Oh nooo Bubby. I love watching you fly. Plz Don’t encourage the rest of us to go out and make a bad name for quads. It took me a lot of restraint to not fly the flat irons illegally last summer. I felt like you are too high profile to really keep this video up :(. I say this as someone who lovs flying and wants to preserve it. You rock, and hopefully you can recognize I’m truly trying to be helpful to both you and the community.

I grew up in Boulder but do not have the guts to fly the flatirons since it's OSMP and completely off limits to drones. The 2nd place you went is NCAR and I'm pretty sure it's off limits as well. But, it's super cool seeing you dive down rock faces I've climbed many times. If the spots you flew were legal I'd be flying there every day. So crazy to see you here in Boulder.

Totally! Any open space and city parks are off limits. But I've been lucky with zero "karens" so far. And one cop I was talking to had no idea about drone laws. Good and bad.

@@PaulTurner24 The proximity to the Flatirons which are usually, no matter weather, packed with climbers/free climbers, made this flight way more dangerous than any washington monument dive.

"Off limits" in what sense; air space or take off and land location? The local authorities do not govern the National Air Space so that would be an over-reach. But the take off & land thing is different but I guess the advantage of LR is take off from a spot no one cares about.

@@PaulTurner24 I lived in CO 11 years but moved ages ago. I go back every couple of years to visit. I was back two years ago and flew at a local park near Aurora and saw no signage or was approached by anyone saying it was off limits. Is that a statewide thing or just Boulder? So open space it "off limits"? Do they really care about what happens in an area devoid of a human presence?

Congrats for finally flying LR and leaving no quad behind! LR Achievement unlocked! However, as @dasfoot said, flying LR w/o a GPS and GPS rescue setup is asking to lose another quad (as well as not knowing how far you are going and what obstacles are between you and your destination.)

For mountain surfing or long range, I so would not consider DJI to be a good option. If you lose video for a moment then you're done for. It's either HDZero or analog for that.

Lately I thought there's a couple good alternatives out there but looking at the GoPro 12 footage right here, man, just nothing beats that gopro look for FPV imo... ^^

Using drop-from-the-sky-on-RC-failsafe Betaflight will keep losing you quads with mountain surfing. Better to either set up RTH on there (and test it) or use a firmware that has that capability as standard.

No, the Odonata and Bubito were designed side by side- quite literally. We had discord calls at 1am over our winter breaks talking together while making ours respectively! Was a really fun time.

I put GPS on almost everything. I don’t own a drill n 4” or above that does not have GPS. That could have recovered the quad from the failsafe easier than that walk through the snow.

It wouldn't have mattered- it was within the minimum safe activation distance. Not that far away, just downhill. I don't put GPS on my freestyle builds (which this strictly was) because I mostly fly in urban environments where automated failsafe behavior would be dangerous.

@@craftedkwads it looked far enough to be out of the safe distance check. The safe distance check can be reduced and the failsafe method can be set depending on the environment you are flying if you have GPS. This can be changed from m the BetaFlight LUA and I believe the BetaFlight OSD allows changing this as well. I have it set to drop most of the time but if I decide to fly in an open area, I can change it to rescue pretty easily.

Hey how do you guys find mountains to fly in legally, most of the ones I know of are either ski resorts, national parks, or small ones.

@@vrupe it's difficult to understand all the laws, they dont make it easy. National Parks is a big no, correct. National Forest varies by state, but often its OK. But Wilderness areas are also NFZ. Your best bet is BLM land! Which there is plenty around!

You need to check the airspace maps to find places. The FAA is the sole governing body of airspace within the USA and has applications like B4UFLY and Aloft where you can see the status of airspace in real time. If the airspace map is clear, you are clear to fly over said area (responsibly!). Note that this is in terms of airspace- launch, landing, and operation can be governed by local bodies as well.

Yeah...nice job coming from out of town and flying two spots where it's locally regulated and you're not allowed to fly. This is all Boulder OSMP.

@@craftedkwads you're not wrong but...they flew from private property controlled by the city of boulder. And they can regulate where you take off and land. This an extremely crowded area where 1000s hike and climb daily. Glad they got their clip but they're setting a terrible example to the community.

Agreed. Beautiful footage but not cool. Gotta love going on a wilderness hike just to have some idiot buzzing around. That outro with the animals is a huge reason this should not be done.
