Surprisingly this isn't that insane a strategy. Plenty of real life military strategies and evolutionary strategies rely on overwhelming capacity by saturation. For example trees mass-producing acorns every few years to overwhelm squirrels, ships shooting more missiles than the enemy ship can shoot down at once, or cicadas saturating their predators with so many of them are once every two decades that they can't lose a large fraction. Indeed, we have a word for these kind of strategies, predator saturation. In fact, Armenia and Azerbaijan had a war in 2020 and Azerbaijan sent waves of AN-2 heavy biplanes out with drone controllers. A heavy biplane is an easy target for modern missiles and that's the point. By throwing an obsolete aircraft at a missile, you both deprive the enemy of said missile and locate the launch sight. Then you can send in a strike fighter or artillery to deprive them of a launcher.
@QueueWithACapitalQ
@QueueWithACapitalQ 3 жыл бұрын
@@petersmythe6462 yeah but sending more missiles then the enemies point defence can handle is a legit stratergy and doesnt incur mass casualties. sending wave after wave of people to their deaths is stupid and only happened in ww1 because there was litterally no other way of taking the enemies line and once tanks came out it was clear that trench warfare was obsolete

It's a minor point but: Launch your invasion at the night time side of the planet, when your troops use ranged weapons and definitely need light to see, while the enemy uses melee weapons and might not even be affected by the dark. For added bonus, this also makes your ships in orbit far easier to spot from the surface.

I remember watching Starship Troopers, and thinking that the humans constantly say in their propaganda that the Bugs aren't capable of thinking (despite evidence to the contrary), whereas the humans are actually choosing to not think. Also in the first battle of Klendathu, the humans attack looks more like ants scurrying around than the Bugs did.

Problem with that statement is of course, there is zero evidence to support it. The Humans had encountered and fought the bugs before and their expectations of their capabilities, however flawed, were based on those previous encounters...

According to the book, the initial invasion was supposed to be a surprise. The ships jumped in a tight formation but somebody messed up causing a few mishaps, such as collisions. The troops on the ground though didn't know about this because they were in heavy combat. Poor intel was a problem in the book as well. The upper chain of command claimed it was a victory, but the troops on the ground knew better.

In the novels, the whole war with the bugs was literally a war for real estate. They never hated each other or anything. In the words of Rico, "It was just unfortunate that two militaristic species both wanted the same real estate." And since they wanted the land for colonising, they limit any form of orbital attacks to very minor ones only, and nukes are only used to clear nests that are underground and very sparringly at that. It was also the reason why they have to take the slow route of using infantry, even with power armour, to clear the land as they want to keep collateral damage to the planet as low as possible.

First question you should ask when you are invading a planet: Do I actually need to INVADE this planet? Do I care about any of the life forms on the surface or do you only want the other material resource? Are you conducting a conquest of another alien civilization you do not actually want to genocide, or are you killing bugs you do care if you slaughter? If you are conducting an extermination, grab asteroids and start chucking them at the planet from as far a range that is practical. Reduce the planet to a lifeless world through repeated and sustained extinction level impacts.
@roblaquiere8220

Oddly enough, the bugs did have this thought in mind. The bugs destroyed Rio using asteroid bombardment. Wasn't that asteroid strike what caused Earth to launch this hilarious invasion to begin with? Perhaps the bugs thought humans were pests at first, and the bugs were just exterminating these pests (humans). I guess the bugs thought invading a planet on the other side of the galaxy was excessive spending! EDIT: After some thought, I recall the asteroid strike was actually a random occurrence that the government later pinned on the bugs to get the war started. A false flag operation if you will.

If you wanna simply conquers a planet with no care for collateral damage and instead would prefer to exterminate all planetside lifeforms, I suggest Virus Bombing the entire surface, then wait 24 standard hours before using orbital bombardment to "ignite" the now methane gas filled atmosphere. After that, just to make sure, you send in legions of Adeptus Astartes to eradicate whatever might have survived underground. If you still aren't 100% sure after all that and don't in fact care for the planet in question, just pick your doomsday planet killer weapon of choice or whichever you have currently handy and blow the planet into tiny bits AND then sweep those bits with clean with Adeptus Astartes. Any planetary debris large enough to perhaps one day support life again you infest with Orcs, just have an Orc fart on it or execute an Orc on it and leave the body behind, but that's for when who ever used to live on that planet really upset you.

Theoretically an invasion could fail if the victims somehow managed to starve out the invaders.

