Testing the RTX 2080 Ti in 12 popular and demanding games in 2024 and comparing it to its predecessor, the GTX 1080 Ti, using an average gaming PC.
Support Iceberg Tech: / icebergtech
While the GTX 1080 Ti is still fondly remembered in 2024 for its performance, value and longevity, its successor has yet to receive any such praise. Launched at the spearhead of Nvidia's RTX range, the RTX 2080 Ti offered features nobody was sure what to make of, as well as an indeterminate amount of extra performance, and all for a $300 premium over the previous flagship. Perhaps it's time to revisit the 2080 Ti and give it another chance to impress?

Oddly enough, this is the video I’ve been hoping for. I game in the rear view mirror, so old tech that’s still functional but can be had cheaper than new is my go to. Over the last few months, I moved from RX580 to a 1080Ti and now a 2080Ti. I find the 2080Ti to be a delight to use. I can crank up settings, run some RT and still enjoy over 60FPS. Old reviews crap on the card for its price compared to the 1080Ti, which was truthfully the only thing “wrong” with it (Micron chips aside). I’m glad you identified that, Ice Berg. I’d love to see an MSRP analysis of the 2080Ti’s performance vs the same of the newer gens.

@@_qwe_fk_1700 Except people aren't saying NVIDIA is bad because their GPUs are trash, they're saying NVIDIA is price hiking their cards for profit which they absolutely are. $2000 for a 4090? @@rifter_1695 The 5700XT has better DX12 and Vulcan performance from it's RDNA chips than Pascal. In modern games a 2060 now performs alongside and even beats 1080tis too for the same reasons. Mind you, the much maligned 2060 was actually one of the bigger gen on gen upgrades in 60 cards (the 1060 was an even bigger upgrade over the 960) coming out at launch matched to the raster performance of a 1080 and over 50% faster than than the 1060. I bought a 2080 Ti when it came out and it ended up being one of my best graphics card purchasing decisions, I was running 2 1080s in SLI at the time and SLI was clearly on its way out. While the entire internet was all a cry and wail over the (un)availability and absolutely insane prices of Ampere a few years later, I was still sitting comfortably with my 2080 Ti without a care in the world. DLSS helped a lot with my 4k monitor and I easily weathered the scalper storm with this card. I imagine if I had chosen not to buy it and stuck with 1080 SLI all the way to the end of the pricing insanity that lasted years I would've hated my life, what with SLI support being effectively non-existent at that point in demanding games.

@@ij6708 it had MSRP of 1000$. It was 30% faster than 1080ti. Plus if your target was 1440p ultra basically 2024 is the year when you need to go down to high. Now consider this - card is 5yo. That means if you are not accepting lowering down graphics quality it means it cost you 200$ per year. Well on same settings same performance but less vram 3070 lasted you 2 years so 250$ based on MSRP so that not only means that at the end of the day 3070 cost you more - you could get 2080ti 2years earlier and keep it one year longer meaning that it's lifespan was over double the 3070. Not to mention that if you were building high end PC (and you should considering that you are able to afford it to balance such powerfull card) it wasn't that much expencive addition %whise. Good deal doesn't mean cheap. Good deal means good amount of value pulled out of the product. Not to mention RTX tax beeing real. And I mean for real - wasn't the card same proces node? I had a 1080 ti in my rig for blender and stable diffusion and upgraded to a 2080 ti and it's the best decision I ever made. stable diffusion went from taking 11 minutes to render and image down to 30 seconds. and blender went from 4 minutes on a complex frame down to 35 seconds. that's 7x faster in blender and 20x faster in stable diffusion. in llama 3 I got 80 tokens per second compared to 49, not a huge increase but still worth it for my workflow. those RT and tensor cores really make a huge difference

I picked up one of these for $590 the day after the 30 series was announced right before the mining craze and it's still chugging along in my media PC in my living room. While it's mostly just a media playback GPU for me at this point, I do play the latest Forza on it quite a bit and it does a great job with it at a custom res of 3360x1890 at high settings. These days I probably wouldn't pay more than ~$280 for one of these as you can get a 6700XT new for $300 which has about the same level of performance, 1GB extra of VRAM and a warranty.

