The Sacklers are among the richest families on Earth. At one point they were worth at least 13 billion dollars. Their company, Purdue Pharmaceuticals, is responsible for the opiate painkiller Oxycontin-which represented 80% of their business-and is nearly entirely responsible for the opioid addiction epidemic crushing America today. The company pleaded guilty to related charges in federal court twice.
You probably already know how corrupt the Sacklers are: books, documentaries, congressional hearings, an entire acted-out Hulu miniseries. They’ve been sued by 48 out of 50 states, their names have been removed from buildings. Everyone on Earth seems to get it: The Sacklers are largely to blame for a drug crisis that’s killed half a million people.
And yet The Sacklers still have a ridiculous amount of money and will likely never face any change in the extreme comfort of their lives.
They pursued endless capital accumulation over public health and they got away with it by exploiting byzantine corporate and financial law to hide their wealth and allying with the very people who were supposed to be regulating them.
This is how the Sackler family got rich.

When AOC said maybe we should have a maximum wage, I blew it off as just talking. But the more I see how much damage is done to all of us by unlimited income in limited hands, the more rational I think she is. Why should the vast majority of us be ruled by the whims and desires of a relatively few obscenely greedy narcissists?

Yes, and destroyed many lives. I have two broken vertebrae and was told OxyContin is “safe and effective” When doctors panicked and I was put out on the street, I went to rehab, when I relapsed I ended up with a felony (I had never been in trouble prior, it was for possession only) and a year in jail. Now, I can’t find a job, even though I’d been clean 7 years and I have a college degree (I was a few classes/ credits away from an MBA), and my brain took a long time and psychedelics to somewhat recover. I will never live the life I could’ve lived, I will never be the person I intended and worked hard to be.... so, yeah, where is our amends? Even from society? The government?

I was on OxyContin for years until it wasn’t enough to stop the pain and they moved me to morphine. After 3 spinal surgeries my pain was substantially reduced and I weaned off of the 300 mg of morphine I was taking every day, it’s sucked and I had really bad insomnia for almost three months but I got off of it and help down a full time job at the same time. OxyContin is an outstanding pain medication, it just works and the controlled release works very well.

I have had 18 orthopedic surgeries including 6 spinal fusions, both cervical and lumbar, and I took 300 mg of morphine every day once OxyContin wasn’t strong enough. After my 12th surgery my pain was reduced enough that I took myself off morphine and man that sucked, 8 weeks of only getting 2-3 hours of sleep a night while working a full time job was hell. This was in 2012, then in 2014 everything changed literally overnight, the hydrocodine I had been take was moved to a C-2 drug along with morphine & oxy and as I got older the spinal issues came back and they will not give me OxyContin anymore because of all the assholes abusing it and I have a perfect 22 year history of using opioids without a single issue ever, never ran out early and never “lost” my scripts and never took more than I was prescribed but non of that matters. Now they have stopped giving you an injection of pain meds when you come out of surgery for acute pain which is so fucked up, orthopedic surgery is extremely painful as they are cutting, sawing & drilling and screwing shit into you and they won’t give you an IV injection because they think you are going to get addicted? I have heard people yelling & screaming in pain begging for an injection that would knock the pain out in seconds but all they gave was 30mg of OxyContin for post surgical pain and that’s bullshit because it takes 30 minutes before you even start to feel it and you are in really bad pain until it does.

