"You don't start a war with just 5 rockets" - Stanislav Petrov
@michaelfuchs1467
@michaelfuchs1467 2 жыл бұрын
You typically could start a nuclear war with ONE missile, carrying an ERW (Enhanced Radiation Warhead) which after detonation in the stratosphere creates a NEMP (Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse) which damages all electronics and power lines, which are not specially shielded, over a vast area - effectively blinding and confusing the target before the main strike which can come much later. Therefore, one single rocket launch can very well be acted upon with a full scale retaliatory strike. Google 'Black Brant Scare 95' and you'll see what is considered to be the closest call ever to a WWIII scenario. And pay special attention to that this happened long after 'the cold war' was considered to 'be over'.

And you don't end a war by glorifying the numbers of soldiers who are giving their lives around all of the rockets that they are being expected to fire on a constant basis while their leaders while always bribing bribing bribing as usual are always busy working 'just as hard' while continually vilifying the other side of the world as being with far less moral standing. Because stuff happens while doing so. While at the same time the Dali Lama whom some people out east are making the mistake of worshipping while he is being expected to shoulder too many decision making tasks goes down worrying himself sick on his couch while more and more not knowing what to do about it all.

No. He should have been court marshalled and much more servilely punished. His gut feeling could have also been a decapitation strike against Moscow and all the other big cities. 5 ICBM, in 1983 they would have been Trident I or Minuteman III, they would have been able to deliver up to 40 100kT(Trident I) or 15 300 kT(Minuteman III) warheads. That is enough to flatten every major soviet City and would have, due to the lack of warning, have killed most of the chain of command. It does not matter that he saved the world. He disobeyed direct orders, he put all of the lives at risk. Just assuming that only 5 ICBM would be not too bad is just wrong. Just 5 can destroy a country.

@@chickencooler5585 I guess you've never seen a Cold War targeting schematic which involves not only the US and the Soviet Union but NATO and Warsaw Pact countries as well. You must be young (not an insult). Any launch by either the the USA or USSR would automatically trigger launches by all other nuclear countries on both sides and pretty much obliterate the entire world except Antarctica. The world would be gone in less than a day. So, you should know that back then, everyone cared about the USA and the USSR

@@chickencooler5585 Although I am very glad to hear that current 21st century predictions aren't as dire, I was not talking about current nuclear arsenals or targeting. This situation occurred in the Cold War. I was pointing out Cold War targeting scenarios. The number of ICBMs have all but been eliminated from their Cold War abundance. I was an officer in the early eighties in U.S. Navy Special Warfare and I can tell you that in the Cold War, fall-out would not have been much of an issue because nearly every populated area in the world was directly targeted. Let me emphasize; Directly targeted. That Soviet Lieutenant saved the world.

I hope this video is still one of your favorites that you made. This was the first time I heard about this man, Stanislav Petrov, and the choice that was befallen upon him. I really wish things like those would be taught and discussed. I always found it fascinating that there are some videos on the internet that manage to capture your attention like this (be it because of the production, storytelling etc), each standing out in its own way, regardless if it was made by a smaller or a bigger creator or team, regardless of a subject that you may or not may be familiar with, and it’s genre (cars, music, history, geography, gaming you name it). For me, this video definitely goes into that category. I’ll leave this comment on other videos I find just as captivating as this one Thank you for making this video, it’s truly one of my favorites