The 2080Ti holding up in today's games is an example of hardware with features way ahead of it's time. Of course, the 2080Ti was the better buy, 6 years later, but hindsight is 20/20, and Nvidia's execution of DLSS and RT was near flawless. People who bought into the $1000 card for something that they wouldn't find useful for the next 3-4 years must've felt pretty bad. Heck, even the 3070 barely outcompetes the 2080Ti except in scenarios where VRAM is insufficient.

For full transparency, I haven't watched a single second yet. I just wanna bring something up and see if it gets mentioned. We're all semi aware of die scaling and how it relates to cost/yields right? The 2080 Ti is a 754 mm^2 die, literally more than double the size of a 1080 Ti die. Except unlike a Pascal GPU where the majority of the die is Cuda (Integer and FP cores), in a Turing GPU parts of the die are reserved for RT and Tensor cores. This means unless those cores are active, that extra die space is "wasted." That's why it seems like such bad value, because it's BIGGER than a 3090 TI, BIGGER than a 4090, in order to be the first RTX GPU and still outperform the 1080 Ti. Edit: Not to mention the similar TDP. Big die means big power draw, and at double the size the 2080 Ti draws the same power.
@m8x425
@m8x425 4 ай бұрын
That's right. Bigger die = Much, much higher cost. Less cuts from the wafer compounded by poorer yields. Nowadays, the same size wafer costs a lot more, while Nvidia is paying through the nose for an N4 wafer. Higher TDP = Beefier PCB and VRM's. TDP and power consumption on the other hand will depend on die size, transistor count, architecture, clock frequencies, and overall how the GPU is being used. Also, the 2080ti consumes anywhere from 20w to 50w more than a 1080ti, despite the TDP figures. And that's why it irritates the shit out of me when a KZfaqr says Nvidia made a mistake with the 1080ti, which they all seem to believe. We ended up getting charged $500 more for something that was in development and not readily usable. I would have rather had more CUDA cores and I would have been more than happy to deal with a card that has a higher TDP. The 1080ti was the end of the era of Brute Force through shader cores. The reason Nvidia released the 1080ti was not to counter VEGA, but because their product channel had become backed up. The ideal turn-around from when a card is manufactured to being sold is 6-8 weeks, which at that time cards sales were going beyond that. They were not selling as many Pascal cards as they had projected. At that time there were rumors of a mid-cycle refresh. But then the 2017-2018 Mining boom happened and this turned everything around.

The 2080 Ti was definitely less than expected upgrade over 1080 Ti by most metrics: VRAM size, basic pixel and compute throughput, but the more efficient architecture over time proved itself and that's besides AI and RT add-ons in the newer games. Nvidia had to make some performance compromises with Turing, since it was build on a similar manufacturing process with the same transistor destiny as for Pascal, while reserving space for all the new hardware features of the RTX line that were yet to bring tangible benefits. Ampere was much better balanced, but the price hikes tarnished its image for quite a while.

The thing was that Ampere was "supposed" to be a return to form in a way with the 3080 priced at $699. It's just that the second crypto boom and the Chinese death cold caused the cards and everything usable to be hiked to high heaven. The fact that everyone decided to just go ahead and pay those inflated prices either from drops or from scalpers along with the current AI boom have convinced Nvidia that normal prices were a dumb move and that we will never have decent prices for GPUs for the foreseeable future.

The 2080 had the same performance as a 1080 ti at the exact same price and same down the stack. The 2080 ti was the only justified GPU and it was a mark up over the older cards. Game optimization is kinda dead. Games are much bigger and more complex than ever before, so optimising for every possible combination of hardware is getting increasingly difficult, time-consuming, and resource intensive. Though we really should first determine what good optimisation means. A game using console levels of VRAM on PC isn't a sign of bad optimization, for example. Whereas VRAM consumption staying largely unchaged even if settings are reduced from max to lowest is a sign of bad optimization.

2018: $1000 2080 Ti 2020: $500 3070, after driver updates now outperforms it in a lot of scenarios or matches close to it (ofc smaller 8GB VRAM but VRAM is cheap, that was NGREEDIA) 2021: $480 RX 6700 XT launches and after some driver updates, sometimes beats the 2080 Ti in non-RT situations, or comes close depending on the game (in 2024 can be bought new for $330 and has 12GB VRAM.) This is why mid-range upgrades are usually the better option imo.

Turing was a good upgrade, but too expensive when it launched. Nvidia did the super thing a year after release, but not for the 2080 Ti. This card is still pretty damn good for many games today, and has quite low prices on Ebay vs when new.

