How Pierce Brosnan Saved (And Then Killed) The Bond Franchise

The James Bond franchise has had it's share of ups and downs throughout it's 60 year run. Each time a new 007 is brought in the tone of the franchise seems to shift. None bigger though when Pierce Brosnan took up the mantle as James Bond in Goldeneye. Seemingly saving the franchise and breathing life into Bond, it would only take a few more installments for Brosnan to almost destroy the James Bond legacy.

The Bond producers always give themselves too much credit when it's talent that creates the lighting in the bottle. Imo, the problem was definitely not with Brosnan. The man gave it his all, and is one of the main reasons I've watched GoldenEye a countless amount of times. I think the problems with his last three is the writing and the direction (and also being under a new producer). If he was given a different script and direction, I think we could've seen movies on par or even better than GoldenEye, just like with the Craig era. Same thing happened to Dalton, he was the best part with his movies, and it sucks they're hard to watch because they just felt so campy, and I like both campy and gritty Bond films.

One of the best things about the Bond franchise is that no matter how outlandish or ridiculous, the producers will always right the ship for the next Bond movie. One title (and one actor) has never killed this series. And in regards to Die Another Day not being "beloved. At all." it would gross over 431 million worldwide. That's over 700 million adjusted for today's inflation. The biggest box office of the Brosnan era. Love or hated, if it "killed the franchise" the corpse surely had money stuffed in its pockets.

It's weird how people let outside factors affect their view of a movie's success or quality. For years OHMSS and LTK were considered "bad" merely because the actors had short runs, and somehow Dalton was blamed for killing the franchise even though they stopped making movies because of a dispute with McClory.

Especially during the 90's, where it was simply so obsolete. When Roger did it, it was at least a bit more original, and fitting. With the Brosnan movies it felt uninspiring, and cheap. Plus it was also the time of the CGI, that has started to spread in the 90's. Which also led into the situation, that made Tamahori go "all in" with the final Brosnan movie, because Pandora's box already has been opened at this point widely anyway. The suspense aspect was simply gone. In general, the overall quality of the Bond movies started to fade away during the time of the Brosnan movies, unfortunately. Pierce Brosnan was supposed to play James Bond in "The Living Daylights" instead of Timothy Dalton! Brosnan was on the producers radar when he visited the set of "For Your Eyes Only" (where his first wife Cassandra Harris was a Bond girl) and then "Remington Steele" raised Brosnan's profile. In 1986, NBC cancelled "Remington Steele" and Brosnan was one of the top contenders for Bond and got the role. When news of the casting leaked, interest in "Remington Steele" surged causing NBC to renew the series (a few days before announcement of Brosnan as Bond). Because of that, Brosnan was put back under contract for the show and Albert R. Broccoli withdrew the offer (because he didn't want James Bond to be associated to the character of Remington Steele) and cast Timothy Dalton instead.

Pierce was truly under utilized after Goldeneye. His entire Bond career was in turmoil from his inception due to the issues with his Remington Steele contract. His acting never really changed despite writers direction and stories, and certain scenes in each film show he was still Goldeneye Bond, just locked behind Hollywood bureaucracy. It seems almost every actor who played Bond had to deal with some heavy mistreatment and criticism, but to this day Goldeneye is consistently a top 5 bond, and Pierce will always be the iconic version I strived to be as a boy, and emulate today as a man...albeit with more witicism and significantly less hair

I think tomorrow never dies is really great, and watching it in the early 2000's on reruns and seeing the villain as this Rupert Murdoc with a Steve Jobs flair, a tech/media mogul felt like the real 21st century villain, and the martial arts mixture was good as well, The World is not Enough tough, great videogame, superb theme song, mid movie. Now, Die Another Day, it was my first Bond I saw in theaters and as a kid, it blows your mind, I really love it, I think this and The Phantom Menace are my guilty pleasure movies, because they really make me reconnect with my inner child, bombastic set pieces, great production value, and more cheese than those movie theater nachos, I tell you, I just love it, but just like its theme song by Madonna, Die Another Day it's overall a banger, but not the best for James Bond.

@@thegreypath1777 Goldeneye is one of the best bond films ever. Die another day is a abomination. The ones in between range in between in sequential order. Pretty self explanatory

And what’s sad is that the games that featured Pierce’s likeness were spectacular. I never played it, but Everything or Nothing was a great story. I played Nightfire and boy, that would have been an AMAZING movie.

Tomorrow Never Dies is actually my favorite Bond film that I've seen so far. I was hoping the Michelle Yeoh character would get her own spin-off

Great video guys thanks for your honest thoughts on pierce's performance as 007 his movies 🎬 were great in their day sure they were camp 😅and over the top but bond movies are meant to be over the top, and been an Irishman such as myself I have to like pierce 😅😊

Goldeneye was definitely my favorite Bond film of the Brosnan era. Tomorrow never dies, The world is not enough, and Die Another day didn't have that same appeal Goldeneye had, I'm not saying they were bad movies, I thought they were good, but definitely toned down. When Goldeneye was written they obviously had Timothy Dalton in mind for the role which would explain why Pierce Brosnan's Bond had a completely different personality in that movie compared to the films following, had Brosnan portrayed the character the way he did in Goldeneye in the rest of his Bond films they would have been a lot better.

Maybe I have a soft spot for TND, as it's my first Bond movie I saw in theaters and my introduction do Michelle Yeoh, but I loved it. The action and the gadgets are great and I enjoyed Pryce hamming it up as Carver as a villain that's probably gotten more believable as time went on. The henchman Stamper is physically imposing but kind of forgettable and I guess you could say the movie feels like just another Bond romp rather than something more special like Goldeneye, but I think it's still enjoyable.

It definately felt like a big event. It had the best car in the whole series too. And the best car chase scene imo

“Killing” the franchise can’t really be on Brosnan. After all, the producers and director set the story and tone. That said, I preferred Dalton’s grittier 007, especially in License to Kill, and I thought Brosnan was just a return to Moore, just not as campy. So I was happy to see the producers switch back to a gritty Bond with Craig.

It’s incredibly ironic that Nerdstalgic has taken this position given he was glowing about Craig, who not only IS the Bond that died, but reportedly had played an active role in killing him off.

Hearing the plot descriptions, I’m wondering if we watched the same films. Because someone kind of forgot to mention the big twists in the latter two which, especially in The World is Not Enough gave it a boost. Because Renard isn’t the main villain by any means!

Having directly experienced the Remington Steele days as a ritual with my Mom. You totally left out that the last couple of seasons of Remington Steele was basically Piece's attempt at "proving" he was the next 007. Which is exactly why they went a different way. In the beginning I was a a supporter of Pierce as the obvious choice .... in the end ... I preferred Timothy Dalton.
