Each Round of the Playoffs each team would submit a cap compliant roster as a base roster. The are also allowed an injury reserve fund (I or 2 mil) and can change rosters for injuries. What this would mean for example is, Round 1 Vegas would submit a roster that is cap compliant. They are then allowed to tweak this roster but must still remain cap compliant. Making it a choice to start Stone and Hertl (dropping lower salaries somehow), or Stone or Hertl. They need to make this choice up front. From there if someone gets hurt, in the Stone or Hertl scenario they can replace the player with the other in order to stay cap compliant. The injured reserve would be used to give new contracts to AHL pull ups and remain cap compliant with those changes. This would also allow for some other interesting things like, play Stone in round 1 and Hertl in round 2. It also makes trading for these players more interesting (probably want to make it for the long term). At least that's how it might work from my mind. They have to make the Stone or Hertl choice up front in each round, and the only way out is injury. Which I'm sure there would be a lot of.
@PandaBearJelly
@PandaBearJelly 3 ай бұрын
To me the solution seems obvious. A hybrid cap for the playoffs. Your game night lineup has to be cap compliment but your full roster can exceed the cap so you can have backup options still. This means if Stone were to come back for the playoffs, the Knights would have to choose to dress someone like Hertl or Stone but wouldn't be able to fit both on the game day roster because it would be over the cap. They could alternate those players from game to game, or take out other players to fit both.

Yeah, put simply instead of a cap compliant roster like the regular season, you just need a cap compliant team each night in the playoffs. Maybe you see more ELC guys, maybe you play short to make it work? Could solve the issue with teams 20% over the cap getting the full crew all playoffs and bring us some interesting compromises.
@simonfarre4907
@simonfarre4907 Ай бұрын
No that's another stupid idea. There should not be any changes for the playoff. The cap is the cap and that's it. If your players get injured, well, get players that don't injure as easily. This is sports. At the very highest levels. Your attitude and the attitude of the league, is not sportsmanlike. Catering to the teams in the most weird ways. Unfortunately NHL has always fostered this non-sportsmanlike conduct as NHL has never had demotion as part of it's game (like the SHL in Sweden does, for instance). This would create real tangible threats to your existence in the league (but also pay itself off way more if you get demoted and come back). NHL tries every way to cheapen the game and I find that really sad. Imagine the world cup or the olympics - well some of our players were injured for team Sweden, so we went and got Ehlers from Denmark and Laine from Finland. It would be just as cheap.
@PandaBearJelly
@PandaBearJelly Ай бұрын
@@simonfarre4907 I'm not really sure what you mean by attitude lol. It's a solution that's based on the fact that owners and GMs still will want some flexibility in the playoffs. There's a reason the current system is in place. It's what they wanted. I agree, straight up enforcing the cap for the playoffs probably makes some sense but that's not likely to happen. At least a solution similar to what I put forward may be a compromise.

Players on LTIR cannot play in the playoffs unless they play in the final game of the regular season, meaning they are off LTIR and their salary counts toward the cap. There’s probably some loop hole around this method but I’d imagine it can be fixed. Edit: Alr I’ve changed my mind, a point that’s been brought up is that what if a player is truly injured and can’t play in the final game of the season. A simple solution is to just make the cap count in the playoffs, which doesn’t include the cap of players on LTIR, but once those players are eligible, they count towards the cap. Meaning that if teams try and stack up with an expensive player on LTIR, if they want him to play in the playoffs, they’re gonna run into some crazy cap troubles.
@simoncaton1226

This would effectively mean that you’re making the salary cap count for the playoffs anyway?? Since if they play the last game of the season, they could towards the cap. This is a good solution though. I like it in terms of closing the loophome

I really think the best answer would be that LTIR isn't included in the salary cap, but your active roster in the playoffs has to fit into the cap. Almost like, I don't know, the regular season? If an LTIR player returns for the playoffs, you have to healthy scratch players and mess around with rosters so that you're fielding a team on the ice that fits into the cap. If you want to buy players for the sake of filling a roster gap, go ahead. If the league really wants to keep this, make returning LTIR players miss the 1st round. I don't think I can have a neutral opinion on this though, being an Islanders fan and seeing this happen two straight seasons in a row against a Lightning organization abusing cap loop holes and going on to win back-to-back cups.

