I know this is an old post. But just wanted to point out that if you are donating less than a dollar, your charity is probably losing money to process the transaction. This is a great trick but you should use it it on organizations that you do NOT want to support not ones you want to give to. See if you can find a way to pay facebook $0.25 and then you have something.

Hi Sebastian. One way that I use to keep the card active is to do auto-payment for things like donations which you can put smaller amounts per month. Doing this also makes it easier to put your financing easier for tax season for your donations.

I had a Shell Gas Card for 23 years. I did not use it for due to the higher price they charged for gas in CA. One day out of the blue they cancelled my card. No warning. The next oldest card card I had was 15 years. My credit score took a multiple point dive due to credit aging. Wish I had seen this video last year. I would have used my Shell card for gum also. Chevron sent me a letter warning me about low usage so I bought a soft drink at one if their stations. Good to go.

Hi Sebby, I also keep a card book like yours but with RFID protection I cycle about 20 cards from it and I normally will carry about 4 on my person and cycle them every 2 weeks. Eventually I will go thru all of the each quarter. When traveling I have about 4 favorites with high reward and limits benefits the rest are used for everyday small spending. (Use like a debit card) Beside having them all on auto pay I use an excel sheet to keep track of my spending so I don’t pass higher than 3% ever and help me keep track of my spending.

I didn’t even know this was a thing. Luckily where I’m from people don’t seem to go sneaking up behind me with an RFID scanner to snatch my card details. If they did I would knee them in the face and do a 360 power spin hook punch to KO them, probably.

You can also have your monthly cell bill, auto insurance and monthly road toll bill sent to three different cards. Use the remainder of your cards to buy gasoline, groceries, dry cleaning or pay for car washes. It is stuff you have to pay for regularly, might as well get some points or cash back from them. Also make sure you pay off these cards the first and the 15th of every month. It helps your credit and keeps your cards alive.

As a grocery store clerk, I can say he's not quite on the money but he's close. Cashiers want to stay busy in some respect because otherwise the day drags on, so if it's slow at the store (and you're polite) then most cashiers will be okay with doing split transactions this way.

I use the amazon method. I also am more concerned about credit card companies "posting" to my account every month so I add 50 cents ever month on any card i haven't used. I watched a video where they said if you don't use it at all they just don't post anything. while no posts won't hurt you, they said that a 50 cent post will help. I have seen my score jump up a lot but i have been doing other things to my credit as well so its hard to say if its actually working

Mostly i’ll only have cards for specific uses, so they’ll always be autopaying my bills for specific things or i’ll just be using them anyways. I think of situations like this all the time when getting cards and I don’t want ones that just sit around, so I’ll probably limit myself to at least 8-10 cards.

The primary cards I use are the Amex Green and Gold cards (fairly new to both), and a Navy Federal Flagship Rewards Visa card, but I have a Discover card, a Mastercard and the Amex EveryDay card that will be more idle. I thought about dropping the EveryDay card but have had that for 13 years and I figure there is no advantage in dropping it. Anyway, I have very small recurring charges going to the EveryDay card and the Mastercard and hope that is enough. The Amazon idea sounds better though than the recurring charges approach. I figure I will use the Discover card enough because of their rotating 5% categories. I ended up putting the EveryDay card and the Mastercard in my travel bag along with Passport card (for use as a RealID) to use in event I lose my wallet.

Ironically, I actually do get compensated for CO cards (www.asksebby.com/credit-card-offers/) but I just don't want to recommend people non-optimal cards. By all means, they're fine, there's just better options and strategies based on the metagame. Chase is typically recommended first, due to it's 5/24 rules. On a side note, I would HAPPILY recommend cards that add value (i.e., FNBO TravElite card) even if I don't get compensated. CO is fine if you need a foot in the door, but the value is relatively fixed. Most of the cards are also non-optimal. A big part of that is that they're targeting subprime borrowers so have less rewards and basic reward structures (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/asWFdtarnbHWdWg.html).

Sebby, I have a very interesting question to ask (in my opinion). I've noticed that Citi Prestige has come out with a 75k Bonus if you spend 7,500 in the first three months. I am just wondering, If I already have the CSR.... is it still possible to come out ahead by getting the Citi Prestige. (Also, planning American Express Platinum if the bonus comes up again). I actually think it might be possible because 450 - 250 (travel credit) - 100 (Global Entry).... but that still leaves $100 annual fee but I am taking in to account the 75k to cover that portion. The second portion of this problem is, without losing your points or the timeframe to use them would it be possible to downgrade afterwards to the Citi Thankyou Premier Card and keep all the points. The reason I ask is the Citi Thankyou Premier Card is having a 50k Bonus offer for only 4k spend and the first year annual fee is waived. It almost seems like you would come out ahead with this card over the prestige. Your expertise and insight would be greatly appreciated thanks a bunch. If possible please reply or even better make a video highlighting this.

@danielb3863

CaradhrasAiguo49 For large purchases such as extra food for the holidays etc. etc etc off Amazon. Not stuff like electronics. Plus you can use Amazon GC balance to buy prepaid cards such as Xbox Live and PlayStation Network cards. They both get hacked so much that prepaid cards is the way to go.

I'm not a fan of financing unless it's an item that has a high likelihood of yielding you income (i.e., you're a professional photographer expanding into a different industry like wedding photography and need a specific lense).

Any idea how this works for authorized users? Wife and daughters have a card that draws from my account but obviously unique card numbers. I would assume it’s just the account itself that needs periodic activity, but thought I’d ask to see if each user needed to stay active as well. Any idea?

Do you think the bank would close a secured credit card? Technically, it's your own money, but I just wanted to know your thoughts on that. I find myself "forgetting" about my secured card, just because I have so many other, better cards now. Yet, it's my longest reporting one.

They won't graduate it to unsecured?
@ImmunityMuzik
@ImmunityMuzik 6 жыл бұрын
Ask Sebby no. All they did was give me an extra $300 unsecured on that line. It's through Capital One. They are weird. I've asked several times to get it as unsecured completely, and they won't. They suggest me closing the card and just opening an unsecured line. Pretty irrelevant, to do all that.

ImmunityMuzik that's Capital One for you. My first credit card was a QS1 $300 limit @ 25.99 APR. They refused to grow with me so I closed it in September and immediately applied and approved for the Venture. Starting limit was 12k. Seems to me their system will always keep you in the box you start with.

If I pay off the $0.50-$1.00 transaction before the closing statement does it still register as activity to keep the account "active" or do I have to wait until it goes through the closing cycle? Thanks again for the video and great ideas!

@@hareshbsingh However, I think it is better to wait for the statement and then pay so you have more on-time payments reflected in your credit history, but if that does not matter to you, you can decide what to do.

Keeping cards you really don't use active is very important if you have less than $50,000 of available credit, had any late payments in the last seven years or if there is a Chapter #7 BK which stays on your credit for 10 years.If you close a card with a high limit in relationship to your total combined limit and a card you have had a long time you can do some damage and it takes 6 to 9 months for it to recover based on the algorithms.

If you spend say 99 cents and the cc issuer doesn't put it on the statement, does it still count as a purchase to keep your card active?

I am in The process of that if they change the CSR, now I would still keep it. Personally, I think now these cards should be made limited Edition. And a new CSR Should be made for The Balance people, that is more comparable to the Other cards like the Citi Prestige and Amex Platinum. Sorry I wasn't on more I was on a cruise to the Caribean, the week before last. I went to 4 islands, The ship is a great place to exercise and lose weight and is very clean. If you and Mandy haven't done a cruise, I suggest you just try it once, just to have done it. :)