The individual doctors who prescribe this junk need to be open to lawsuits, if their patients get addicted. After I fractured 5 vertebrae, I was in extreme pain. I went to a doctor, who despite my saying "I don't want Oxy", tried to push it on me. I decided to deal with the pain; and he continued to try to give me this garbage, in subsequent visits. I was on Mëthadone for a decade. Recently found krätom & it's been the only thing that's worked for me, to get off opïates! I highly recommend it, but there's potential for WD & dependence in some. I'm one of the lucky ones who doesn't get WD from it, so it's been a life-saver in many ways! Disclaimers, rarely some people have a liver issue where they can't metabolize krätom, so it can cause serious issues, once you stop taking it tho those should resolve. If you have heart issues or a seizure disorder, also use caution with krätom. There have been rare cases of seizures in those who had preexisting seizure disorders, usually after they ingested wayyy too much, tho. So as long as you're generally healthy, you should def try it for pain management! It's been a life saver for those like me who wanted to get off opïates! I've lost 8 friends - that I know of 😭 - since 2014 to opïate OD. If prescribed wisely Oxycodon can be very helpful. After my hipreplacement surgery, I got prescribed maximal paracetamol, a drug combatting nerve pain and oxycodon when needed. I used 1 oxycodon for example half an hour before physical therapy. In this way pain did not limit my therapy, which sped up my recovery. Also when at some time I was in a lot of pain again, I did not get an oxy but the cooled the surgery area. After release from the hospital after 2 nigths, I got a prescription for a limited amount (I used only half of it) but used paracetamol sligthly longer. I was informed that it was potentially addictive. My physical therapist also checked if I was still using painkillers. Using it in such a way is very usefull and increases recovery. It is a shame that due to the marketing pressure to increase this druguse, a valuable drug could disappear.

@@okkietrooy6841 I have no doubt that when used properly, oxy can be useful. However, my issue lies with doctors who push it like a lifeline, for any kind of pain, regardless of it's severity. Many will take it exactly as directed, and end up addicted. Perdue was famous for giving doctors "bonuses", based on how many prescriptions they'd write. Got a toothache? Oxycontin. Sprained ankle? Oxycontin. Your doctor gets a free vacation, and you get hooked on something that your doctor gets paid to push on you.

@@buckyhate7695 I totally agree. I onkt reacted and told my story to show that oxycodon can be a very valuable drug if sensibly used. I know that in the USA it is normal to run ads for prescription drugs. Potentially leading to patients insisting on getting certain medication. When I lived in the USA (I am Dutch), I saw to my astonishment several commercials for a chemo therapeuticum. That is here unheard of. Doctors are also not allowed to let a pharnaceutical company pay for a luxurious hotel stay combined with an large sum of money for a presentation etc. Payments for cooperating with a scientific investigation have to be reasonable. I also expect that the insurance company will start asking questions if one family doctor prescribes far more than his peers. Our insurance companies are for profit but well regulated. For example they have to accept everybody. Rates have ti ve affordable. Their profits come from cutting costs. They keep an eye on the bills for medical procedures for example. If available a generic medication is first choice if available. In general we use less prescription drugs anyway. No antibiotics for a cold for example.

Yeah it's a really shitty lose-lose situation having chronic pain, either you get addicted to opioids or you're in pain all the time. I'm on methadone currently simply because I was homeless and couldn't get any pain management prescriptions because they'd assume I would abuse them so I had to opt for getting on methadone instead. It takes the edge off my nerve pain from an arm injury but it doesn't get rid of it entirely.

Had they bothered to spend 2 minutes talking to me they'd know that I have a high pain tolerance, I have literally never taken pain killers for anything besides a headache and that's a few times a year but most importantly I didn't want the prescription. I was already smoking and drinking. Last thing I needed was another vice. Luckily I took that prescription, ripped it up and threw it away almost immediately. Woke up the next day from extreme pain took 3 advil and was fine. Almost a decade later and I'm still shocked at how easily they just hand out opiods, like it's parade candy.

You have every right and reason to use them responsibly I disagree with them being prescribed to everyone without a care in the world, especially for people that are only going to have pain for a day or two. If you get into a car accident guess what it's going to hurt the next morning. It's fine to feel that hurt for a couple of days. It's your body telling you it needs to rest and heal. If you block out that pain with medication your likely to do more damage as instead of resting. Chronic pain is naturally very different and I don't feel comfortable discussing that as I've never dealt with it but I do understand people taking medication to help ease that pain. I honestly think that much money and power just tends to change people. I think about the Stanford Prison Experiment, where normal college students turned into ruthless prison guards over the course of the experiment. By all accounts, these were nice, average people…but the power changed them. I think that’s what happens to these people. You get to a certain level where you truly start to believe you are better than everyone, that you deserve what you have for this reason, and that is why it’s ok for you to bend the rules and do whatever you want, because you’re special. You begin to disassociate yourself from everyday people, and think of yourself as “not like them” and then preserving that lifestyle and that perception of yourself and the people around you becomes paramount. Ultimately, it’s a byproduct of their class interests. Since capitalism satisfies them and their material conditions, their conception/outlook on the world is changed to reflect that and reinforce them. (The proletariat can undergo a similar process, but the difference is they’re willing to overthrow this system to build one for themselves.) So in a way, I suppose one could say “yes” to your questions, but it’s important to note that capitalists like the Sacklers will _always_ be stuck in free market ideology. They adhere to the logic that capitalism demands of them (profits above all else) because if they didn’t, they’ll lose out to other capitalists in their corner of the market, and that’s a no-no in their playbook.

