Do you know someone who has changed radically in their values and beliefs? Do you think it may have been brainwashing? Steven Hassan offers a 4-step reality testing formula developed over 45 years of research starting after leaving a cult that deceptively recruited him. The bottom line is that brainwashing is not just something that happens in cults-we are all susceptible. A talk to make you think.
Empowerment, Freedom, Global issues, Law, Psychology, Social Justice, cults Steven Hassan, PhD is a mental health professional and expert in undue influence tactics used by authoritarian leaders and destructive cults. His expertise includes harmful influence in cases of destructive religious and political cults, human trafficking, extremist and terrorist groups, one-on-one relationships, families, parental alienation, mini-cults, therapy and self-improvement groups, professional and institutional abuse, corporate and multi-level marketing programs, and harmful belief systems. He is the author of four books including Combating Cult Mind Control, Freedom of Mind and The Cult of Trump. He is a translated author with books in 10 languages. His foundational online course is Understanding Cults: The Basics. He is the Founding Director of the Freedom of Mind Resource Center, which provides training, consulting and support to individuals who are struggling to leave or recover from a cult and to families and organizations that are concerned about cult behaviors. He also is the founder of Freedom From Undue Influence, a not-for-profit entity with the purpose of conducting and publishing the research on undue influence that is needed to update legal and social policies. He developed the BITE Model of Authoritarian Control to identify control tactics and the Influence Continuum Model to discern ethical from unethical influence. He developed the Strategic Interactive Approach (SIA), as an effective and legal intervention alternative for families to help cult members. Dr. Hassan believes that access to the truth, freedom of thought, and freedom from undue influence are basic human rights. A complex systems approach, based in science and supported by the rule of law, is necessary to protect these rights. He is a member of the Program in Psychiatry and the Law at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. He is an experienced educator having served as an instructor for the Harvard Law School Trial Advocacy Workshop, as an elective teacher and a presenter for the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program, and in other educational and training capacities for other higher education, professional, law enforcement, governmental, non-governmental and advocacy group audiences. Dr. Hassan began helping people affected by undue influence after he was deprogrammed from the Moon cult in 1976 at age 22. His 45 plus years of experience give him a unique perspective on the damaging effects of undue influence and exploitation by destructive cults. He is a frequently requested speaker and media interviewee. Dr. Hassan holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Cambridge College and a Doctorate in Organizational Development and Change from Fielding Graduate University School of Leadership Studies. Visit freedomofmind.com to access information and services. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I agree that JW is a cult and I praise the Lord you were able to get out! Please don't abandon the Bible and God's word because of the way the watchtower twists and manipulates it. Christ is real and He is coming to judge the earth one day - pray, study your Bible and have a relationship with Him. God bless & and all the best as you look for the Truth! P.S. A good denomination to join if you are interested is Baptist and Melissa Dougherty has many videos on JW cults and the next steps froward

Wow. I cant imagine what that must be like. It may sound like an odd comparison, but i was raised by a narcissist. In that respect, i can understand what its like to start questioning things you once took for granted and understand that they just dont hold up. The problem with leaving one structure of meaning is that it has to be replaced by another. Otherwise- as i have felt- its more like im homeless, wandering and left with anxiety in place of security- even if it was ultimately a false security. As it definitely was. That said, I hope your journey is meaningful and leads to something so much greater than a false set of beliefs could ever be. The pursuit of truth is the highest calling man can have. Thats something we all have in common. Blessings brother.

I watched the Leah rimini Scientology documentary series and as a Jehovah’s witnesses was surprised to see how eerily similar we were. The shunning especially, heartbreaking what control the shunning policy exercises over People and how it breaks Families apart. Part of being and leaving a cult is also having to admit to yourself that you were wrong. Especially when you were taught to think you were the one and only to have the “truth”. But all these cults think that. And then to admit “it was a lie”. Wow hard pill to swallow.

As a kid raised in evanglicalism, leaving church at a young age and then leaving the faith shattered my entire world, but I feel like I saved the most vital parts of myself and my identity. I recognize all these tactics and affirm all the solutions to brainwashing. I began to suspect those who told me not to listen to the critics because they were agents of Satan, and got curious as to people who had left the church. Above all, being curious, asking "What ifs" is what saved me. I stayed curious about the world and people different from me, which made me more open to learning and resistant to fear. When you have insatiable curiosity you find fear less appealing and it becomes less effective. Curiosity is an underrated virtue.

A pretty good way to shut up dissenting voices is to demand endless explanations, interrupting with rapid fire questions, and rejecting or ignoring any and all answers with authoritative dismissal. "Spoken like a communist." "Well, that's what the lying media says." "Oh so you just believe everything you read, do you?" and the old standby: "well I don't know about that."

This is important work; but like many time misses discussing the complexity of children born into cults. Imagine if all the social forces in your life were trying to keep you in the cult? Imagine if you didn’t have a pre-identity but all you knew was being mind-controlled and coerced. Imagine if you had no money, resources, connections, education, and had been abuse from birth. Imagine if you had significant mental and physical health issues and even disabilities due to being trafficked, and medical neglect. How easy would it be to “think for yourself” and leave the abusive community?

