Windsurf Tuto #1 How (not) to waterstart in strong wind in 2 '

Well Done 👍 Be proud. ...2 minutes is still good in such conditions and you didn’t get slammed once you got up 👍 My tips:- Don’t Rush it, Relax a little, catch your breath when in the water & get your bearings on where the wind is coming from. You can then rotate your kit gradually to the right angle before you raise the rig! This will prevent the rig from being RIPPED out of your hands! Time it using a wave if possible to help fly the rig into the air. If you get separate from your rig, DON’T HESITATE swim for it instantly!!!!! 1 in 10 situations the rig will land on the board in such a way that it will be off down wind before you know it!!! In such strong conditions & being knackered you COULD have a BIG swim on your hands to reach it!!!! Always QUIT while you’re ahead. Head for the beach when you’re getting tired, then look back at the water & be proud your a hardcore sailor. Then go again tomorrow 👍

Good video! I love that the wsurf community is supporting you and giving advises! I also have been there and still some days it feels hard! Let’s try wind helping you rather than fighting with it, sail first and biard later (with feet if possible)! Good luck for more windy days
@nicolasdidier38212 жыл бұрын
The scoop of the board in such strong wind was that you had few second between sail préparation and board catching with back foot.
@bobisrighturwrong3 жыл бұрын
Ignore the board. Get the sail steady and low. THEN hold the boom close to the mast and reach out and right the board. Usually I can right the board with my feet but that takes long legs and practice - meaning lots of failures.
@shmish3 жыл бұрын
Me two weeks ago. Wave and wind flipping the board over. I feel your pain at 0:59. Speed is the key and I think to try and keep some pressure in the sail as you move it up out of the water to keep pressure on the mast foot. I think lifting the mast close to the boom without pulling on the boom allows the board to lift up.
@nicolasdidier38213 жыл бұрын
Yes had the same issue with that board in very strong wind n Tarifa that was always flipping the board not easy to manage. Yes speed would help maybe also trying kind of downwind waterstart to avoid the wind on the n'ose of the board.

Very good. I would say 'how to' rather than how not to, considering there are very few options when it is that windy. You were literally pinned, very good technique to stay with the kit, keep at it, ring the changes like let the rig flip if it wants to, then get going quickly as soon as the wind is controllable! Nice!

Oh man I love this video My second week of waterstarting it was gusting to 35mph and my board was not handling the waves/chop well because of the higher volume and I spent a lot of time fussing around in waves, board flipping, to get going again. Not THIS bad but man I feel it
@nicolasdidier38213 жыл бұрын
aeroegnr yes can become difficult waterstart in such conditions.
@rorycarter65673 жыл бұрын
How do you stop the clew of the sail sinking as you try to fly the sail, this is my current annoyance with waterstarting
@nicolasdidier38213 жыл бұрын
Rory Carter look at 1’05” front hand on the mast an back hand on the boom. Also what is key and not visible is swimming with your leg and push the mast to get some wind in the sail. Do not hesitate to use lifejacket at the beginning it helps as well.
@andrewradley78543 жыл бұрын
If I was water starting port tack i would have my right hand on the back strap and left hand on the mast above the boom mount. Pull the mast out of the water and over the board but dont pull it too high over the board or the clew will stick and the wind might fill the sail and flip out of your hand. Keep it close to the board. Pull the mast/sail across and close to the board until the clew is released from the water. When you ready to grab the boom with your back hand do so lightly as your back hand is the accelerator and if pulled too quick will result in the sail getting pulled out of your hands. So go lightly and keep your body low as you come out of the water with knees bent.

Mate I feel so sorry for you, been there done that it’s not fun it’s tiring and you feel like shit by the end of it and when you give up with the waterstart and up hauling becomes the logical option after that and then that goes pear shaped. All in all it’s just such a difficult situation to be in especially when you have the sail flipping back and forth because it doesn’t want to fly across the wind but I hope you got out ok 👍
@nicolasdidier38214 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your understanding of such situation when you feel a very alone. Finally I could make it this day and there is another video with some windsurf this very strong windy day. These 2 minutes lasted very long and I was very close to give up.
