ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Within this video I talk about how often you should be training to increase your vertical jump and dunk a basketball. Is it one time per week? Two? Three? What if I'm doing strength training? What if I'm doing only plyometrics? I'm going to do my best to answer all of those questions in this video.

First I want to say I think people should train Abs/Core daily because I feel the muscles in that region recover the fastest, even if you go somewhat intense in that department. Now, I think you are right about intense weight-training where if you are using weights above let's say 50% of your 1 Rep Max then I think the joints especially need 1-2 days rest at least(especially to avoid injury). Now Plyos, if you are doing them intensely with many sets of a good amount of exercises, I think maybe 1 day rest is sufficient. With that said, if someone is doing a "Maintenance" routine(this can be a mix of any fitness categories) with light-moderate intensity to keep their body warmed up and loose, then I think it's acceptable to train this type of routine every day because this amount of stress will heal faster.
@ultim8fight3r97
@ultim8fight3r97 5 жыл бұрын
I train 7 days per week usually, sometimes I take a day off. But 2 of those days, usually Monday and Tuesday is a "Maintenance Express" routine. Basically I do less exercises, all bodyweight, less sets, and in somewhat HIIT fashion. It's about a 15-20 minutes workout. The other 4-5 days I do a thorough full session with more exercises and sets, and these last usually around 2 hours.
@NathanaelMorton
@NathanaelMorton 5 жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely right my man. On everything you said. Abs can be trained every single day for the reasons that you explained. Plyos as well. The only time I need to rest is after heavy training to failure. I’m going to need to come to you for some advice on calisthenics lol. I want to get into that more than I am now.

hi bro, I have a question, my routine consists of heavy Mondays, including squats, deadlifts, power clean, hip thrust and plyometric exercises at the end (death jump, Squad jump and sprint), Wednesday jump training and Friday the same as I do Monday but little weight and I focus on speed. I also add single leg exercises Monday and Friday. Is that vertical jump training plan okay?

I train plyometrics m-w-Fri with Tues as my strength leg day (weights). So 4 in total. Fri or sat is my push up day with 150 pullups/chin ups, 300 pushups with core 4sets x 20reps 3 circuits. Weighted Calves (Gastrocnemius) and seated calves (Soleus) 3 times a week reps4x30 in three different stances, and I use a thick ass trade comic book on the seated. I use a 20k vest, 17.5k Dumbbell and 10kplates at home. All workouts are 1hr.

My Routine (Every M/F): Dynamic warmup 2 sets of 10 elevated glute bridge extensions 5 sets of 8 jump squats (with 17.5 lb dumbbells) and resistance bands 5 sets 6 180 jumps 5 sets of 6 bulgarian split squat jumps (each leg) 4 sets of 10 bulgarian split squats (each leg) (with 20 lb dumbbells, 40 lbs total) I've been at it for a few months now and have definitely seen a lot of progress, but with quarantine haven't been able to do much strength training. Is doing this workout twice a week enough? At what point will I need to advance? A bit difficult without getting into the gym, but I'm still consistently sore (but never overly).

What do you think about my training routine? train individual basketball skills during 5am from mon to fri, about 30-50 mins, during Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays I do group training (so like conditioning and some basic team drills) for about 1-2 hours. Sunday is my rest day, no basketball or anything sports-related. I try to play at least 2 pick-up games per week, where I go all-out and test the skills I practice. And apart from that, I do plyometrics twice per week with 2 days in between so I get enough rest. I also do a full-body weightlifting but only once a week. I try to not neglect warm-ups like stretching and cool-downs like resistance band exercises.

Would love to hear your thoughts & suggestions on how often to train (plyo and/or strength) in addition to my regular routine which is as follows: - Tuesdays & Thursdays: 2-hours of Bball clinics and live work (handling, footwork, and finishing work followed by live 2v2 and 3v3 work incorporating what we drilled) - Saturdays: 2-hours of organized games - Keep in mind I'm a middle-aged dude, so I'm trying to be realistic about what's feasible while also avoiding injury. I'm a little under 6'4" with a shit vertical, so I'm really only looking to add 3-4 inches of vertical and gain some explosion to round out my game. Thanks in advance and keep cranking out the helpful vids!

