Game shows have always been so dystopian to me, rich people dangling money over the heads of poor people to get them to humiliate themselves and put on a show so they can make even more money

Wouldn't it be weird if we lived in the richest country in the history of the world and we didn't provide adequate medical care for citizens? Truly a disgusting dystopia.

It's amazing this isn't super obvious to everyone already. We are living in the black mirror already.

This makes an excellent point. To survive we are often compelled to cooperate with and even show obeisance to cruel elitists with no more right to hold our fate in their hands than ourselves. What a reality.

Two years ago, at one of the lowest points in my life, this channel has been a source of hope and peace for me. I'm glad there's still some form of humanity amongst the chaos found in social media.

I generally dont comment, but this video left me speechless. It shows how at personal level, life is precious, but at humanity level that same life is just an ordinary like a bag of stars in sky.

The saddest thing about this story is that it's less fiction and more real then it should be.

Sounds just like the hunger games. Whilst most of the story is fictional, the most dystopian part of it is true. As an Australian who has access to free healthcare, the part that stood out as most dystopian to me is that if you can't afford life saving medical treatment in America, then tough luck, they just let you suffer and die.

A very deep message, but a very sad reality for the people in the world.

I am from Ethiopia and I gotta say that there's something slightly similar (underline slightly) taking place here. So, there are shows that air weekly in afternoons and evenings (similar to late shows) that are mainly entertainment related. They feature news, comedy and songs performed by famous singers...and one additional thing. Near the end, there is always a segment dedicated to a video of someone on social media who's suffering from some medical trauma and can't afford treatment. Subtitled with the video, there's always the bank account number of the person in need. Then the host of the show will comment on how tragic this is and then, very politely, ask the audience to donate money to that bank number. Now, I am in now way saying that this is completely bad or anything like that... I said it's only slightly similar, after all. It's just that the number of videos that make it to the show is low (like 5 or so at any one time) and that's out of a pool of patients nationwide that can't afford treatment. ( The doctor to patient ratio in Ethiopia is like 1 doctor for every 10,000 patients... One of the worst in the world) There are some lotteries with better odds than that... What's more, I don't think they randomly select donation pleas from social media. They only present a select few videos that have already went viral on social media (like FB and YT, platforms that monetize viewership) and you can imagine how a viral video could increase their rating on TV (I'm not saying that's happening, just that it's a strong possibility). So....yeah, that sucks. And I don't think it's a long shot to say that there are a lot more places this could be happening...! Am I on point? or am I overreacting over something trivial? or worse, over something that's selfless and is actually helping a lot of people??? 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂🤷‍♂

in a way this reminds me of the burger king employee that got 250k on go fund me after getting a lil $5 gift bag for never missing work for 27 years. it’s heartwarming but how many other people are posting into the void for assistance?

This is worse than the Running Man game show. A true 21st century horror. The worst thing is I can easily see a sick show like this actually happening...

This video should be a launchpad for showing how generally people use 'empathy' to build up their own self esteem and how it rarely is true empathy.

I love a story in which the protagonist doesn’t win. It’s painfully humbling.

Who else thought this story was going to end with him watching his own episode on TV and then him seeing that he did in fact pick the right cup but the producers did some trickery and somehow moved the ball from cup 8 to cup 3 after the cups had stopped moving?

I was scrolling through comments thinking "so glad this doesn't yet happen in real life" when I saw people mentioning mr Beast... I didn't know who that was and my jaw dropped when I searched him and saw that he has several hundred million views for humiliating people.

The fact that the contestants each had a terrible back-story and health problems reminds of me of the sad stories told by the contestants on American Idol.

The sarcoma hit me harder than I expected. 5 months at the beginning of 2021, my sarcoma specialist thought I had leiomyosarcoma of the ivc. Can't believe it's been two years since becoming physically disabled with chronic undocumented illness.

