If there’s a message for me here, it’s that the encouragement of others need not have an obvious outcome by a particular age. This means that the nature and intensity of the support and encouragement need not be targeted at an outcome by a particular time or age. Mentorship is an important word and often incorrectly defined. A mentor doesn’t have an opinion about an outcome and certainly doesn’t push a mentee towards a favourited (by the mentor) outcome. The issue is not, “Should we ‘push’ others?”, it’s “How should we push somebody, especially somebody close to us, and who we ask to help us support that person?” So, Dean, the idea of a coach is very important because who is going to be that coach? For example, should a doctor treat their children or should they seek and follow the advice of another more dispassionate doctor…? And note, this has nothing to do with diminishing the value of loving, encouraging, passionate support for one’s kids 😊