Also, I appreciate it all the more that Steve correctly condemned authoritarian political cults, in addition to pseudo-religious cults and other cults. I have thankfully never been part of a cult, I have a lifelong disgust of all cults and I have the deepest sympathies for those they abuse and manipulate. I understand many former victims of cults, likely Steve included, might not find it easy to talk about their experience, either out of embarassment ("How did they trick me ?") or out of fear (direct threats and harassment by cultists), but it's all the more important they talk about this, and society be supportive of those who tell the truth about cults and the danger they pose to individuals and all of society.

Almost everyone does that, the Miligan experiments showed that. Those that don't do that, more often than not, are in fact in cults & following their indoctrination instead. Only group that on mass were not pulled in by the Miligan experiments were Australians, but Australians have their own culture of blind allegiance to mates & believe your mates care for you & it's your duty to care for them in return, even if that harms you, look at Dawn Frazer, accepting a lifetime Olympic ban, cause she was accused of doing something one of her mates actually did & so her "cult" told her, she must therefore just cop it, not dob. KZfaq algorithm keeps people stuck in a loop and that is really dangerous if your watching videos that just validate your stance on a subject but their stance is wrong. Alot of people just repeat what they are told then when asked to explain what they are saying they never can. I have conversations with people daily who make statements then when I ask a question they can't answer it. I believe being brainwashed is people just repeating what they are told and can't explain why they are saying it. It always seems to be democrats. I'm never against the person. I'm against their stance on a subject. They always attack me and my character while I debate their reasoning. They can never explain the statements they have made. They just repeat what they are told.

What I’m trying to undo is part of a really weird story. I put a little bit farther down so you can choose with her or not to read it. Thank you for reading. So I’ve never been religious, but over the last year and a bit, I have developed an interest/growing obsession with the concept of religion. So I start watching more and more videos of crazy religious claims and debunking them. Here’s the stinker. Whenever I run into a claim I can’t debunk, I get really anxious and I start to get scared of the concept of a god without actually believing in one. Long story short, I’ve only recently found out I’m BRAINWASHING/INDOCTRINATING MY OWN SELF! It’s terrifying! Hopefully this can start to help me 💙

One tactic that I've seen these mind controllers or cults use is massage. I believe that these covert hypnotic scripts are induced into the person is by getting them extremely relaxed with light touch massage. They will often run their knuckles up and down your spine which will create a state of complete bliss, relaxation, and trance. This is called the "autonomous sensory meridian response." I had this happen many times, just before strange or weird events would happen. Often I would experience things such as "street theatre." It was like I was being led by hypnosis or some sort of mind control to see this street theatre, but I could not understand what I was supposed to get from seeing this nonsense. I would be very cautious about letting somebody do this. This seems to open up your brain in a way so it can be exploited.

I had a friend who fell in with a guy who was selling supplements. Within 2 weeks of meeting her, he was living at her house and setting up "parties" to introduce his product line. I was skeptical, but went to one of the parties. After his presentation-which seem innocuous enough-I innocently asked him how he got interested in health and wellness. Most people love to talk about themselves and their interests, but this guy immediately got defensive and angry. He shot back at me, "what do you mean, how did I get into this??" and walked away. It was so bizarre that I knew for sure he was deliberately scamming her. Healthy, on-the-level people don't need to lie and exaggerate. They don't mind answering followup questions and will readily share specific data or sources of information that help prove their position. Normal, innocent people want to have their day in court to justify their innocence. Healthy people will gladly state their goals and preferences because they want to be understood. When someone doesn't do these, or starts talking fast, bouncing between points, changing the subject... then DO NOT trust them.

I don't really have a mental illness. My mum just snapped and tried to kill me and had me locked in a psych unit at 18 because I had chronic fatigue syndrome from drinking unsafe water. She didn't like that I couldn't move out of bed for 6 weeks in her house (2.5 years of sleep in total). The medication made me hallucinate, I was homeless and she'd swapped my medication for fake medication.

@@anonymousjohnson976 Yeah. This video gave me a reason to start a new list of easily identifiable cult traits, and that's the one that went on the list first. ~~~ Years ago, a woman gave me a theoretical article on what constituted a cult. She wanted me to testify against her husband in their divorce on the claim that he was a cult leader. So, I asked a lawyer if there was a legal definition of what constituted a cult. The lawyer said there was no such definition. ~~~ Now consider the role of lawyers in the fact that Shelly Miscavige has not been seen in public since about 2006. I'm open to suggestions on how that should show up on this new list.

I used to be a part of a Lestadian (Christian sector), and I was raised in that group since I was a baby, every Sunday listening to the brainwashing. Curiosity and friendship with different people or their ways are really the only ways out. Learning about atheists and evolution and the scientific principles as well as cognitive bias were, as well as enjoying "sins" such as listening to pop music, were at the back of me getting out, and the final straw was when I saw Ricky Gervais say "Every one is born under the right God, isn't it lucky? A source does not have to lie to brainwash. The information given can be completely true but partial. This is the primary type that I have trouble with. It is impossible to disprove and perspective cannot be gained unless it is researched independently. If a nonbias or alternative perspective is not given within the first page of a Google search, people who are not knowledgeable will accept and often defend perspectives they should not. Critical thinking has become rare. Other popular types are authoritative and Group /identity conformity. Combine these and it is likely to succeed for the majority.
