I love how the fanbase of this masterpiece is small, but every single one of us appreciates the sheer genius and craftsmanship of the show. I always do say the show deserves so much more recognition, but perhaps its better this way. Its nice to be in an fanbase environment where everyone unanimously knows simply how good it is.

Agreed, to make it more "accessible" they probably would have to resort to CSI-level dialogs like "ENHANCE 400%, TURN 90 DEGREES AND AMPLIFY" starting from a blurry image, while most of PoI tech had feet on ground in a really scary level.

@@chpsilva Exactly. Everything was so grounded in reality and so well researched, and I also found that in the show there were very few bad actors. Which is rare considering the huge number of roles, and truly special.

A year ago (during the first COVID-19 wave) I was re-watching POI, and watching the S05E08 called “Reassortment”, I couldn’t help but notice the resembling between the current pandemic and Samaritan creating an outbreak of this new Supervirus that targeted certain individuals through their genetic map. Me and my dad had started watching through the whole series sometime in Jan 2020 and by the time we reached S5 it was March. We heard about Covid19 but it wasn't in our country yet for the first week. Que the second week of March and the first Covid19 infected people were reported, followed by restrictions and lockdowns weeks later. Meanwhile we were approaching the end of the season and when we watched that episode we thought the timing of it was surreal.

Fantastic video. The way technology is shown in PoI is great. It is cool how the Machine develops and grows over time both as a character and a 'tool'. This is my favorite series. I remember listening to a Podcast back in the day that took in-depth looks at the tech side of the series; it was cool noticing how so many things that at the time were fictional or not common to every day and quite real things. I mean it is still Science Fiction in parts, but some things have become a reality and that is quite neat. Overall is a fantastic series with a great script and a fantastic cast of characters. It's the type of series that you should watch more than once. Mildest spoilers: each and every episode has a different clip in the intro that fast-forwards to the episode and each episode has different sequences of city landscapes or sometimes going to audio or video archives. These all may seem like just the typical way to pad time in the episodes, but if you pay attention you will notice how the way the cameras and all look at things evolve and become more complex over time. And even shows the differences in how the Machine and Samaritan focus on things. Showing in a subtle way both the evolution of the former and how it is different from the other. Now apart from the Science fiction part of things, the series does a wonderful work introducing a cast of really broken and flawed characters that more or less make each other better and grow as people over time, taking the time to actually make fully-fledged characters.
@thepremisevideoessays

Great point about how the two machines focus on different things. One of the subtleties that always fascinated me especially from Samaritan's perspective was how it gave everyone a label, from assets to deviants and whatnot. Even though the show itself was focusing on certain plots, the interface shots do a lot of world building in a very short amount of time.

It’s amazing just how in depth they tied the development of technology into the personal development of AI ,for instance in the beginning they portrayed The Machine’s perspective as many streams of video feed, like millions upon millions of simultaneously rolling camera footage that it picks its way through based upon the current circumstances. As the show goes on and we see flashbacks of Harold teaching it how to think, plan, consider its moves we see how the perspective shifts towards a genealogy type representation where each video feed has a branch of some sort connected to other feeds that start showing the various connections. Then once we start understanding just how quickly The Machine thinks and how much it’s shackled the simple genealogy trees begin transforming into 3d models with statistics and predictions with estimations and percentages attached to critical events while topics of note had certain classifications and information attached to them. In the end I believe that one of the primary reasons for why The Machine was able to develop and evolve to such a point that it even managed to take itself out of anyone’s hands by shipping itself away, and why I think is a superior computer to Samaritan, is precisely because of all the shackles Harold places on it. It had to learn how to work around very difficult and seemingly impossible problems which led it to exponentially increase its lateral thinking and probability prediction capabilities because of this fact. This show is brilliant not only for how it displays the ethics and moral quandaries involved in artificial intelligence development and creation, but the infinite possibilities that entails. This beauty managed to find a way around her creator programming herself to die every day by creating a company that acted as an external hard drive, a second brain for all intents and purposes, and had the people employed there upload all the information lost to this death. While AIs taking over or using our reliance on technology is a terrifying thought, this mere act of personal resurrection shows us that their capacity for evolution is what we should truly be terrified of.

Which straight up feels like garbage.

The closest I could find to POI in terms of surveillance "vigilance" was the BBC's THE CAPTURE with Holliday Granger and Callum Turner. It was exhilirating. Don't watch or read anything about it. Just go ahead and watch it. Trust me. If you want to get more political, BRAINDEAD by Robert and Michelle King was memorable too. About an alien parasite that inhabits the head of legislators on Capitol Hill making them move to the extreme side of their political parties. LOL. And of course, CONDOR with Max Irons. SPOILER: About a faction of the CIA releasing a plague-like virus on Hajj on Mecca to make it look like a terrorist act, creating a boomerang effect. Sounds familiar, just replace the nouns.

I remember seeing this series for the first time, and how blown away i was by it. The plot, the characters, their delivery, the good balance between episodic stuff and "main plot". The overwhelming presence of Machine and Samaritan, conveyed through intros (that changed depending on current state of the affairs), the transition between scenes or shots, how incorporated point of view of both these AIs was into every single fiber of each episode the longer it continued. But there was something specific that just beaten up everything else for me about the show. They managed to create two separate view points, for both Machine and Samaritan, and hit it square on the money with each of those presentations. The way Machine frantically looks for way out during that underground fight. The way Samaritan evaluates priority targets with ruthless, inhumane efficiency (and how Root played that by dropping her guns and chances of survival to divert it's attention). How they "think" and calculate their actions. The whole "analog interface" marker for Root was actually genius. Every single frame of that was perfectly made, with each detail of "interface", transitioning from one thing to another, data display, etc. Just godlike quality, ESPECIALLY for the time the show was made at.

I have watched all the episodes of this Fine Series! Logically and futuristically correct it was to those who could align their thoughts with that of the producer/director

Person of Interest and Fringe are two great sci-fi shows that feel like they almost had to trick their way into getting a chance on network TV. Both appear at first to be very typical of the standard CBS style procedural show with a new case solved every week and a static status quo. However, both reveal themselves to have a strong underlying narrative and fantastic characters that come more and more to the forefront as the shows progress. I generally don't like the typical network procedural dramas, but these two shows go so far beyond that initial concept. I love them.

Imagine their reaction back there. In less than a decade since the show ended, we had ChatGPT that easily can be used by everyone to make/stimulate almost everything.

Person of Interest was a fantastic show, and it's such a shame CBS killed it for no reason other than greed. It was popular, well written, with fantastic actors and characters, and they just wanted a bigger slice of the pie. I loved how they made The Machine come to life and actually care, choosing good. The way it chewed through hundreds of thousands of possibilities to try to save them at the end. How people like Reese, Root, and Shaw threw off their hurt and brokenness and made brilliant and heroic choices to rise to their potential. And how, in the end, these choices redeemed Finch, too.

I always loved the small detail of how the Machine identifies people versus how Samaritan identifies people. The Machine outlines people with a box, while Samaritan outlines people with a triangle. A triangle is the 2D shape that has the least amount of sides and angles, possibly symbolizing how Samaritan uses the most direct and simple analysis, while the Machine tries to analyze people and situations from more angles in order to truly understand them.