There's a simple solution: Teams in the playoffs should never be over the cap with the players they field in a single game. If someone comes back from the LTIR they will need to bench one or more players to fit the cap in their next game(s). Am I missing something? Also, just adjust the cap on a team basis based on the taxation in their respective locations. It doesn't seem that difficult to me at all, and I'm sure there are smart enough people running the show. The real question is what their motives are for not implementing these changes.

with injuries, you might end up having to ice a team thats over the cap, and most of the time, lineups only a few hours before game starts and theres game time decisions. in the playoffs theres a lot of injuries, having a cap rule in the playoffs doesnt make sense. but they should still not allow teams to use this loophole. i dont know how to solve it in the best interest of the players and the fans viewing. but that idea simply sounds like it would result in teams being disqualified in the playoffs over money issues cuz a team had the wrong guys get injured.
@MeccaVai519
@MeccaVai519 3 ай бұрын
its more likely a coincedence that a couple teams won the cup while being way over the cap then it is a result of using this loophole for one player to return from injury.. LITR is only for 2 players i think? its hard to say that exploiting this loophole is why teams have won. hockey is stilll a team game, otherwise mcdavid would have a handfull of cups by now

I think that one work around could be that in the playoffs you can have more players signed but ur only allowed to play within the cap or a little over. So rather than being able to acquire all kinds of new pieces and playing all the old ones as well you have to pick and choose who to play. This would mean that if a player is still injured throughout the playoffs he can be replaced but ur not getting a massive advantage by playing all the guys you acquired with their cap space while that player was on the LTIR.

Enforce a salary cap in the playoffs with a 10% increase. All teams have the flexibility to bolster the lineup or replace an injured star but aren’t able to add multiple large contracts. Contracts can be maximum 50% retained by the team dealing in the trade, 3 way retention is made illegal. Teams w/o LTIR will be forced to scratch players game by game to insert their acquisitions throughout the rest of the regular season, teams using LTIR space may or may not need to do the same. Activating a player off LTIR during the playoffs works the same as in season, forced to scratch players if necessary to comply w the cap.

Or if you wann get whacky, if you have a over 5M in injuries you'll be awarded 5M OR One single acquisition equal to the total AAV of injured players. Gives teams the option of depth while restricting them, or allows them to sign a star but keeps it from becoming the NBA

This is the type of thing that happens in a hard cap league, among other "issues" such as certain markets being more attractive than others. There is no issue with LTIR by itself. LTIR exists for the purpose of being able to replace your long term injured pieces. Ken Holland was right, teams shouldn't be penalized for getting their key guys healthy in the most important part of the season - the playoffs. Never forget the fact that teams are gambling when they make moves to go over the cap. They still have to play well enough to qualify for the playoffs without their best players and in some cases advance before injured players are able to return. Even with all of that, teams still need to account for the cap after the season ends and they're still giving up players, picks, or both to make deadline deals. It's not exactly a free transaction, takes more than one team to make a trade or pick up on waivers. RE: VGK, the video failed to mention all of the extra moves VGK had to make in order to gain capital and cap space for the Eichel trade. They traded away a lot of pieces beforehand and Alex Tuch + their best prospect went directly to their trade partner in the same deal. A big chunk of how the roster was constructed changed while trying to make the Eichel trade possible and they missed the playoffs that season too. All of that was done to trade for a 10M+ AAV guy that was seen as a bust, locker room cancer, immature, etc...and wasn't even healthy at the time, heading into non-traditional surgery. That type of move is done by an organization with balls enough to gamble like this. Too many people whining about this team always forgets these parts of the story bc the LTIR narratives are too strong and easy to blame.

One way could be that a new category is made for injured players SEIL (season-ending injury list) and players placed there don't count towards the salary cap but also can't play a competitive game until pre-season game 1. Plus change the rule that a portion (how much exactly can be debated, maybe 50%, or even slighting scale depending on the length of time the player is injured) of a player's salary still counts towards the salary cap when placed into LTIR. But at the end of the day when your team does then it's "great rule lawyering" and when a team you don't like does it then it's "BS that needs to end".

Hybrid cap is probably the best idea I've heard. You can only bench a cap compliant team on the night. So if someone does come off LTIR and you are put above the cap, you can still play them. The downside is you'd have to exclude players from the game to become cap complaint. To further deter loophole abuse, those players you have selected to not play would not be allowed to play for the rest of the playoffs or the series. You'll need to call up an AHL backup for reinforcements. This stops you loading up on players who don't have a two way contract at the deadline, and further risks your depth options if you need to clear waivers to prepare for your abuse.