How to invade a Planet. 1. Get a giant asteroid ( Or many large asteroids just to make sure ) 2. Slam them all into the planet ( preferably all at the same time ). 3. Wait for the ecological and climate damage to kill off most of the surviving inhabitants. 4. Invade and finish off the survivors if they are still around before they have a chance to heal. 5. Wait for the planet to heal its climate when the planets atmosphere becomes dust free.

One can also argue that the Dropships might just have a limited range, meaning that the Carrier Ships NEEDED to have such a tight formation/proximetry to one another to make sure that they could land their troops in close proximetry to one another and sucessfully establish an LZ. Afterall that does make more sense from many points rather than scattering your whole troops all over the Planet's surface. I also assume the Intelligence Report was fubar due to the fact that they probably only had a singular vessel in high Orbit and that hardly more than a dozen Plasma-Bugs focussed on it at best... this in addition with evasive manuvers would render the Plasma-Bugs fairly useless I'd reckon. However when we are talking about hundreds if not thousands of Capital ships and supposedly thousands (if not more) of Plasma-Bugs, it's a whole different story, considering that it seems like those Plasma-Bugs have unlimited Ammo. Last but not least the second wave wasnt landed and so, we have no clue what the original invasion plan truely looked like aside of what we saw. I for one have difficulties to imagine that the whole idea was just to get those Troopers down, blast some bugs and call it a day... (seeing how logistical issues and strategic conduct of the Invasion would have bound to come up in due time).

@morganrobinson8042
@morganrobinson8042 4 жыл бұрын
@@jenniferbrewer5370 But Verhoeven has a bad habit of running headfirst into Poe's law. I mean, Robocop reads equally well as a satire of 80's action movies and as a foundation for the spectacles that followed. And no matter how much he changed the context, the story told was still largely what we expected in Starship Troopers. Without knowing naval tactics or ground strategy, it's easy for a laymen to just accept the stupid decisions made because movies always have bad tactics. Verhoeven tries to make satire, but he tends to end up with conventional action movies because he tries to go big and goofy and explicit. Besides that, half the book is Heinlein describing a meritocratic authoritarian state with limited franchise rights and an expansionist interstellar policy. While describing that could be interesting on it's own, the meritocracy would make satire more difficult to parse and subtle, which is why it was removed from the film. Like the power armor that made all that fighting seem feasible. Verhoeven wasn't interested in exploring the philosophy or events of the book, he was interested in setting up a counterpoint.

The book was a jingoistic ode to the soldier and the military, and the director wanted to make an anti-war satirical movie. I feel like the movie was a script that happened to be given the name Starship Troopers by some exec who saw dollar signs. They're very different stories, the book has the aliens as explicitly the enemy of humanity and implies that peace is impossible and each has to fight for their right to exist. The movie, meanwhile, questions whether or not the aliens even attacked.

Here would have been my strategy of engagement. Phase 1: Early operations are to begin scouting out surrounding space and use satellite images to map the surface, shortly after this, small easily hidden squads of recon drop troopers are ordered to land on the surface for better detailed mapping. Phase 2: The invasion commences shortly after with a scattered fleet to commence annihilation with orbital bombardment. Bombers are ordered to make runs against the anti-ship bugs and keep up a scorched earth campaign to force the bugs underground. Phase 3: Orbital drop troopers are to land in strategic landing zones and perform a shock and awe attack of exterminating hostiles from the landing zone and establish points of entry for the bugs. Mobile bases are to land first and begin construction of defenses to create kill zones. To prevent any tunneling attacks, high emitter frequency defenses are to be set up around said bases. Phase 4: Landing of main units shall commence with tanks and mechanized units leading the charge and mobile infantry providing support from the sides. Power Armor units with close quarters and heavy weapons will be ordered to enter the tunnels and begin flushing out the bugs for easier killing. Capture of brain bugs and queens is option. Victory will be assured.

The UNSC's formations in space or on the ground? Honestly, both don't really matter in the grand scheme of the human-covenant war. In space, human ships are so outclassed (three human ships of equal tonnage equal one covenant ship) that it doesn't much matter what they did. The human fleet is also outnumbered six-to-one by the Covenant Empire. On the ground, the planets are just glassed. Maybe 1/20 planets are invaded instead of glassed, and even then, it's by Covenant forces so numerically superior and with so many advantages against human forces with no hope of resupply or reinforcement. Only on Reach and Earth formations really matter.

Yeah, but the book also unironically tries to advocate for a system of government which basically amounts to fascism wearing the skin of democracy. The film spoofs that by making human society openly fascist and makes the human leadership incompetent in a way which reflects the reality of authoritarian regimes in which ideological loyalty is prized over merit and competance.