I would do 2-3x per week of power/strength work. If anything, 1 day power/strength, 1 day plyo/strength. Keep them lower volume high intensity. 3-4 exercises that you’re trying to progressive overload each time

I do upper body strength and leg-power (4 sets, 4 reps of 90% 1RM Trap Bar jumps and 4 sets, 4 reps explosive Lunges with heavy weight) on wednesday morning. I do Upper Body strength and Leg-Plyo (4 sets 4 reps of high object touches and 4 sets 4 reps of depth jumps) on saturday morning. I need about 2 more inches to dunk. How can I optimize my vert gains? I'm willing to do as much as possible.

Ay a quick question. If my workout is mixed with exercises of plyo, bodyweight and resistance bands should I stay at two times a week or try the three times. Right now I have a little knee injury where I can't do the full range of motion for spikes in volleyball or even things like knee, depth jumps etc. But after I recover well I wanted to try training my vertical three times a week. If you feel good then it should be fine. Just make sure to take your sleep seriously, and stretch every day for at least 10 minutes. Any time that you feel drained or especially tired, I would 100% skip a workout and use it as a rest day. Taking a deload week every 4 weeks where you focus on isometrics instead of true weight training would also be very beneficial. Thanks for the comment!

Today was another full session, but for the Jump part I only did a fraction of what I did yesterday so only a few exercises(just Body Squats, Bulgarian SS, and Tuck Jumps) and only 1-2 sets, sort of a "Maintenance" part just for the legs, within a full routine if that makes sense.

So i can’t work my squat and deadlift. But i play basketball everyday, intense. Does my vertical going to be decrease ? Im sorry with my bad grammar cause im not an english speaker. Big up

Hey man I’m a Volleyball player. Since it’s quarantine I was planning on doing a light lift(also All I have in weights is two plates of 25 pounds) in the morning and later in the day I do a vert workout. I wanted to do this every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. What are your thoughts on that???
@NathanaelMorton
@NathanaelMorton 4 жыл бұрын
Hey brother - I would combine them. I would do them both at the same time, vert first and then weights, then I would rest later in the day. If you do one in the AM and one in the PM, your muscles will get less recovery even though you're targeting vert once and strength/hypertrophy in the other. Try it and see if you like, but consolidating them into one workout and then resting at night would be optimal for recovery and therefore optimal for results. Monday Wednesday Friday is good. If you really want something to do later in the day, do some stretching or an upper body workout!

Monday Wednesday Friday is the best plan to stay fresh. Make one of those days a "Dunk Day" where you practice touching the rim off of each approach (Right Foot, Left Foot, Two foot right left, Two foot left right) and dunking tennis balls if you can.

Is it possible to increase vertical jump while also doing a strength and hypertrophy program? I lift weights 4x per week and try to include some plyos and explosive moves into these and also play basketball 2-3x per week. I feel really slow and not explosive though. Can I become more explosive and eventually dunk while keeping up my hypertrophy program?
@NathanaelMorton
@NathanaelMorton 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely. The main issue is that hypertrophy is focused on by moving the weights very slowly and getting that time under tension. Vertical is increased by moving weights fast and explosively. Those are two different muscle fiber types that you are working. However, vertical jump has two pieces to the puzzle. One piece is strength and the other is speed of movement. Hypertrophy can definitely get you the strength aspect. For speed of movement, plyometrics like you are doing will help, OR the best case scenario would be to add some speed sets or even a speed day into your hypertrophy split. Add an extra set or two at the end of EACH EXERCISE (which can get high in volume) and move the weights fast. Or, sacrifice a hypertrophy day for a speed day (or add a speed day and do a 5-day split). Hope this helps. Nate

Check this video I just posted - it explains a lot: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eJuFZ9GJ0bK6dJc.html You DO need strength training, and you can get a very high vertical without ever doing squats. Deadlifts are a better movement than squats anyways due to the movement pattern!

@WestonWolkov
@WestonWolkov 4 жыл бұрын
Jacob Applebaum I would personally say on the same day. I think doing your plyos after ur warmup but before your lifting is a great way to activate your nervous system and when you start lifting you will feel really warm and explosive. It could make ur workouts longer though, so if you don’t want that I would say do plyos tues/thurs or tues/sat and take the remaining 2 days off. Sprinting can improve vert so including it could definitely be beneficial - but I would say only do 1-2 days of sprints not 3. Just my opinions, but hope that helps.
