How my studio wall works

One of the most common questions I get asked is, "How does your studio wall work?” In other words, how do I hang all these different sized paintings on my painting wall? So today, I thought I would show you.
I also share a tip about these 6" x 18" blocks of wood that hold my larger paintings off the ground. In most artist studios, old rickety paint cans are doing this job, but I find the wood blocks more stable and quick to set up, especially if you are alone in the studio. You can get them at any hardware store.
Let us know how you set up your painting wall in the comments below.
I hope you're having a relaxing weekend.
Nicholas

Thanks. Perhaps you could address the challenge of lighting a space that gets little to no natural light?

Love my painting wall. About 2 years ago my husband built my art studio in the basement of our new home where there are 2 big 2x4 feet wide windows so lots of natural light and 1 of my key criteria was for him to make sure I had 1 wall for me to paint. It is 11 feet wide, I just love it and I can work on more then 1 painting at a time. The room is 23feet long by 11feet wide.

I'm currently building my art studio and it's the exact same size as yours, 23 x 11. I have a 36 x 72 inch window in front of my painting wall. Still building the floor, it was an old weathered storage shed. Just finished the insulation. Still building the flood. Next I'm researching lighting...

I placed a sheet of 4' x 8' 3/4" plywood on the wall vertically, screwed into the studs, and two 4' x 4' 3/4 plywood panels to both sides centered. Now, I can mount anything at any height or horizontal length within the plus shape by various means. I use cinderblocks to sit canvases on when leaning against the wall.

Love this. Saw your year old post when in CVP too and have implemented this. One more tweak: found that I sometimes want to throw a large piece of Yupo or drawing paper up and am trying this idea - removed screws gently, put up drawings and when I need them for my cradled panels plan to GENTLY replace the screws in their holes. Jury still out on this...

This was such a great video. My studio has been through so many changes because I have been trying to function as a studio and a gallery. My next studio will be bigger and I am going to arrange the walls like you do. I visualize the next studio space all day long.

I have two large primed doors that I got from the hardware store attached to the brick wall in my studio, one on top of the other . I have been using hooks which hang over the doors, which means I am in a fixed position t and the canvas's sit rather high. This is a FANTASTIC video, I am going to get my electric drill out an start putting in screws. I'm also going to get some blocks, so many times I'm moving from the wall to my easel just because I can't reach. Thanks Nicholas your a champ! Sera from Down Under

Can you talk about lighting the studio. I only have a ceiling track light and wondered what you’d recommend for some type of floor lighting. Thank you. I need details and pictures. Thank you.

Thank you so much because I'm getting ready to change my entire setup. I do have another question though....different topic. I know that you usually paint on wooden panels. I think that you have them made for you. I don't have anyone to make them for me so I made one and I tack canvas to it while I'm painting, then roll up the painting and sell it un-stretched. I would think that the shipping would get way to expensive to really paint on a large wooden panel then ship it. Do you ship large wooden panels? And, if so, do you have a preference for shipping company? Also, I'd love to see one of your wooden panels on the back so I could see how it's built and the materials used. I apologize if you've already covered this in a video. I love to paint big but I feel like I'm really limited now because I'm no longer doing art shows so I'm trying to sell online. Also, please know that I'm a big fan. I love your videos and the calm, easy way that you talk about everything.

I’m creating a painter studio for abstract art in one of my bedrooms. Any suggestions for protecting the walls from paint splatter?

A plastic drop cloth can be pushed through the screws or nails and will protect the wall.
This is kind of cool....