This is actually addressed in the book. Sure, they could just nuke the surface, but the bugs are subterranean, so there would be little point to it. Later on they create the Nova Bomb which can crack the planet itself. But by then they suspect that the bugs might hold hostages on Klendathu, so they don't dare use it during the second invasion.

I think it’s quite important to remember, the Federation doesn’t have any “tanks”. Closest they have are Stryker like vehicles. The entire purpose of the Mobile Infantry is to attack quickly, then withdraw in lighting strike formation. Paul Verhoven, as much as I love his rendition of Starship Troopers, didn’t read the book. He said as much himself. Hence why this invasion seems very strange.

I've played the game Starship Troopers Terran Ascendancy. It captured the feel of the movie quite faithfully. It even has the panic mode button in the squad formation options. Click on it and your high-disciplined, heavily-armed and armored veteran troopers would re-enact the first Klendathu invasion scene. I wonder if they deliberately add the panic mode in just to mimic the movie even more by making the player accidentally give the wrong order to his team when surrounded by Arachnid swarms.

Interesting video. In the book, the Mobile Infantry got their butts kicked in Klendathu too. IIRC, it was a classic case of superiority complex, with the humans thinking they could just show up and win. Then they realized that Klendathu looked so primitive from space because the bugs built everything underground. After the huge defeat, they went to hit and run tactics and raided enemy planets. It wasn't until they led a successful raid underground that the war began to turn for humanity.

A large fleet comprised entirely out of Missle platforms/ Carriers (the ships will have duel function, so once again only one class of ship) 2: use the missiles to completely nuke the planet 3: use fighters to destroy any fleeing ships 4: use transports on the Carrier to unload an army onto the planet that will kill any survivors. Yeah, I'd like a genuine Starship Troopers adaptation of the book for movie format. Not what we got. It had a lot of good philosophy in it that, even if flawed in some way, gets one thinking about alternative ways to organize society and handle problems at both the individual and collective levels. All of Heinlein's books are like that, such as "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", which even discusses alternative sexual lifestyles not just alternative social orders (and rebellion against existing social orders). Heinlein's writings were as much science fiction as philosophical discussions of alternatives for... everything! The Starship Troopers book deserves a movie that deals with the heart of what Heinlein and his stories were, not... what we got.

Not to mention the insane idea that the bugs could somehow launch an asteroid from across the galaxy with such pinpoint precision that it could not only hit the earth, but hit a major population center. The bugs are good, but they're not THAT good. The more likely scenario is that the Federation had already known about an inevitable asteroid strike coming towards Earth, and did nothing about it so they could blame it on the bugs to justify the invasion. Also note that in the opening propaganda reel, the narrator says that the Earth has upgraded its planetary defenses to protect against further asteroid strikes, but later in the film (but before the Buenos Aires disaster) you can clearly see the moon's planetary defense guns on the spacedock around the Roger Young. So they not only let the asteroid hit, they had the capacity to blow it up before it got close, but chose to do neither.

@mortman200
@mortman200 6 жыл бұрын
The bugs didn't fire the asteroid. It was inevitably going to hit the earth, and had probably been on a collision course for eons. The Roger Young said that the asteroid came from Klendathu, but again, that's on the other side of the flipping galaxy. They might as well have pointed out the window and said "it came from that direction" for all the good it would do to get an accurate assessment of the asteroid's origin.
@MasterX25
@MasterX25 6 жыл бұрын
It is impossible to shoot anything across the galaxy full stop unless your Omniscience. The projectile, even at light speed would take hundreds of thousands (if not millions at minimum) of years to reach the other side. Without Omniscience, It's impossible to account for all the possible gravitational pull that will make the asteroid go off course, missing the target.

I just read the book. Is better in the book, the MI are dropped in pods that have 3 layers and other systems that will bombard the enemy when the pods break. In addition there are a lot of empty drop pods. The book is clearly outdated but it wants to say that a super soldier is better than a tank, when you have tactical nukes you want your army spread and mobile. They were supposed to secure a "beach head" and they did but the reinforces landed off. The tight formation was meant to reduce the spread and the error from landing distance. Other thinks worked poorly, the canine division committed suicide, almost all. They were arrogant, and the management push ahead even when it was clear that the mission failed. It is implied later that the bugs played a part in the Humans miss management.

Part II: the weakness was found after the battle, at least in the book, special bombs were created to destroy the enemy. MI standard distance was 1.8 kilometers between soldiers, in this operation was less. MI costumes in the book pretty much have super powers and speed, radars , automated turrets mounted in the shoulder, 2 kinds of flamethrowers and the list go on. The movie was film too soon, it needed the avatar budget to follow the book
