Today, the 997 GTS is revered as one of the high water marks of the 911's long career - but I take an alternative look at a car which I think has a lot to answer for.

I like how your road reviews are like the early "New Top Gear" episodes of old were, when mainly Clarkson, and to a lesser extent Hammond and May, really just entertained us with their knowledge of the cars and a little bit of wit and charm. Good job, man!

That was when Top Gear was actually a show about cars, before it became all about the dumb staged challenges. Clarksons ego also ruined it, Grand Tour proved that bigtime.

@@davekennedy6315 I also think bashing the latest top gear was inappropriate and not fair. The end of old top had nothing to do with the car show they made great in the first years. I will admit in the beginning the new show had his flow's but the last few seasons the shows where better than the last of the old trio.

@@dirkcuypers6669 yeah, Top Gear desperately needed new blood and they've now got it. Clarksons schtick had been getting increasingly boring. Plus the new team has Chris Harris who really knows his cars and more importantly how to actually drive them (in Clarksons Top Gear you could see that anytime the car was being driven quickly and with skill it wasn't any of the trio actually driving!)

Oh how it pains me to see a Lotus man reviewing soooo many 911s! I'm going to have to go review a few Lotus, just for payback. Also, yes you are correct, the newer PDK units are smoother and faster, of course. Time marches on! But with 80,000 miles on your test car, if the PDK transmission fluid has not been flushed, you will notice a significant difference, so it may not be representative of what that transmission can do. Always enjoy your videos mate!

Sport chrono is not just about the silly clock, what people forget to mention is the dynamic drivetrain mounts. I drove a loaner 718 Boxter without SC for some time then got back in my 718 Cayman with SC and the difference is appreciable even in just sport mode. The tightened up engine mounts give you a far more visceral feeling. Oh and there's also sport+ and launch control for PDK models. Cheers James, lovin your reviews!

Yr right about the sports chrono software unlock. People seem to now buy it because seeing that stopwatch on the dash adds resale value, or the dealer convinced you need launch control and a button on the steering wheel, makes so little difference in the feel of the performance.

It’s testament to the awe inspiring Porsche engineering and sheer brilliance of the 911 platform that it can be offered in SO many highly tailored specs to suit precise preferences; from pure basic, to a fresh air cabriolet, to a manual GT track car, to a continent crushing automatic Turbo super car where often in a review they win the category. Genius. If there is a problem, it is the 911 has become a victim of its own success as its become “visually” ordinary because there’s just so many of the dam things. No longer a car for the show off.

I have a black 997.2 GTS coupe with a manual transmission. To me, the most important difference from the S is the wide body (and wider rear tires), it is visually very different. You finally mentioned it in passing right at the end, but it is really important. It has a much more aggressive looking stance. I bought the car 4 years ago, and it is worth about the same today (in the US). Mileage is pretty low.

Gotta love the 997.2!! While I agree about your comments re PDK being less smooth in the older cars than their modern counterparts, don't you think that could be a good thing? Sure the 992 changes are seamless when you pull on the paddles .... isn't it almost pointless driving the PDK in manual mode? Isn't it too good? A 997 PDK manual gear change in Sport or Sport+ Mode adds to the drama rather than numbs it, IMHO ;) Mods to recommend - DSC PASM controller, allows you to use PASM Sport 99% of the time. X-Pipe rear silencer bypass on PSE sounds great and is relatively cheap to do . Ditch the Bridgestones and go for the Michelin PS4S. Top it off with a visit to Centre Gravity for a proper geo and chassis set up, those guys are wizards (content hint) ;) Keep up the good work!

Dont mix Sportchrono and the Ciock on the dash. My 997.2 4S PDK has sportchrono plus without the clock. It also has the WLS with 408 hps. Ist not only a softwaresolution, You have complete other plenum, modified cylinderheads and an another airbox . To get an WLS Upgrade , you has to pay 27k € . I think, you can still buy it. But most important for me is, the motor sounds much better than the normal 385hps motor, it feels more aggressive and poweful.

Not sure what model that is, maybe the specs are different in Germany, but it was his dream car. At least he got to enjoy it for 2 years. It also has the stopwatch.. No idea how to actually start the thing. It also has the dpk, and the most glorious of options, a sunroof.

A simple ECU upgrade from DMS will take any C2/4S up to the same BHP output of a GTS without dulling the character like the OEM upgrade which delivers power in a different way to sweeter standard S engine.

My first BMW was an 89 325i and I loved it. Wish it were a Coupé but loved that it was mint for 112k miles. Did all the maintenance myself so it was a great learning bed into the brand back in 2004 when I got it. Almost cried when it sold, for more than I payed for it, 2.5 yrs later because it was replaced with an e46 330i ZHP which I could not stop driving. I’d have both back in my garage if I could. Two of the best non M BMWs. I say that to set the base for my comment of praise amd understanding for how awesome 300bhp is in an e30 chassis. You have any interest in the French elipsoids for your Oreo e30? They would look sick and complement that turbo M20.

Yeah not exactly a pretty car is it? I never did like any 911 convertible either, save for the 930 era 911s, but being one of if not the most beautiful automotive shapes ever devised, you gotta try pretty hard to mess up that shape. Oh and allow me to say that I pretty much despise anyone that drives a crotch rocket. It seems to be the only way it's possible to drive one is by going at least 25 mph over the posted limit, regardless of what traffic around you is doing and how many people there are. They also must have a serious problem staying in whatever lane the rest of us seem to have no trouble with, as they love to weave in and out of traffic, getting inches from your bumper and/or fender as they whizz by you. I guess turning lanes for them happen to be just another lane they can drive in, and the same goes for the shoulder of the road. While the rest of us wait in traffic they'll happily shoot up either at as fast a speed as they can manage. Oh and driving right up the middle of traffic must seem like a good idea to them as well. Really thought I hate bikers. You can all go to hell. I drive like a maniac too on occasion, but I wait to do it when the chances of me harming anyone else are minimal to zero, rather than doing it every time I drive. I hear bikers bitch about people not looking out for them, well if you didn't drive (or ride or whatever) like an utter a$$hole maybe you'd get less near misses.

9:32 I'm sorry, but can you back up any of that rambling with any actual facts? It all seems pretty subjective to me.

@@Rascularvideos but that argument could be applied to 1000s of cars,I've never driven a 2WD 911 but I'm confident that Porsche have got it sown up when it comes to driving experience, all i hear is people raving about 911's new or old,I've never heard anyone rave about a modern Audi,I'm sure an RS3 is a hoot, but boy are they dull looking,I'm not really seeing how it would compare to Porsche's finest, but each to their own.

Graham Smith Yeah, I agree it can be applied to lots. My point is that modern cars are too fast and too easy to drive fast. They are too heavy (safety regs I know) by and large as well. You don’t have to drive them, you just point and steer. And I don’t like turbos. Not all of ‘em, obvs, but the RS3 is a prime example. Don’t get me wrong: for many people they are brilliant as they can be equally happy mooching around town as going full chat. My mate recently bought a gen 1 Boxster and although ‘only’ 220 bhp or so (at approx 1350kg) believe me it’s enough. You can ring it out properly. And you have to concentrate, in a good way. It’s far from perfect but that’s part of it. I was lucky enough to come into a bit of money recently and managed to find a good condition Clio 182 Trophy, so I bought it. Like the Boxster, it’s not perfect but at not much over a tonne and with proper Sachs dampers (and an aftermarket Milltech exhaust) it’s fantastic. Again, you have to concentrate. But it comes alive above 5,000 rpm (like the Boxster) and it has, on several occasions, made me laugh out loud. Around town, not quite so much but it’s not awful.
