seems that society in general is obliging you to take on jobs that do, so that it can benefit from you. That's supposed to be the way it all should work. That's the system. But I just don't feel like taking part in it, at least in the conventional way. I want to be just like Ebe and all those other artists in the same vein. I want to work on my music, my writings, my paintings. And yet I can't. I'm trapped. I have to study this scientific course and I have to apply myself in class everyday, full time. What's even more dispiriting is that right after I graduate I have to take up masters (why, to be extra competent in the job market). I'm not allowed to have the time. How can I break free?
@miabelle1976
@miabelle1976 8 жыл бұрын

Hey man, It's been a year since the last reply on your comment, but I'm hoping you could see this. I'm 30 yrs old, I have a job. Yes, It's frustrating living in the corporate world, (I'm like a robot with the battery of money) I know you're frustrated, I was in your situation before, when I was in college, I have band, honestly I didn't feel pleasure on academics and on any subjects at that time, I was only coming to my class because of my allowance so I can share some money for our band's rehearsal, I was also heartbroken at that time and I don't give a f@#% to anyone including my mom. I was introvert like Ebe, I write songs about my experiences about love and heartbreaks. Eventually I stopped and drop out of college, (I don't want to be someone that I'm not), although I never stopped writing songs. I was suicidal, I was depressed and lonely, that emotion fueled me to release that pain and loneliness through by writing a song about the pain, and anger. Trust me, after you've finished the song, your angst and anger or pain or loneliness will disappear and be gone, you'll feel complete and content fro the time being until such event gives you heartaches again. Years later, I met someone, who believed in me, understand me, and will accept me for what I really am. Eventually I decided to pursue another course in college since I am getting old and I must have a degree to show her parents I could provide for her in the future, and luckily Iv'e graduated, then I applied for a job, then I was hired. I was in the same company until now. I know, I'm like a robot, I'm actually feel like one, and money was my fuel. I'm still writing songs every now and then, I don't want to be on the stage like Ebe, in front of many people, whispering, murmuring about the songs I'm singing. I just want to write and play it, sing it to the people I'm close with. Now, If you want to break free, I believe in you man, you just have to manage your time. Write from the heart, sing it like your singing it to the person whose in the song. Believe in it, Believe in God. P.S., I want to be the one of the first few people to hear your songs before it becomes popular like Ebe's songs:), stay strong man, Music is the ultimate escape from the corporate world.
