Amazing! thank you! you are first professional who paid full attention to this very important subject (if not the most). Every surfing session is hundreds of fails into water, so good and productive waterstart can safe huge amount of time and energy. and despite on it there are only few videos how to do waterstart with big sails.

That was a very clear and precise description of a waterstart and although I'm a long term and experienced Windsurfer both the improvements to the boards and sails have also made actions like that more simple to learn and practice confidently.

I suggest to adjust the height of the boom at the mast so that the boom can sit on the boards tail. When swimming then you just push the boards tail under the boom and the buoyance of the board pushes the sail out of the water. You only need to control the mast with one hand somit does not flip over

Wow really nice video for showing the thought process and details of waterstarting. A good intermediate video for people who understand the basics of the waterstart but need to improve it. That tip of getting the leech of the sail inbetween the footraps was great. Sometimes I really need to fight my equipment to get it in position. I usually try to push through the mastfoot to get the board to rotate around the fin; but this can be extremely frustrating if the rail is digging in or the board doesn't want to turn. Will try putting the leach between the foot straps. My personal tip - If you are going to fall and you have enough control to choose how you fall then: 1. Fall backwards (windward) to be in position to waterstart GOING THE SAME DIRECTION 2. Drop the sail forwards (leeward) to be in position to waterstart GOING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. If you can help it, it is better to drop the sail in front of you while falling backwards to avoid falling onto your rig. I have even fallen backwards with my back foot still on the board to be ready to waterstart instantly when a gust comes.

Nice video if u r in strong wind u can waterstart to the foot straps and I found another way to water start small slalom sail u need the cams upside down and put the sail on the tail of the board so that the sail Is almost out of the water allredy ( I managed to do it with 6,4 and 5,7 I tried with 4 cam 7,8 it was really hard but maybe it can be done by bigger man)
@RYTISJAS

Yes, putting the sail on the tail definitely helps to keep it slightly out of the water!

ok so Im learning to waterstart with limited equipment. I got an oldschool 330cm long 60wide slalom board with an arrows sail which is amazing to me considering the 2nd time i figured out how to stay on it and had an awesome ride in medium conditions yesterday. My problem is the board is very unstable and though I practised the movement in head and I think I know how to do it the end of the board sinks so either I put my foot on the side or at the end where the footstraps are it either flips over or the bottom sinks, respectively. The latter just raises the front and the whole board gets out of control. Shall I try to manage to put my foot right where the mastfoot is since theres the center of balance? or shall I move the mastfoot more to the front where the widest the board is? Its almost impossible to balance on it without the straps but the ones which i use to balance on the board are on the farther side so with waterstarting it seems impossible to reach. I tried to describe the situation, I hope you got it. Any help?

I'm a beginner with cam sails, but I see that when wind is enough it's relatively easy to pull the sail out of the water. Do you have any advice when the wind is very low instead? I always struggle a lot to pull the sail up and keep it out of the water (I sink). Is it better to use the rope then?
@RYTISJAS
@RYTISJAS 3 жыл бұрын
Either use uphaul if the board is floaty enough or you have to swim to the very very top of the mast and lift it from there.

Got any gear recommendations for a national team sailor who just started windsurfing? I've been using a 144L starboard carve, with a friends severne code red 7.5 and a 7.0 NP freeride. I can plane, and be in the straps pretty confidently. I still cannot jibe or confidently water start. I have as much access as I want to the 7.0 NP freeride and all of starboards carve boards from 111 - 144. Actually the most fun board we have at the club is an ancient Go board which according to the others down there is a special version of the go where they one year just redesigned the race series a bit... it is by far the fastest I've tried of all the boards there. For light wind I just practice on mistral or kona... What would make sense for me to buy myself? Are used sails a thing in surfing or a no go? How does monofilm age? I'm 80kg but went up 7kg since january and expect to stay steady around 85-90kg. 195cm tall. I sail from Vedbæk, Denmark

Hi mate, Well the most important question is what type of windsurfing do you want to do? Slalom racing? Freeride or perhaps freestyle?
@ScrattleGG
@ScrattleGG 4 жыл бұрын
@@RYTISJAS well I've been doing freeride I suppose at the moment as that is what my club has for gear. I don't think conditions where I am are great for slalom so I'll probably be in some freeride but as close to slalom as I can get with a bit of chop

what is the diff between slalom and regular sail? size? im trying to learn waterstart on my 12' board 6.5m sail with fiberglass mast.
@RYTISJAS
@RYTISJAS 4 жыл бұрын
Slalom sails are heavier due to having 4 cams and they have a wide mast sleeve where water can come in. These things make waterstarts a lot harder

Rytis (or anyone else), can you give any tip for waterstarting with very short board (230 cm)? I am new to these boards and I find it very akward waterstarting with it because of the distance you have to the Board. On old freeride boards the board is closer to your body and it is much easier. Thx for any advice 🤙

What part of the waterstart exactly are you struggling with? Lifting the sail above your head? Controlling the board position once you are holding the sail? Getting your foot up on the board? Standing up on the board once the foot is on?