So, the fix to this issue would either be to limit the amount you can be over the cap in the playoffs to like 5 mil or 10 mil even, or make it so contracts above a certain threshold still count. Like, the rule is intended to prevent them from having an AHL player fill in for like a JT Compher or whatever you’re not intended to get a free replacement superstar. You could also have the NHL do independent medical assessments to make sure no one is gaming the system. The other fix is to allow for the team as a whole to be over the cap but the team they put on the ice must be under the cap, so they could theoretically have those extra players scratched or not dressed but still available to the team if there’s an injury but you can’t ice a team over the cap that way the injury replacement issue is solved but you’re not getting essentially a free superstar above the cap 18 mil ya know. The fix for the taxes is easily, make the teams pay the average state tax that the Canadian and American teams with state taxes pay and make the teams pay that on every deal into either the player assistance fund, referee assistance fund, revenue sharing, or some other charitable or other fund to even the playing field and perhaps do something good with it simultaneously, either that or you could theoretically penalize teams with no state tax with whatever the average percentage is built into the cap to account for the players taking discounts. That or have the the NHLPA, or some other type of competitive balance tax formula to even it out.

Well, you would have to get the owners and players to change the CBA. Owners don't care about a playoff cap because players don't get paid, besides any bonus money they may get. And I don't think the players mind at all, either, as I have not heard any players speaking out about changing LTIR. I think fans just need to accept that these are the rules, and they aren't going to change anytime soon.

Feel like the only way this could be “fixed” would be some sort of modification to it, like players on LTIR going into the playoffs cannot return until the second round (if the team were to get there). Any team can do it and would probably love to if its your own team doing so, but hate it when its someone you’d be going up against

If you get someone back from injury and they are not on the roater you can swap them out at the start of the next round. Youre not ounished for having players off the active roster capwise, they just cant play. That gives teams a reason to acquire at the deadline and use LTIR space but they will need to adjust

The league should allow a team to put someone out at will counting against the cap. Any player who's injury will not count towards the cap should be submitted to the NHL who will have a board of physicians randomly pick one to approve the long term injury as replaceable and a follow up of medical reports to that Dr should be made every 15 days. If it appears they will come back before the playoffs, or near the play offs they are placed back on cap hit. The player also shouldn't be allowed to return if not approved by the Dr, or a board of doctors to ensure they're health is not at risk

my slight workaround would be for players making 6+ million would be to make it so only half of the salary can be taken off the cap, also if they had a hard cap for how much money can be used for ltir like say 10 million. so basically for example stone’s salary only counts for 4.75 Million. I understand why players and owners don’t have a problem with it but you have to at least tweak it a bit.

New rule the NHL should make. shouldn’t allow a player on LTIR to play in the playoffs if they didn’t play the last 10 games of the season or something. Teams wouldn’t be able to use the loophole anymore cuzz they would have to use the player that is on LTIR for the last 10 games or just not use him in the playoffs at all. Would be interesting

I think F1 just made a ruling that all salary capped leagues should follow, you get extra salary cap based on cost of living and taxes where you are located so if you need to pay you engeneers more because of taxes or high costs of living you can stay competitive with teams that don't have this issue

Easiest fix ever, and it's already been brought up (both in the video and in the NHL) - Just put the cap in place during the postseason. It's literally that easy. Hearing the reasoning for this not being in place as "If you're on a run and players get injured you don't want to be stuck with AHL guys" is complete BS. Shit happens in the season to every team, and you need to deal with it as an organization. If you didn't build a team with depth, good luck next year. I'm a Buffalo fan and had to watch all hope of us ever winning a cup go out the window during the 05-06 playoffs when our entire D corps went down with injury during the Finals...just to be stuck with an AHL defense when it mattered most. Shit happens, and that's just how the season went.

Make players coming off of LTIR miss the first round of the playoffs. They won’t block them from competing entirely but limiting it in the first round will bounce at least a few of the teams attempting to circumvent the cap and then players will have to enter into a harshly competitive environment without having played recently so regaining full game ready conditioning won’t likely happen until the third round at a minimum

The integrity of the game has been compromised because of this. The chain reaction cause by Kane's injury is serious. Glad you brought the issue to more eyes. No state tax increases your chances at the Stanley Cup ten fold. That is just plain old not fair. I know there are some other details that go into it, but the broad strokes are that simple. Something needs to be done or else it will really start to get out of hand.