To my recollection the 999 MSRP was a lie. I have never seen a 2080ti selling for lower than 1200 during its entire lifespan.

yeah it was the aib price basically with 1200$ being founder price. seems nvidia's 2 tier pricing is making reviewers forget the prices. also it wasnt a lie its just that aibs wanted the same price or more than nvidia so they probly made a couple models with low supply for the 999$ price and the rest were all at higher prices.

I paid 1058€ for my FE including taxes (pre-order). So I guess thats the closest this card has ever gotten to that price during its life time.

It was even worse. Because the 1000 dollar price tag was never real. Nvidia priced the FE at 1200 dollars which was the real price. Meaning it cost 70% more than the 1080ti. Because the FE was 1200 dollars that's what the cheapest AIB models costed too. It wasn't until late into it's life cycle in late 2019 and 2020 that 1000 dollars models were available.

I bought a reference 2070super and I have to say quite impressed with those. For 1080p gaming you wouldn’t need much more. My 3090 gets the same fps..just at 4k and twice the ray tracing. Still very impressed

I went from Haswell (GTX770) to a 1060 6GB, to say there was a jump in performance and a cut in my electricity bill is no exaggeration. Games literally went from looking dated to modern in an instant, and ran at higher FPS and resolution, detail etc. I bought the card because at the time the first crypto boom was mostly affecting AMD prices, the 1060 was almost half the price of an RX580.

The 2080ti is really good for stable diffusion in fp16 due to its bigger bus width and it under volts quite well, maintain good speed in SD. It ties with 4070 in SD. Best of all the vram can be upgraded to 22gb. Can be found cheaply these days. I prefer the 2000 over 3000 due to the undervolting performance. 150w for the 2080 ti. Having 2x 2080ti will outperform 4080 in SD. 3090 are still pricey. 2080ti is GOAT for SD.

Great video, love these comparisons. Its especially nice when you're reviewing my own GPU. When I was upgrading from a gtx 1080 I was dithering between the 2080TI, 3070 & RX 6700 XT and when a very reasonably price 2080TI came up on Facebook Marketplace it won. I only play at 1440p with Medium to High settings so I should get many years with the 2080Ti.

Oh how Nvidia changed over the years. Back in 1999 I upgraded to GeForce 256DDR and I've purchased many Nvidia GPU, since then (for me and others due to a business). BUT, late 2019 and Jan 2020, I switch my house hold over to RX580 (8GB) and 5700XT. I didn't pay scalpers/miner prices, for those cards, nor I didn't want to, support the Nvidia tax and we are currently happy with rasterization performance (mostly 1080P and some 1440p). Not having RT game play, which can have a big drop in FPS doesn't bother me. Once the cards can run RTX with a good frame rate with out Nvidia tax pricing, I mite switch back. For the release price/real world cost back 2019/2020 for the 2080TI, I've got 2 GPU and can still could buy another new mid-range.

If the 2080 Ti was $700 then I think it would have been loved. The problem was that the regular rtx 2080 was $700 which was the same price as the 1080 Ti from 1.5 years earlier. I believe that comparison is more valid. You should be able to spend the same amount each generation and still get a big bump in performance.

I sincerely hate the fact that NVidia and AMD have successfully infected almost every person related to tech with their upscaling shit... "[...] to stay above 30 FPS [the 1080Ti] needs upscaling [...]" No, it fucking don't! Just set the quality preset from ultra to high and you will be happy to see better 99th percentile lows... there is not only "low" and "ultra" please stop that upscaling madness, it looks waaay worse in 1080p than turning to high instead of ultra settings... Edit: Sorry, I was pretty upset about the upscaling part :D I'm glad that the settings were at least a mentioned option in the Forza Horizon 5 part of the video :)

If there had been any ray tracing supporting games at launch, maybe this would have been better received. But, if you think about how big a jump over the 1080 Ti was over the 980 Ti, it's not surprising the jump to the 2080 Ti wasn't as big. The 1080 Ti was a 60% performance increase over the 980 Ti, if it'd had just been 50%, then the performance of the 2080 Ti would have been a 40% uplift instead of 30%, which would have been more palatable.

2080 Ti is great! Bought 2 for about $300+tax each last year. The extra 3GB VRAM over the 3070 will give it much more potential longevity. Might need to underclock the memory using MSI Afterburner in case it was used as a miner.
