New York's three closest airports move 140 million people in and out of the most visited place in the United States. But these three travel hubs were not designed to handle this growing number of visitors. Here’s how New York's airports are evolving to handle one of the most complex airspaces on Earth.
Join Cheddar & CuriosityStream as we explore the unique histories and modern challenges, defining the future of each of New York City's one-of-a-kind infrastructure systems, in NYC Revealed.

Learned something new today. Thank you. When I still had my satellite subscription and watched mythbusters, my problem with the show was the stupidity of spending another minute or so doing a recap of something after the 4-minute break. I NEVER watched the show live, I always recorded it, and then FF through the commercials. I guess I should be lucky I haven't had the subscription for over 10 years. Also, let's not forget the huge logo on the screen (of course all channels do it, so it was the race to the bottom for that habit). Does CuriosityStream put their logo on the screen during the shows? I have always felt if I am paying a separate charge for something (a la HBO back in the day), it was a premium channel and must not have ads or crap on the screen. I don't know if the new channels that are out there these days slap their logos on the screen, but I am not going to pay for it. It's why I love netflix and amazon prime video (the real prime, not their free-with-ads channels).
@bikeny
@bikeny 2 жыл бұрын
@Zaydan Naufal Here in the States there used to be (and it might still be around, I don't know) a weekly publication that one subscribed to and it was mailed to one's home or you bought it at the newstand. It was called TV GUIDE. Or you would scroll through the online channel guide. Now, in the channel guide, sure there would be a logo and name. No problem with that. So once you saw what you wanted to watch, you select that channel and you start watching. My complaint is that during the actual showing of the content the logo is displayed. It blocks the view of the picture and is annoying (to me at least, since I am old enough to remember what it was like seeing just the content). Some channels also slap on-screen text such as promos for upcoming episodes or other items. I do love my Netflix and Amazon Prime Video subscriptions as there are no logos and no on-screen text when you watch the content from them.
@bikeny
@bikeny 2 жыл бұрын
@Zaydan Naufal Does your cable provider or satellite provider have an on-screen channel list that you can scroll through? If not, then yes, I agree that having logos on the screen during the content being shown is helpful.

Lol at the "talks of a rail link." I live right off a Metro stop in DC, and it's awesome being able to just hop on the same system I use to get anywhere else and go to Reagan National (and they're currently wrapping up an extention to Dulles, so both DC airports will soon be connected to the entire DC Metro system). When I want to go somewhere or someone visits me they just hop on the train and show up at my apartment like half an hour later and it only costs them a few dollars. It's far from perfect, but I'm honestly surprised to hear that with how large NYC's rail system is that that link doesn't exist.

You can get to JFK by subway and air train. I have done it. It just takes forever because the airport is so far away. DC and New York aren’t really comparable just like Reagan and JFK aren’t really comparable. DC is a comparatively tiny city and Reagan is a small national airport. New York’s airports are actually extremely far away from the city downtown mileage wise bc the city is so large.

Want to instantly double the public perception of NYC airports? Extend the subway all the way to JFK and LGA. The fact that the biggest and one of the most complex subway networks in the world doesn't go to the airport has always blown my mind. And yes, I know JFK has a connection, but you have to transfer to the airtrain and all of the terminals aren't connected. That doesn't count.

Here's how you can fix these airport problems, 1. have a metro line from a major city built into the airport. it's a major hassle as well as a nightmare for people driving to and from the airport. a subway would make it easier for customers as well as give them time to relax after their flight. 2. At least have a 300 room hotel built nearby an airport in case flight delays or overnight stays, especially when customers cannot stay in the airport like in africa or the middle east.

Here in Singapore there's a huge contrast in passenger experience between arriving by air (via the world-reknowed _Changi_ Airport or the smaller _Seletar_ one that's quite new but more susceptible to weather disruptions as Malaysia is nearby & didn't want us to install an ILS system, claiming it's impose significant building height limits on them) vs by rail (where the long-distance station (Woodlands Train Checkpoint) is a bus transfer (which reportedly can skip your stop sometimes due to congestion) plus a 50min subway/metro ride to downtown) or by coach (with most services going to the decrepit Golden Mile Complex & Tower, with its choked toilets & heavily oxidised false ceilings (some which collapsed over the taxi stand several months ago) that's also had a reputation for sleeze with its nightclubs). The arriving experience by ferry is somewhere in-between though we were embarrassed previously where a cruise ship (either the Queen Mary or Elizabeth) had to dock at our container port ( _Pasir Panjang_ ) because our passenger terminal then was too small. That led to the Marina Bay Cruise Centre being built at the corner of our coastline, but even after adding a train station that's still some 600m away (probably to save on the cost of tunnelling that terminus station's overrun track under the sea if it was sited closer)

tbh, I wish Amtrak didn't suck so much and had more lines to more places. A lot of ppl would choose to come here by Train if they had the option (trains are just better than flying in every way), but Amtrak, with its slow speeds, limited access, and high price makes flying the default choice. We could continue to build bigger and fancier airports, but a train station can handle way more ppl way quicker and with way less land use. And for crying the fuck out loud, why isn't the subway connected to the airports!?

Did you just suggest trains have less land use? That train needs tracks to run over. That is a LOT of land. And no, people wouldn't choose to come to New York by train. Lets say someone is from the second largest city in the USA, Los Angeles, and wants to visit New York City. If you take the fastest train on the planet and give it a straight line to New York City, carving right through the three different mountain ranges on your path, and negating the biggest benefit of trains by not making a single stop once-so-ever, your ride would take just under 8 hours. A normal Boeing 737 can get you there in around 4 hours. And the 737 is competing against a dozen other jets while making a profit charging you $50.

I’m still wondering WHY PEOPLE ARE CALLING NEWARK AIRPORT IN NEW YORK.yes it is in New York’s airspace but still hate it when people say newyork Newark airport not NJ.say all you want but I’m from New Jersey so I get pissed when Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York get the credit and New Jersey is like the guy nobody likes

I find it interesting how bringing knives and machetes back is fine as long as they are in your luggage under the plane. I’ve brought those back many times from other countries and I’ve never had anything said to me

speaking of baggage if you don't want stuff lost ship it ups or fedex to your destination and pick it up when you arrive i know this might not make any sense but it works i know because i've done it just like shipping a package to grama's

I was recently booking a flight from New York to Minneapolis for my whole family and they asked, "Why did you book us tickets from JFK instead of LaGuardia?" I said, "Because Newark wasn't a good option for us and I've heard many jokes about LaGuardia being a hellhole but I never heard a similar joke about JFK." They blinked and said, "Yeah, that actually was true up until last month. But now it's no longer true as of two weeks ago." Haha

NYC should have built a new airport decades ago somewhere in upper New York. All the space in the world with a direct fast train going directly to Manhattan. Because now you still have to change at Jamaica and the LIRR can only bring you to Penn station so that’s no good

JFK has train tracks behind the airport that would have needed little repair, however as the tracks are privately owned, the Port Authority (The Port Authority is responsible for all NYC bridges and tunnels, JFK, LGA and EWR airports and NY & NJ sea ports.) built The Air Train from JFK to Jamaica at which point you have to transfer to the existing LIRR (Railroad): (this took over 3 years to build and is next to the only highway exiting JFK to Manhattan the Van Wick Expressway. (During construction a 20 minute ride just 8 miles took at times 60+ minutes about halfway to Manhattan).
