It’s not shallow, it’s centuries old. This country Stuff is brand new when you’re talking about the continent. The continent had tribes, nations, regions that were governed independently. You’re looking at this through the lens of the white man. Nigeria was not meant to be a country but a nation. You cannot blame the people for not wanting to assimilate. You should be proud! The one is to blame is the white man.

In its place, the general instituted a unitary system of government as a way of discouraging “tribal loyalties and activities which promote tribal consciousness and sectional interests and which must give way to the urgent task of national reconstruction.” The decree suspended aspects of the Nigerian constitution and, with it, the military government arrogated to itself wide discretionary powers. Definition of a nation: A large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory. Nigeria is many countries lumped together by colonialists to form a country. Hence the many problems we have, Nigeria can never work unless we agree to a referendum. We need to renegotiate our being together.

I don’t see why Nigeria won’t work…it’s all about mind-set. Many countries are one like USA, Ghana, Cameroon South Africa.etc.. Texas has tried seeding itself from the US many times to no avail. But they still see themselves as Americans. My opinion is, if we see ourselves as Nigerians not oduduwas, or Arewas or Biafrans, then there will be peace n unity. Nigerians division was/is based on tribalism. Once we learn to love one another, that We can live unilaterally with the resources we have, we will be VERY fine.

America is an immigrant society. Why don't you compare Britain to Nigeria? Let's see how you're going to break it down if you really know what you're talking about. Can someone please explain to me why a country will have almost it's entire land mass regarded as North; and only a slight stretch at the bottom as South. It seems to me that those who created this country intended the whole territory to be made up of North only, without South, East and West! This is one of the tragedies the British Colonialists created for this country: creating a huge North and a small South; which we find impossible to correct. This is one of the foundational problems of Nigeria which we need to redress if this country is to make meaningful progress politically or otherwise. Peter Aseme.

I have read a lot of Nigerian history and I must say that yours is an excellent summary. But before people think that the NYM crisis in the 1930s was about tribe...they need to know that in NYM, Awolowo supported S.G Ikoku, an Ibo and Zik support Oba Akisanya, a Yoruba. It wasn't tribe, it was an ideology split. Awo and Zik's relationship never recovered and they probably explained why Zik supported NPC at independence rather than Awo's AG.

Sadly the story teller here is a propagandist. Trying to rational the first coup and the region that carried it out. The first coup is what really broke this country and the motive for that coup wasn't for the general good of all it was specifically to put a certain region at the forefront. The good thing about hindsight and posterity is that the truth eventually stares you in the face. Keep up the propaganda while my country works at becoming great

I see most people in the comments are pointing fingers at tribalism. Well it seems like the easiest thing to blame because Nigerians don’t want to make Nigeria work. If at this point we still think or believe tribalism is the problem of this country, then we have a long way to go. Now let’s assume tribalism is the problem, are the regions not supposed to work effectively at their own levels to surpass each other in order to develop? Every region has representatives and allocations but your leaders are all corrupt and speak the same language, they see no tribe when they’re looting your money. They don’t have their people at hearts and that’s why Nigeria’s early leaders are way better, each of them trying to fight for its people. In a newly created country I don’t think they had any choice. For the past three decades, every region has a stand and some degree of power, what’s stopping them from making Nigeria great?

There are significant differences between the 1999 document and the regional constitution before independence. The whole idea of centralization and allocation in the 1999 document prevents the regions from any form of reasonable independence and has, instead, created political opportunists from all the regions that are simply sharing money with Abuja FG. This is why Nigeria will not work except the constitution devolves power to the regions and indigenous nationalities. No democracy with Nigeria's diversity works anywhere in the world.

Will the north agree that the country is restructured so that every region controls its own resources? I doubt that.... You don't operate a corrupt central government and expect opportunist leaders from the regions or state scrambling for whatever the center dishes to deliver for their people.... The North should accept resource base restructuring if they really want Nigeria to continue existing I see Hypocrisy in anyone maintaining this failed system of governance of the center and expecting a miracle in leadership at a hungry state or regional govt

@Hanan Yusuf Your comment is all wrong. The regions or states have little to no power. All you need to know this is to study the Exclusive, Concurrent, and Residual Lists of Nigeria's fraudulent 1999 document. Nigeria practices a unitary system of government.

Forcing 3 regions(people with different languages and cultures) to co-exist as a country was a total sham and it all happened so that Nigeria can continue to be in disarray and the colonial masters continuing to gain from the fruit of the divide. They knew from the onset that Nigeria being what it was would never make a meaning unless divided but chose to forced it on her anyways. Here we are still suffering from that one singular act of the colonial masters. They gave the then Nigeria to the greed and thirst for continuous oppressors and has cascaded to the current Nigeria.

See how they Strategically put the Northerners in Power and today we continue to See the manifestation of what happened Years ago with todays Northerners, they think they own Nigeria. They can be easily Manipulated by the slave masters (The British). They cannot do that westerners or Easterners...

Actually British set the time bomb and knows that it must surely explode one day so British will get indirect control again. They cut of Benue and Kogi which used to be under Southern Nigeria and gave them to North with desperate need to make the North far majority so with their loyal Fulaniz North they can have indirect rulership of Nigeria and that's just what is still happening today.

Reality stand...you on point Nnamdi zik made a terrible mistake by conflicting with Awolowo in controlling the west a yoruba dominated tribe, instead of facing the east and claim today benue and small portion of Taraba state, he sabotage awolowo effort to reclaim kwara and western part of kogi state. Both side lost all areas to the north due to division among themselves.