@@werbnaright5012 It’s an important distinction. My body uniformly has bad reactions to chemical trickery like left handed molecules and such. All the nutra sweet, nutra fat, and similar food substitutes give me head and stomach symptoms. Opioids do the same. Opiates work fabulously. I’ve been on a morphine drip a few times, and I need only tiny amounts. Like many of the other commenters here, it’s basic pain killers for me instead of those pills which will only give me more problems while doing little or nothing for pain. I have some other odd medical peculiarities, but being adopted, I have no family to compare with or I might be able to figure out a correlation.

This is a great video. Kudos. When some one is in severe pain opioids can provide relief - but pushing Oxy on a patient who doesn’t want it ? Greedy. Wrong. The business practices revealed from this video are sobering. I get a lot of relief from acupressure, reflexology, acupuncture, massage, aromatherapy. Sometimes the pain people feel is overwhelming and I can see why they turn to drugs. The legal ones and illegal ones.

If you never take an opioid you will never become addicted. If I was terminal and had bone cancer, I would probably take an opioid because of the pain. I've undergone three surgeries in my life and I was prescribed Oxycodone, I never filled the prescription because of my fear of addiction. I was a smoker and it was very difficult for me to quit smoking, I did not need another monkey on my back.

I have been in pain management for decades and NEVER had a “dirty pee”. But because of folks that steal meds from grandma and sell them to friends I have to be leashed to my RX bottle. Can’t leave state for a vacation might run out of meds. Even my Sister who suffers with STAGE FOUR BONE AND BREAST CANCER CANNOT GET THE HELP SHE NEEDS TO HAVE SOME KIND OF QUALITY OF LIFE!!! So thanks to all of you who continue to abuse meds. I know many of you and you are not allowed to pass my threshold!

Part of the problem is that there are some people who need these to live a normal life who don't get addicted to opioids and it would be unethical to take from them. Another weird thing is these anti-opioid prescription people who support indefinite methadone/suboxone maintenance. You can't have it both ways.
@peterkallend5012
@peterkallend5012 Жыл бұрын
Actually, you can have it both ways. You can be opposed to the idea of the default pain management prescription being an opioid pain med and also understand that it's been over prescribed for decades. Those who unwittingly got addicted because of the irresponsible and unethical policies pushed by pharmaceutical companies need to have access to potentially life saving meds as an intervention and help undo the damage that was done. Part of the real problem is people that don't think we can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Sadly, in addition to the overdose deaths, tens of thousands of addicted people have their lives ruined further by the failed drug war approach. Don't get people started on opioids. If they're on them, keep the supply known and therefore safer. Provide treatment, not incarceration. It's ultimately less costly and more humane. Great presentation and narration on this channel.

the UK's 'conservative' government (aka: tory) is well on the way to turning the tax payer funded national health service..NHS there over to 'for profit' firms. it has been selling it off piece by piece since 2010. At the same time it has cut the tax payer funds going to the NHS. these cuts have caused 30,000 'needless' deaths just in the last 2 years and that is ONLY deaths of folks with heart issues. An ambulance that used to arrive in an average time of 18 mins in 2010 when tory govt started latest term of government, now takes 58 mins. it is literally killing citizens by the 100s of thousands in order to steal the health service and hand it to its wealthy donors/friends. the UK still calls itself a 'democracy' not a 'kleptocracy'. regardless of labels the country is at war..but only the aggressor knows it. the UK media is almost 100% tory supporting (as its all owned by billionaires... friends of theirs), so, very few folks know they are being slaughtered as the media says NOTHING about these mass killings