I think not having universal health care is way more cruel than this show which is just the product of the original problem. I'm from the EU, never had a major health scare, but I'm gladly paying that reasonably small fee to have all the avaliable medical care if I need it some day.

This is why I think these types of game shows are so predatory. They prey on the weak-bodied and rely on them and the tragedies that have befallen them to push their ratings. It’s quite sick. I don’t watch shows like that, partially bc it really hurts me out to see (i almost cried at this fake story) and bc its cruel imo. Our healthcare system sucks donkey dicc. We need a reform in the way health and health insurance is handled.

In the the USA if you get sick you can be fired for missing just one day of work because it was an inconvenience for the company. Health care is insanely expensive and going up. Health insurance is too expensive and covers very little. Before a medical procedure you will submit financial and payment information. No money, no procedure. If you promise to pay and can't, they will come after whatever they can get. It gets worse all the time. It does not have to be this way.

If there were no audience, humiliating and sad situations like this would not have room to occur.

This hits home. Im in nearly same situation, just swap the job to software engineer and its almost identical. However, I’m not trying for a last minute save. I’ve accepted my fate. I’m 47 and I’ve lived a great life. my kids are young adults now, so my job here is done. I do feel bad for the others in the same boat who arent ready to go.

There was a show in the Netherlands that sounds very similar to this experiment. It was controversial to say the least. It was called "The Great Donor Show"

James understood that everyone in that episode deserve the win. So losing and missing the chance to survival is not what breaks his heart the most, but rather realizing the reality that each individual fighting a battle of their own are being pitted against each other.

There is nothing left for us which can not be turned into entertainment and business...and you can see it has started actually, we are sharing every aspect of our life on social media which has viewership

This got recommended to me today and it's so timely especially with Netflix's new Squid Game series. I know the video was alluding to Mr Beast but it also reminded me of what Netflix is doing. It's so sad, honestly I shed a tear watching this. We truly are living in a dystopia.

Something similar actually happened to me, but I live in EU and we have universal medical healthcare. Having weak heart and having a heart failure completely changed my life for the worse, and brought financial problems, divorce, suicidal thoughts and shyt... even without being put through all the shyt this guy in your story had been through. Um… so Danny is Mr Beast? . I have only watched 2:03 mins yet but when the show was described it completely felt like one of Mr Beast’s Challenges.

Just like our world, one persons happiness maybe be another persons tragedy. Our world is multifaced, some are lucky to live in a fairly stable life with families and loved ones while some are living all alone, no family or anyone to rely on. Our world is a very unfair place.

YOU can help ensure this sort of thing never happens.. by vocally, passionately rejecting it when/if they actually try this

So essentially, all of us have and are still already living in a dystopian. Even if a rule or practice is unfair, the people at the top will always find a way to swing a carrot on the stick for the people below even though it’s already long been pre decided that only small portion people will ever reach that carrot, and then have to keep climbing for more under the same unfair rules. You have to play by the rules if you want to win. They play the poor and desperate on a rich people’s game and keep them below them. It’s far easier for the rich to keep doing this than to give the people who choose to fight these rules a chance for change.

Another great video! Not to say these type of cases haven’t happened before but in the future these incidents have the potential to be more prevalent. It’s not so much the shows fault for existing but more so a reflection of the current state of society.

This "dystopian" game shows are not new. They've existed since the invention of the television. You can search for old game shows (filmed in black and white) here on KZfaq, where housewives compete with each other for money, which some plan to use for mundane things and others for medicine or medical equipment for their family members. I remember watching a video with such a premise a few months back, here on YT.

We all have to go someday, sooner or later. Enjoy life every day and you won't be so worried about when it ends. There's nothing you'll rver achieve that won't be taken from you and that won't eventually fade like dust in the wind. So don't worry about achieving anything. Do your best to achieve what you want, but be happy on the way and regardless of the outcome.

I was in an accident not long ago (not my fault) and was rushed to the hospital for emergency medical care. If I was conscious I would have refused to get in the ambulance, it cost me somewhere around 3k for a 40min trip. Wild.

