How do we get better? How do we help other people get better? Most advice on self improvement focuses on personal transformation. We believe that we need to change ourselves in order to get better. But what if this isn’t true? What if we don’t need to change ourselves? Maybe changing who we are isn’t as important as changing where we are. Maybe our environment is more important than our personality or our skills. Maybe the person isn’t as important as the place. This talk will show how a disruptive student, an armless archer, a German arm wrestler, and a company of autistic software testers discovered that, in the right situation, our weaknesses become strengths. David Rendall. Randall. Randell. Rendell. Reynolds. Whatever. No one knows how to pronounce his last name. David’s mission in life is to be hilarious and helpful. He’s a standup comedian with a doctorate in management; a class clown turned leadership professor, who went from disrupting classes to teaching classes and then disrupting companies and conferences from Portland to Paris to Pakistan. After being criticized and punished his whole life for being hyperactive, he now channels his frantic energy into competing in Ironman triathlons and ultramarathons. He wears more pink than the average middle-aged man. Well, actually, he wears more pink than an eight year old princess. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Couldn't agree more. So concise, warm and SO relatable! I have watched a lot of TED talks and very rarely does someone communicate as clearly and succinctly about their topic as this man did. Lots of great content by great minds, but sometimes their overall talk is not as engaging- but this was like an arrow to the mind and heart both.

ya have adhd soooo amazing, i forget to eat, i can't clean my room, i forget to brush my teeth, i don't finish any projects, depression, anxiety. being trapped inside my own brain unable to move or take care of my is such a super power. /sarcasm it is not cool to suggest that adhd meds are just 'druging you'. sure, maby meds aren't for everyone but it is harmful to say that adhd meds 'hindering everyone'.

If someone needs/ wants a weakness to be a hyper strength, cool good for them. Otherwise we don't have to be exploited/ use up every ounce of our being to always help others or earn extra dough or what not. American capitalist exploitative way of thinking/ being... life is too short trying to please others who are shallow and you'll never measure up if just trying to find validation

But seriously, interesting talk but let's think about it. Why would you focus on making your weaknesses your strengths? It's like trying to become a professional athlete when you're not coordinated at all. Good luck with that. What he's talking about is not "weaknesses" but finding what you're uniquely good at or adapted to and putting it to use. This is not a groundbreaking idea. It's called finding your signature strengths: what you are naturally good at and what you like to do.