I've lived through this. I didn't realize, because, obviously no one has lived through this, until the check mark "strong emotions" part of the interview, but this has happened to me multiple times. We already live in a world where people in positions of power can, with a single decision that effects them basically not at all, make or break your life. In those moments, when you are making your case, if you can touch them emotionally they will sometimes drop all pretense of logic and indulge in helping you. I have also been in multiple situations like this where you deserve help, should by all reasonable expectations get help, but then you put forward the 'wrong' emotion and you are stonewalled. Humans.

In order to increase profits every quarter, for-profit health care must either charge more or provide less. Usually both. The ruling class always needs updates to their yachts and mansions. "Greed is needier than need."

Theres a lot of truth in this. Look at the show "Alone," for example. Ten contestants are dropped off in the wilderness to see how long they can survive in super harsh conditions. They are confronted by bears, mountain lions, lack of food, and freezing temperatures. Why do they do it? Almost every cast member has a heart warming story. Last season one contestant had an Autistic child and his potential winnings were going to go to funding his child's education. Stunning.

what kind of a world are we complicit in creating? how can we improve our future for ourselves and future generations? what a beautiful yet horrific world we live in.

As a Canadian I am always shocked to hear Americans don’t have universal healthcare. It is a puzzling and absurd anomaly within the developed and advanced western democracies.

This already happened and is happening. In the 1990s there was an American game show called Debt. People would compete in games with the winner getting their debts paid up to $10,000. Some were there due to wedding debts, student loans, credit card, and medical debts. A lot of modern game shows have contestants just say they want to "pay bills." But a lot of people try to get on game shows to pay their medical bills or a loved one. In the 2000's, I was in a similar situation as James. I have a heart birth defect. I had insurance but they specifically didn't cover preexisting conditions which birth defects are. My heart was failing. I was trying to earn enough money from investments to pay for it. Then 2008 happen and lost most everything. Luckily the ACA was passed, and I was finally able to get treatment before it was too late. Good for me but the ACA isn't enough for most people.

Even though the outcome is now arguably better, I think the show may be harder to watch. Do you think this alternative show would have more or less viewers than the original? And what would that imply?

The Queen for a Day game show in the 1950’s had a similar premise! 5 women chosen from a studio audience competed by presenting their hard-luck stories so as to persuade the audience that each was in the most dire straits. The audience selected the "queen" for each day by applause that was recorded on an applausemeter.

Currency is the source of all Dystopia. Everyone should give goods and services freely, and receive them just as freely, but only if they have an official occupation. All completely regardless of what occupation one has on either side of the transaction. Voila, greed is slowly eliminated. Or at the very least there should be a maximum currency cap. Maybe start with the cap to help break the addiction then ease into elimination

Today I learned about Mr Beast show.

Sadly, James just focused on a disappointing part of his life. When he did not win at The Goliath Show, that became the end of his dreams and of his courage to seek out hope somewhere else aside from that game show. He gave his all for The Goliath Show but trickery made him lose track of the right cup. If you gonna apply this story to real life, we must be reminded that if a door closes for us, another door opens. Sadly, James did not see that door. He died of heart disease when his emotions ran high as he was watching The Goliath Show in his apartment.

So the game show is the insurance companies and the contestants are all of us? Incidentally, I just returned to the USA and have a condition that developed suddenly that may cost me my sex life. I have no insurance and even if I did, there's no guarantee they'd allow the procedure I require nor that it will work anyways. What I have learned is that doctors don't really care and nor does anyone else. The system is so accepted now, that there's no empathy just a flat report that, yeah, your sex life may be over... cost is $100,000 (plus) and let us know what you want to do... How do we think we can come in from the plains and stop living in tribes and then that we can develop societies, corner and hoard resources from some members and over-enrich others, and not provide basic and necessary medical coverage to every person in the country (world)? What a wonderful world it would be...
